Maverick
A day or two of not seeing Mackenzie was doable, but a week was way too much for a guy such as myself. I was completely hooked and undeniably addicted to her and being inside her. Not that I haven’t been addicted to her for years, but the way I’ve been craving her has now grown a hundredfold. If it wasn’t for my obligations and hers as well, I’d probably lock ourselves where no one could bother us and I’d most likely never pull out of her if and when that happened. “f*****g hell, Mav. I’ve been talking to you for the last five minutes and you’re just zoning out like that?” Jaxon sniggered as he threw a crumpled paper on my chest. He totally killed the vibe I was in just now, but something would be amiss if he didn’t chime in every once in a while. The guy could outtalk even the most talkative human being recorded on the planet if he was excited about something.
Jaxon will be Jaxon - funny as hell, chatty, but well-loved. The motherfucker, no matter how annoying he can get, evens out our four-way dynamic. And what was this dynamic I was talking about you say? Well, we all had our distinct characteristics. I was more of the polite boy-next-door type. Maddox was born to be a superstar, so he had that flirtatious aura going on for him. He could basically have both men and women falling in love with him. Sky was the reserved one who had the “don’t f**k with me” glare. While Jaxon was the life of the party and had an easy-going feel to him. Basically, we had different personalities but we all jived.
“Sorry, I guess you lost me the minute you opened your mouth. I guess I’ve lost interest in listening to all the nonsense you spit once in a while,” I teased back. “Oh, well now that hurts, Knight,” he gasped, placing his hands over his chest as if I shot him straight to the heart. “Besides, I wasn’t spitting nonsense,” he added as he rummaged through his stuff looking for the “perfect” drumsticks among the many, whatever that meant. Of course, his remark made Sky snort, which actually meant that he was indeed spitting nonsense just now.
We were getting ready to perform at the Hotel Cafe with our closest friends and co-musicians as our “let the tour begin” tradition for the upcoming tour in a week. This wasn’t a full-on concert, but more of a warm-up and a sort of dry run since we were going to be playing most of our new songs. I would’ve loved it if Mackenzie was here or if I was actually watching her first debut as the lead dancer, but like we'd discussed on our drive back to LA that there would be times when we wouldn’t be able to support each other physically, but we’d still be rooting for each other from afar.
It would suck most of the time, but we kind of expected that already. As proof, I checked the time on my watch and stood to head out of the hallway so that I could call my girl and wish her luck. I waved to a few people and said hello to some as I headed toward the quietest part of the venue before dialing her number. It took five rings for her to answer, but the smile that instantly graced my face when I heard her say hello was so obvious that anyone could tell I was talking to someone special.
Me: Hey, Kenzie, How are things going there?
Mackenzie: I think everything’s going great, but I’m not entirely sure. I think it is though, so yeah, everything’s great. How uh, how are you?
She was completely blabbering and I found that f*****g adorable. She was obviously nervous and I just wished I was there to give her a bit of encouragement before she steps out on stage.
Me: I’m good. We’re about to go on stage in fifteen, so I figured to call you and wish you luck.
I heard her sigh and take three deep breaths before she started talking again.
Mackenzie: Thank you, I needed that.
Me: You’re welcome. You’ll do great. I know you will.
Mackenzie: You think so?
Me: I don’t think so, I know so.
Mackenzie: I mean what if I throw up in the middle of the routine? Or what if I suddenly had a wardrobe malfunction or-
Me: -No backing down, Kenzie. You’ve got this because you’re a marvelous dancer and absolutely beguiling. There’s nothing you can’t do when you’re up on stage.
My words must’ve surprised her because she went dead silent and so I had to check if I accidentally dropped the call.
Me: Hello?
Mackenzie: I’m here. I just... umm... That was really sweet. I guess no one has ever said those things to me before.
Me: No one?
Mackenzie: No one.
Me: I thought I did before.
My statement actually made her laugh as if she was silently telling me that I didn’t.
Me: Well, I’ll make sure to say it often then.
Mackenzie: I wouldn't complain if you did. I have to go now, we're about to go on stage.
Me: Yeah, me too.
Mackenzie: Okay, well, good luck to you too!
Me: Thanks.
The line went silent once more because no one wanted to actually let the other go and so I ended up chuckling as I lifted my finger up to one of the roadies who was telling me that we were up in five.
Mackenzie: What?
Me: Nothing. I guess I was just waiting for you to hang up.
Mackenzie: I don't like hanging up first but I really have to go.
She laughed as she said that and it was f*****g music to my ears.
Me: It wouldn't be very gentleman-like if I ended the call first though.
Mackenzie: Urg! Just hang up already, please?
I laughed once more.
Me: Fine. Oh, and Kenzie?
Mackenzie: Yeah?
Me: I love you.
I didn't wait for her to say anything, I just simply dropped the call. I didn't want to pressure her into saying it back when we'd just gotten back together. I guess I just truly wanted to let her know that I did love her. I always have and always will.
