As we stepped out of the alley onto the main pedestrian dirt road, the eerie silence of the impoverished outskirts settled around us. The people here didn't walk past us; they stared. They observed. They categorised us as predators or prey. Emaciated shifters with dull, hollow eyes leaned against rusted iron railings, their gazes tracking us like vultures watching a pair of limping stray dogs. Dirty children huddled in doorways, and men with visible, unhealed battle scars tracked Frayer’s broad shoulders with cold, calculating suspicion. The last time I was here, it was already dark.
