The sun bathed the field in a warm golden glow as students gathered for the much-anticipated final day of the mini sports event. The sky, painted with hues of orange and pink, added a magical touch to the atmosphere. Excitement buzzed in the air; this was the day everyone had been waiting for-the day of the awards ceremony, where winners would be celebrated, and the overall champion department would be announced. Despite the exhaustion etched on their faces from days of intense competition, the joy and anticipation were unmistakable.
Students formed neat lines in the center of the field, their chatter gradually quieting as the closing ceremony began. The announcer's voice, clear and resonant, echoed across the field, signaling the start of the event.
"Welcome, everyone, to the final day of our mini sports event!" the announcer began, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. "We are here to celebrate the hard work and dedication of all our participants. Let's start with the basketball champion..."
The crowd held its breath in anticipation.
"Team Political Science Department, basketball champion!" the announcer declared.
Cheers erupted from the crowd as Kentaro walked up to the stage, his heart pounding with pride. His friends and teammates clapped and cheered, their faces alight with joy. The applause of his peers was like music to his ears, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
"Way to go, Kentaro!" Kazuki shouted from the crowd, his voice full of admiration.
"Yeah, you did it!" Yuto added, his grin wide and infectious.
Kentaro smiled, waving to the crowd as he accepted the award. "This is for all of us. We did it together," he said, his voice full of emotion.
"Volleyball champion, Political Science Team," the announcer continued. This time, one of Kibin's classmates ascended the stage to receive the honor, their face glowing with happiness.
Kibin felt a surge of pride as he watched his friend. "Nice job, guys," he murmured, clapping along with the rest.
"And the Race Relay champion, Team Political Science," the announcer said with a cheerful tone. Kazuki strode up to the stage amidst the clapping and cheering, his steps confident and sure.
"This one's for all the early morning practices!" Kazuki joked, receiving laughter and applause from his peers.
The announcer proceeded to list the winners of various other events, each announcement met with applause and celebration. The atmosphere was electric, every student feeling the collective pride and joy of their achievements.
Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. "Now, I will announce the overall champion of this mini sports event. Okay, everyone, the overall champion is... the Political Science Department!" the announcer shouted.
Professor Smith climbed the stage to accept the highest honor of the sports event. The students went wild with excitement, their cheers and applause echoing through the field. Kibin's team, in particular, was ecstatic, their hard work and dedication paying off in the most gratifying way.
"We did it!" Kibin shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the crowd.
"Yeah, we did!" Kentaro echoed, his face beaming with pride.
As the ceremony concluded, the students milled about, sharing hugs and high-fives. The sense of accomplishment and unity was palpable. Despite the physical exhaustion, their spirits were high, buoyed by the knowledge that they had not only excelled in their individual events but had also come together as a team to achieve something remarkable.
After the ceremony, the four friends decided to grab lunch at the canteen. The air was filled with the mixed aromas of fried food and excitement, as students celebrated the end of the sports event. Kentaro's phone rang. It was Aiko calling.
"Hello, Kentaro. Where are you right now?" Aiko's cheerful voice came through the line.
"I'm at the field with my friends," Kentaro replied, glancing around at the familiar faces of Yuto, Kazuki, and Kibin, who were still buzzing with the day's excitement.
"Great! I'll head over there. Wait for me," Aiko said before hanging up. Kentaro slipped his phone back into his bag.
"Was that Aiko?" Kazuki asked, a teasing note in his voice. Hearing this, Kibin turned his attention to Kentaro, curiosity piqued.
"Yeah, it was Aiko. She's coming over and wants us to wait for her," Kentaro explained, trying to sound casual despite the subtle excitement in his tone.
"Let's invite her to join us for lunch," Yuto suggested, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
The idea of Aiko joining them made Kibin feel an unexpected pang of sadness. He didn't like this feeling, but he couldn't help it. He struggled to hide his emotions as he nodded in agreement.
Aiko arrived at the field soon after, her bright smile lighting up the space around her. "Thanks for waiting, guys," she said cheerfully. "Shall we head to the canteen?"
"Let's go, Kibin!" Kentaro called out cheerfully, looking back at his friend.
"You guys go ahead. I'll catch up later. I have some stuff to finish up here. Save me a seat," Kibin said, forcing a smile. Kentaro knew Kibin well enough to recognize when he wanted to be alone, so he didn't push further. The group headed to the canteen, leaving Kibin behind.
As luck would have it, Kibin spotted Jennie nearby. "Jennie! Where are you headed? Do you have any plans?" he called out.
"Nope, not really. Why?" Jennie replied, walking over with an inquisitive look.
"How about we grab lunch at the canteen together?" Kibin suggested, trying to sound enthusiastic.
Jennie agreed, and they made their way to the canteen, chatting lightly about the day's events.
Meanwhile, at the canteen, Kazuki, Yuto, Kentaro, and Aiko had already started eating. "Should we wait for Kibin?" Kentaro asked, glancing towards the entrance, a hint of concern in his voice.
"Nah, he said he had things to do," Yuto replied with a dismissive wave. "Let's just start."
Kentaro hesitated. "I'll give him a call, just to check."
Kazuki shook his head. "He'll be here. He told us to go ahead. Let's just enjoy our meal."
When Kibin and Jennie arrived at the canteen, they bought their food and headed to their usual spot at the far end, near the glass wall. However, when they got there, they noticed it had been replaced with smaller tables.
"Oh, Kibin, Jennie, you're here!" Yuto greeted them warmly, raising his hand in a friendly wave.
Kentaro looked up and saw Jennie with Kibin. "There's no more seating here," Kazuki said regretfully, glancing at the new seating arrangement. "They changed the tables to seat only four."
"It's alright. We'll find another spot," Kibin reassured them, trying to keep the disappointment out of his voice.
"There's an empty table over there," Jennie pointed out, leading the way to a corner with a clear view of the whole canteen. They settled at the new table, away from the main group.
As Kentaro ate, he couldn't help but notice how happy Kibin and Jennie seemed. They were laughing and chatting animatedly, their faces lit up with genuine joy.
"Do you believe that vampires are handsome and muscular?" Kibin joked, his voice carrying a playful lilt.
"No way! According to the book I read, they're hideous and terrifying, with red, piercing eyes and long fangs," Jennie explained with a laugh.
"That's not true. They've just made them look scary in stories. Vampires are actually quite handsome," Kibin teased, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Let me show you."
Kibin took two French fries and placed them at the corners of his mouth to mimic fangs. He made a scary face, then quickly switched to a cute one. Jennie burst into laughter, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Kentaro watched them intently, a mixture of emotions swirling inside him. He felt a strange blend of happiness for his friend and an unsettling feeling of being left out. Kazuki noticed his friend's distant look.
"They look happy, don't they?" Kazuki said, resting his head on Kentaro's shoulder, trying to catch his eye.
Kentaro didn't respond, his eyes fixed on Kibin and Jennie, a slight frown creasing his forehead.
"Look how happy Jennie is with Kibin. I'm sure she's going to fall for him," Yuto remarked, nudging Kentaro with his elbow.
"Yeah, they've been spending a lot of time together lately. Kentaro, you better step up or Kibin's going to beat you to getting a girlfriend," Kazuki teased, grinning mischievously.
Still, Kentaro remained silent, his thoughts consumed by the sight of Kibin and Jennie.
As Kibin and Jennie chatted, Kibin glanced over and noticed Kentaro watching him. He couldn't quite read the expression in Kentaro's eyes, but he felt a twinge of sadness. It seemed like Kentaro wanted to say something, but Kibin couldn't figure out what. There was an unspoken tension between them, leaving Kibin feeling uneasy.
In that moment, both friends were aware of the subtle shift in their relationship, but neither knew how to bridge the gap that had quietly formed between them. The laughter and camaraderie of the past few days felt distant, overshadowed by an unspoken understanding that things were changing.
