Andrea
I open my eyes, and I’m in an all-white room.
I’m dressed entirely differently. This doesn’t feel like a hospital…
Am I dead?
“No, not dead, my dear.”
I nearly jump out of my skin as I hear the voice of the Moon Goddess.
She is tall and silver-haired with a simple white dress and a kind smile.
“I gave my daughters many gifts, but you fight like savages. Instead of using your many gifts to your own advantage.” She said with a simple shake of her head.
“…we have more gifts?” I was surprised.
I knew I could summon water and use it as a defense, and I was uncommonly fast, even for a werewolf. Amber can drain her own life to keep others alive. We also can mind links regardless of the distance. Most of my other sisters had uncommon speed and strength, but we hadn’t found anything else of use.
What else are we capable of?
“Oh yes, many more, and all of you will need them in the next few months. I will be sending someone to train you. So please keep each other alive until then.”
She said with a small smile.
I went to ask what she meant by the last statement, but I blinked and was back in my body.
I take my first breath, and I immediately feel pain everywhere. As much as I appreciate being able to fight longer and with endurance, the day is the worst. The machines next to me start beeping at my rising heart rate. Then, slowly, it released medicine into my bloodstream, and the pain became bearable.
To my right are the twins, still resting, and to my left is Amber. Her color is almost gray. She looks like she lost weight in a matter of hours. If her heart monitor hadn’t let me know she was still alive, I would have been worried. She didn’t look good.
Her mate was in a chair beside her, resting his head on her bed.
“…something is coming, isn’t it?”
Said Amber in a whisper. She didn’t bother to open her eyes.
“How did you know?”
“…I can just feel it….she said with a long sigh. “How did you all survive? I saw the corpses being burned. I studied giant hybrids in my alpha training. One giant is enough, but an entire army..?”
“Cole. He took one more than his fair share.”
Amber laughed softly, “well, I misjudged him then.”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked. I can feel my wolf getting defensive.
“He’s hard to read...he seems very cold and distant...but someone cold wouldn’t risk their own skin for a pack of wolves they barely know.”
“...well, not everyone is meant to be mated to a ray of sunshine.” I joked back to her to break the tension. Her mate is always kind and open to everyone that he meets.
“This is true...can you imagine if he was, you two would walk into a room and blind us all,” said Amber.
“I spoke with the Moon Goddess.”
“Again? You seem to be her favorite, not me,” said Amber, teasing me.
“She’s sending someone to train us... there’s more to our gifts than we realize.”
All of the teasings left her face….” Whatever is coming… it will be a challenge if she sends help.”
“...she also called us savages. So I guess we have gifts that make everything we have been doing easier.”
“Well… we are wolves..but I’ll take easier. I feel like sh**.”
“You look like sh**, to be honest.”
“What a lovely, encouraging sister you are. Please remind me why I kept your *ss alive.”
“...you know you love me..”
.
“I guess so….can I ask you something?.... and you have to be honest.”
“..okay?”
“Are you happy with Cole... I don’t relish the idea of breaking a deal with a god….but you two seem so different. I’m worried….”
“Well, it’s been nothing but chaos since we got engaged. It’s hard to know...my wolf likes him, and we have had a few sweet moments, but I don’t know. I can’t say either way. It’s not like we’ve been able to get to know each other much. We’ve talked some about our childhood, but with everything going on… it’s not like we have had the chance to give this a fair chance.”
“This is true…
“...You need to cut him some slack, my love.” Said Eric as he lifted his head up….. “He isn’t a werewolf. He probably needs to adjust to our culture. We’re loud and a lot. He grew up without siblings, with Hades as a father and a mother who would leave him for months at a time. He doesn’t have any sense of family. He also was thrown into an arranged married without his consent.. that is a lot for anyone”
“Eavesdropping is rude….” Amber replies, and Eric simply smiles at her.
“When did you become Cole’s best friend?” I ask, generally curious.
Eric Shrugs. “Before our wedding, some and a few conversations here and there. He is a quiet and brooding type, but I eventually have worn him down.”
“Of course you did. I’m sure you could get trees to become your friends if you tried your hardest.” I shot back to him
“..Hey, with the help of his witch friend, that might be a possibility,” Eric replied, and I rolled my eyes.
“...what am I missing?” asks Amber.
“Just that Cole’s friend made the whole forest come to our aid.”
Amber looked stunned for a second….” really?”
Then Eric launched into the story about our battle and everything that happened.
I return to the conversation as they talk about the number of wolves lost in the fight. Just over fifty. I honestly thought that it would be worse, but at the same time, I feel for Alice and her mate. Losing any part of your pack is difficult.
I looked around the room. The twins are both still sleeping. Cole is not here, and that stings. Where is he exactly? I had hoped that he would be here when I woke up. Is he with her? I can feel my wolf getting anxious, but I know better than to get up.
