After settling the affairs in the south-western parts of Katen, to the city of Goundo, Akane and Akha travel far south to the Yura Region where there awaits them a curse that has afflicted the lands. It was not for long that Akha and Akane encounter the dark creatures of the regions, eventually battling against hundreds of ice-breathing spirits and a yasu the size of a mountain.
During these trials, Akha acquires an ancient plight that has burdened those under its ordeal— the Kiori Shrine Watchers; an elite and isolated group of unofficial blademasters taught and taken under by Uehara Kuro, a daughter of one of the swordsman who practiced one of the most efficient and versatile sword-wielding techniques in Issu; the Haikigiri.
As Uehara Kuro explains to Akane the curse of Sukuno, an ancient warlord whose spirit haunts Yura, they have to decide their next course of action. Uehara explains to Akane that Sukuno restlessly searches for a vessel for whom he can channel his malice and enact his terror once again, and whoever is unfortunate enough to acquire such misfortune, must not be left alive under no circumstances. As the shrine watchers vigilantly guard Akha's unconscious body that lay outside the temple floors chained to a rock, it would not be for long that the plans of Sukuno stir within Akha's own mind to wreak havoc and destroy those who oppose him.
As danger lurks unnoticed and the visions that Akane once feared are now slowly accepted to aid her of freeing Akha from this curse, the trials bequeathed to them are far from over. Will Akane's prophesied vision of Akha's death be fulfilled? Will this spell the end of the ancient order of the Kiori? Find out what happens next in the 21st chapter of the Shadow of Issu, Possessed by Disease.
