Inside Classroom 1, the atmosphere was electric with excitement as the history teacher prepared to make an announcement. "We are going on a school trip from November 2 to 4," the teacher declared, a smile on her face as she observed the students' eager reactions. "This trip is tied to our history studies because we will be attending a festival that celebrates the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It's a two-day trip." The room erupted into cheers and whispers, with students exchanging thrilled glances. Kentaro and his classmates couldn't contain their excitement. The idea of diving into the rich cultural history of the Ryukyu Kingdom was exhilarating. As the class president, Kibin took on the responsibility of organizing the activities for the trip. Standing confidently at the front of the room, he held a list of planned events. "During the festival, we will watch the Lion Dance, participate in the Candlelight Ceremony, and take guided tours around Shurijo Castle Park to learn about its history," Kibin explained, his enthusiasm contagious. The students leaned forward, their imaginations already painting vivid pictures of the vibrant festival. Kibin continued, "Our teacher also mentioned that we will be joined by students from other departments who are also studying history. Each group will have their own schedule to avoid any confusion." The anticipation in the room was palpable as the students chattered excitedly about the upcoming trip. The idea of exploring Shurijo Castle Park and witnessing traditional performances filled them with a sense of wonder and curiosity. As the day of the trip approached, the excitement in Classroom 1 reached a fever pitch. The students could hardly contain their enthusiasm, eager to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom and share these moments with their friends and classmates. For Kibin and Kentaro, this trip was more than just a school excursion; it was an opportunity to deepen their understanding of history and create lasting memories together. The morning of the trip arrived, and the students gathered at the school entrance, their backpacks filled with essentials for the journey. The air was filled with chatter and laughter, their spirits high with anticipation. As the bus rumbled toward Shurijo Castle Park, the students exchanged excited whispers and snapped pictures of the passing scenery. Upon arriving at the park, the majestic sight of Shurijo Castle took their breath away. Its red-tiled roofs and ornate architecture stood as a testament to the grandeur of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Kibin, ever the diligent class president, took charge of leading his classmates through the planned activities. "Let's start with the Lion Dance performance. It's scheduled to begin in a few minutes," he announced, guiding them towards the stage area. The students followed eagerly, their curiosity piqued. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, casting a warm glow over the ancient castle, crowds began to gather around the performance area. Families, tourists, and locals alike found their spots, eager to witness the traditional spectacle. Children sat on their parents' shoulders, craning their necks to get a better view, while vendors moved through the crowd, offering snacks and drinks. The sound of rhythmic drumming signaled the beginning of the performance. The drummers, dressed in traditional attire, pounded their instruments with a practiced precision that resonated through the air, setting the stage for the Lion Dance. As the music intensified, two performers emerged, each holding one end of an intricately designed lion costume. The lion's head, adorned with vibrant colors and expressive features, captured the audience's attention immediately. The performers moved in perfect synchronization, bringing the lion to life with each step and sway. The lion's eyes blinked and its mouth opened and closed, creating a sense of realism that enthralled the audience. The dancers' movements were fluid and graceful, a testament to their skill and years of practice. As the dance progressed, the lion interacted with the crowd, playfully mimicking the children and bowing to the elders. The audience responded with laughter and applause, enchanted by the lion's animated antics. The lion's dance told a story of strength, protection, and good fortune, a narrative passed down through generations. Kibin turned to Kentaro, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "This is amazing, isn't it?" he exclaimed. Kentaro nodded, his face lit up with joy. "It's incredible. I've never seen anything like it," he replied, his voice filled with awe. The day continued with more cultural activities, each one deepening the students' appreciation for the Ryukyu Kingdom's heritage. As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the castle, the students knew they had experienced something truly special. At 5:30 PM, Kibin and his classmates gathered in a corner of the bustling festival grounds. "The next event we'll watch is the Candlelight Ceremony at 7:00 PM," Kibin announced with a smile. "Let's grab some dinner first." The air was filled with a sense of anticipation and reverence as festival-goers began to gather for the Candlelight Ceremony. The bustling energy of the day gave way to serene tranquility as the castle grounds were gradually illuminated by the soft flicker of thousands of candles. Families, friends, and couples strolled along the pathways, their faces bathed in the gentle glow of candlelight. The atmosphere was magical, almost otherworldly, as the candles cast long, dancing shadows on the castle walls. The scent of incense mingled with the cool evening breeze, adding to the mystical ambiance. Kibin and Kentaro walked side by side, their footsteps quiet on the cobblestone paths. As they approached the heart of the ceremony, they could see the grand courtyard transformed into a sea of shimmering lights. The castle, standing majestically in the background, seemed to come alive with a quiet, dignified beauty. "Wow, it's even more beautiful than I imagined," Kentaro whispered, his voice filled with awe. Kibin nodded, his eyes reflecting the thousands of tiny flames that surrounded them. The sound of traditional Okinawan music filled the air, its soothing melodies enhancing the reflective mood of the evening. As the ceremony progressed, participants lit candles from a central flame, passing the light from one person to another, symbolizing the sharing of peace and hope. The sight of the flickering candlelight spreading throughout the crowd was mesmerizing, evoking a deep sense of unity and shared history. Just before Kibin and Kentaro could light their candles, Aiko squeezed between them from behind. Kibin shifted away slightly, moving toward a less crowded spot. The ceremony continued, and soon the candles of those attending were lit, casting a warm, unifying glow over the gathering. As the ceremony concluded earlier than expected, Kibin and Kentaro decided to buy some skewers from a food stall. Kazuki and Yuto, along with their girlfriends who also joined the school trip, approached them. As they discussed where to head next, Aiko joined in the conversation. "Perfect timing! Yuto and I are with our girlfriends, and now Aiko is here with Kentaro. Let's make it a double date, guys! We'll have a great time," Kazuki suggested enthusiastically. "I saw a coffee shop at the end of the street. Let's go there," Kazuki's girlfriend added. "Guys, Kibin and I have plans," Kentaro said, trying to avoid the situation. "You can't leave Aiko behind, Kentaro. Come on, she'll join us. Kibin won't mind," Kazuki insisted. "Is it okay, Kibin? Let's go with them!" Kentaro turned to Kibin. "It's fine with me. It's not that important, anyway. Go ahead with them, Kentaro. Don't worry about me," Kibin replied, his voice slightly shaky though he tried to hide his disappointment. "Are you sure, Kibin? You'll be alone," Kentaro asked, concern in his voice. "Don't worry about me, just go," Kibin reassured him. He walked away from the group, glancing back at Kentaro one last time. Kentaro saw the sadness in Kibin's eyes, a pang of guilt hitting him. As Kibin walked away, he couldn't help but feel a deep sense of loneliness. He had been left behind, their plans disrupted. Meanwhile, inside the coffee shop, Kazuki and the others chatted happily, ordering coffee and cake. Despite his sadness, Kibin decided to cheer himself up. He headed to a food stall to buy some skewers, telling himself he could be happy alone. As he ate, a voice called out to him-Andrea. Surprised and delighted, Kibin saw her approach. They caught up while enjoying their skewers. Andrea explained that she worked as a tourist guide at Shurijo Castle and had the day off tomorrow. She offered to be Kibin's personal tour guide the next day, an offer he gladly accepted. Andrea also mentioned that many Filipinos worked there and invited Kibin to her apartment. Eager for the company, Kibin agreed and turned off his phone to fully enjoy his time. He even planned to stay the night at Andrea's apartment. The next morning, Kentaro woke up and looked at the bed next to him-spotless, as if no one had slept there. Sharing a hotel room with Yuto, Kazuki, and Kibin, he was surprised not to find Kibin. He woke up Yuto and Kazuki to ask if they'd seen Kibin, but they hadn't noticed him. Kentaro hurried downstairs to the reception desk to check if Kibin had returned to the hotel. After reviewing the guest list, he found no record of Kibin entering the hotel the previous night. Kentaro tried calling Kibin, but his phone was off. He sent a message, but there was no reply. Worry gnawed at him-what if something had happened to Kibin, alone and without company last night? Meanwhile, Kibin awoke from a deep sleep, feeling refreshed. Andrea called out to him from the kitchen. "Breakfast is ready! Come on, sleepyhead," she teased. He checked his phone for the time-8:00 AM. The guided tour started at 9:00 AM, but with Andrea as his personal tour guide, he wasn't worried about the schedule. Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Kentaro. Kibin answered, sensing the urgency in Kentaro's voice. "Hey, Kentaro. What's up?" Kibin greeted casually, masking the surprise he felt. "I was worried about you. Are you okay? Where are you?" Kentaro's voice was filled with concern, a stark contrast to Kibin's nonchalant tone. "I'm fine. I stayed over at a friend's place," Kibin replied, trying to sound casual. "Can you meet me in front of our hotel?" Kentaro requested, his voice a mix of worry and frustration. "Why? Is something wrong?" Kibin asked, puzzled by the urgency. "Just come, I'll be waiting," Kentaro insisted before hanging up abruptly. Kentaro stood in front of the hotel, pacing anxiously. Moments later, Aiko approached him, her face lit up with a cheerful smile. "Have you been waiting long? Sorry, I just saw your messages," Aiko said apologetically, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Kentaro was taken aback. He had been waiting for Kibin, not Aiko. "Kibin messaged me saying you invited me for breakfast. I think you mixed up your message. Kibin told me he received a message from you that was supposed to be mine. So, how about we go for breakfast together? My treat," Aiko offered warmly. Kentaro hesitated, his mind still on Kibin. "Alright, let's go," he finally agreed, trying to shake off his concern. As the guided tour began, the group, including Kentaro and Aiko, started exploring the right wing of the castle. Meanwhile, Kibin and Andrea, his personal tour guide for the day, started their tour on the left wing. The two groups crossed paths, and Kazuki noticed Kibin with a woman. "Isn't that the girl Kibin watched a movie with?" Aiko remarked, recognizing Andrea. Yuto called out to Kibin, "Hey, are you joining us?" Kibin shook his head. "I've got a personal tour guide. We're going in a different direction," he explained. Kibin and Kentaro exchanged glances, but this time, Kibin's face was expressionless, showing no reaction. Without another word, Kibin and Andrea continued their tour around the castle. Kentaro felt a pang of guilt as he watched Kibin walk away. The knot in his stomach tightened as he realized the distance growing between them, not just physically but emotionally as well. As he continued with the tour, the vibrant history of the Ryukyu Kingdom seemed to blur, overshadowed by the unresolved tension between him and Kibin. After the guided tour, Kibin's team gathered outside Shurijo Castle to prepare for their return. The majestic castle stood tall against the afternoon sky, its red-tiled roofs glowing in the fading sunlight. The students chatted excitedly about their experiences, but Kibin and Kentaro were unusually quiet. As they boarded the university school bus, the seats filled quickly. Kibin took his usual spot by the window, and Kentaro slid in beside him. However, this time, there was a heavy silence between them. Kibin stared out the window, watching the houses and streets of Okinawa pass by as the bus moved. His face was a mask of calm, but his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Similarly, Kentaro gazed out in the opposite direction, his own thoughts consuming him. He couldn't understand why there was always this tension between them, an invisible barrier that seemed to grow with each passing day. The silence felt deafening, a painful reminder of the distance that had grown between them. The bus ride that usually took minutes now seemed to drag on for hours. The beautiful scenes of Okinawa, with its lush landscapes and traditional houses, went unnoticed. Both friends were lost in their turmoil, unable to break the quiet that seemed to suffocate their emotions. Kentaro wanted to speak, to bridge the gap, but he couldn't find the words. Kibin's mind raced with his own thoughts. He replayed the events of the day, wondering if he could have done something differently. The unspoken words and unresolved feelings weighed heavily on him, but he didn't know how to start the conversation that needed to happen. When they finally arrived at the bus stop in front of Okinawa University, the silence still hung between them, heavy and unyielding. They gathered their belongings and stepped off the bus, each moving mechanically as if on autopilot. The other students chatted and laughed, but for Kibin and Kentaro, the world seemed muted. "Hey, Kibin..." Kentaro finally broke the silence, his voice barely above a whisper. He stopped short, the words he wanted to say caught in his throat. Kibin turned to him, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and fear. "Yeah, Kentaro?" "I... never mind," Kentaro said, shaking his head. The moment passed, and the opportunity slipped away. They both knew they needed to talk, to clear the air, but neither could find the courage. The unresolved tension left a bitter taste in their mouths, their hearts heavy with the weight of unspoken emotions. Both felt a deep, aching hurt from the situation-a pain that stemmed from misunderstandings and unexpressed feelings. As they moved further apart, each wondered if their friendship would ever return to what it once was. They went about their evening routines, but the silence and tension from the bus ride lingered. That night, as they lay in their respective beds, both Kibin and Kentaro thought about what had happened and what could have been said. To shake off the sadness he felt, Kibin made himself a cup of coffee. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, offering a momentary comfort. As he sipped the hot beverage, he heard a knock on the door. Opening it, he was surprised to see Kentaro standing there, his expression serious and intent. Without a word, Kentaro stepped into Kibin's room. "Kibin, we need to talk," Kentaro said, his voice tinged with urgency. "About what, Kentaro?" Kibin asked, trying to keep his voice steady despite the mix of emotions swirling inside him. "There's a lot we need to discuss-us, our friendship, and what happened earlier today," Kentaro replied, his eyes searching Kibin's for a hint of understanding. Kibin sighed, looking away. "There's nothing to talk about, Kentaro. You don't need to explain; I understand." "No, you don't understand, Kibin. Whenever I'm with Aiko, you leave. Are you avoiding Aiko? Do you not like her being around me? Tell me, Kibin," Kentaro demanded, frustration evident in his voice. "I'm not avoiding you or Aiko, Kentaro. I'm just trying to respect your privacy," Kibin explained, his voice calm but strained. "What privacy? It feels different to me, Kibin. What are we? Why are you hurting me like this? It's like you don't want me to be with Aiko," Kentaro's voice broke, revealing the depth of his emotions. Kibin's eyes flashed with pain. "I'm not saying that, Kentaro. I'm not avoiding you. The truth is, you're the one leaving me out. When you're with Aiko, you always leave me behind. Even though we're just friends, it hurts because you make me feel like she's more important. What am I to you, Kentaro? Am I your best friend or not? Do you think it didn't hurt to be left alone at Shurijo Castle last night? Now let me ask you, what am I to you, Kentaro?" Kibin's voice trembled with emotion, his vulnerability laid bare. Kentaro's face fell, and he struggled to find the right words. "I'm going to sleep, Kentaro. Close the door on your way out," Kibin said, turning away to hide the tears that were now threatening to spill. He lay down, his back to Kentaro, trying to keep his emotions in check. A few moments later, Kibin heard the soft click of the door closing, signaling Kentaro's departure. The silence that followed was heavy with unspoken words and unresolved feelings, leaving both friends to ponder the future of their fractured relationship. Each of them lay in their beds that night, wrestling with their thoughts and emotions, hoping that someday they would find a way to mend the rift between them.
