The confrontation had created a barrier between Kibin and Kentaro, making things awkward and tense. They no longer spent much time together or talked like they used to. A wall had formed between them, and they only hung out when Kazuki and Yuto insisted they bond. All through November, their relationship remained strained. As December dawned over Okinawa, the island welcomed the new day with soft, golden sunlight. The air was crisp yet gentle, carrying the scent of the sea mixed with the fragrance of blooming hibiscus flowers. It was a scene of serene beauty, where the island's unique charm shone in its own way. The atmosphere in Okinawa was relaxed and cheerful. The sun set in a vibrant display of orange and pink hues, casting a warm glow over the island. The streets came alive with twinkling lights, adding a festive sparkle to the tropical paradise. Locals gathered in public squares and parks for seasonal events, sharing laughter and stories under the canopy of stars. It was a time of community and celebration, where the joy of the season was felt by all. Walking through the streets of Okinawa in December evoked a sense of calm and contentment. The mild weather and beautiful surroundings created a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for leisurely exploration. There was a strong sense of community and warmth as people came together to celebrate the season with joy and gratitude. The island's unique charm and heartfelt hospitality left a lasting impression, making every moment feel like a treasured memory in the making. Christmas vacation for the students at Okinawa University started on December 16 and lasted until January. Kibin had planned to return to the Philippines, with his flight scheduled for December 15 from Tokyo International Airport. Unfortunately, he couldn't book a flight from Naha Airport because it was fully booked for that day. That morning, before Kibin's 7:00 PM flight, Yuto, Kazuki, and Kentaro decided to visit Hibiya Park in Tokyo. They invited Kibin to join them, and he reluctantly agreed. Aiko was also with them, but Kibin chose to set his feelings aside. He planned to stay only for a short while and leave by 5 PM to catch his flight. They arrived at Hibiya Park around 2 PM, having traveled nearly four hours from Okinawa. Upon arrival, they bought food, desserts, coffee, ice cream, and other treats. Kibin also picked up some gifts. The five of them enjoyed the beauty of the park so much that they lost track of time. Kentaro and Aiko went into a gift store to buy something, and at that moment, it was already 5 PM. Kibin knew it was time to leave, so he said goodbye to Kentaro and Yuto. "Where are you going, Kibin?" Yuto asked, a hint of surprise in his voice. "I'm heading to the Philippines for my vacation until the new term in January," Kibin replied, trying to sound casual. Before Kibin left, Kazuki and Yuto wished him a happy birthday. Kibin was touched and thanked them, accepting a gift from Kazuki. "I'll make it up to you guys when I get back," Kibin promised, trying to mask his emotions. Kazuki and Yuto nodded in agreement, and Kibin left, catching a train to the airport. About 30 minutes later, Kentaro and Aiko emerged from the gift shop, carrying a wrapped gift. Kentaro had planned to surprise Kibin for his birthday, but he was the one surprised to learn that Kibin had already left for the Philippines without any chance for them to talk. Kentaro tried calling Kibin, but his phone was off, leaving him feeling helpless. The missed connection left a feeling of unfinished business between them, a story paused with the hope that they could pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other in the new year. As the festive lights of Hibiya Park twinkled around him, Kentaro couldn't shake the sense of loss, hoping that the coming year would bring reconciliation and the renewal of their once-strong friendship. Upon arriving in the Philippines, Kibin felt an overwhelming sense of warmth and comfort that only home could provide. The Christmas vacation with his family was a time of joy and togetherness, filling his heart with happiness. On Christmas Eve, their home was alive with the mouthwatering aroma of traditional Filipino delicacies. Together, they made bibingka, a sweet rice cake baked with banana leaves, creamy fruit salads, and biko, a sticky rice dessert. These treats brought back cherished memories of childhood celebrations, making the holiday feel even more special. Meanwhile, back in Japan, Kentaro was also celebrating the festive season. He spent Christmas with friends and family, enjoying the joyous atmosphere that permeated the streets of Tokyo. The city was adorned with sparkling lights and decorations, and the air was filled with the sounds of carols and laughter. Despite the festivities, Kentaro couldn't help but think of his friend Kibin. He tried reaching out to him through Messenger and Line, sending messages and hoping for a response that never came. Kibin, however, was fully immersed in his family activities. He had chosen to disconnect from his phone, preferring to savor every moment with his loved ones. The laughter, the stories shared around the dinner table, and the simple act of being together were all he needed to feel content and fulfilled. January soon arrived, signaling the end of his vacation. It was time for Kibin to return to Okinawa, Japan. The flight back was quiet and reflective, filled with thoughts of the past weeks spent in the Philippines and the anticipation of what lay ahead. January in Okinawa presented a stark contrast to the bustling holiday season he had just left. The weather was cool and comfortable, perfect for outdoor activities without the oppressive heat of summer. The evenings could get a bit chilly, but never harshly cold. With low rainfall and plenty of sunny days, it was an ideal season for exploration and adventure. The lush greenery of Okinawa remained vibrant, thanks to its subtropical climate. Unlike the mainland, where many trees shed their leaves, Okinawa’s landscape stayed green and lively. The beaches, though quieter in winter, retained their stunning beauty with clear blue waters and pristine sands. The coastline, dotted with palm trees and rocky outcrops, offered picturesque views, perfect for leisurely strolls or peaceful days by the sea. One bright January morning, Kibin decided to take advantage of the mild weather. He headed to the beach, drawn by the serene beauty of the ocean. While swimming might have been a bit chilly, the sand was warm under his feet, and the rhythmic sound of waves created a soothing soundtrack to his thoughts. As he walked along the shore, he noticed a few families and couples enjoying picnics, their laughter mingling with the sound of the sea. As evening fell, Kibin found himself standing on a quiet beach, watching the sun set in a vibrant display of orange and pink hues. The sound of gentle waves lapping the shore and the cool breeze carrying the scent of the ocean created a moment of tranquility and contentment. It captured the essence of what made Okinawa special during the winter season. January also marked the beginning of the whale-watching season in Okinawa. Intrigued by the idea, Kibin signed up for a tour to see the humpback whales that migrated to the warm waters around the Kerama Islands. The boat ride was exhilarating, with the cool sea breeze in his hair and the vast ocean stretching out before him. When the whales finally appeared, breaching and spouting water, it was a magnificent sight. The experience filled Kibin with awe and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Hiking was another activity that thrived in the comfortable weather. One day, Kibin ventured into Yanbaru National Park. The trails offered stunning views of the island’s natural beauty, with dense forests, serene rivers, and vibrant wildlife. The tranquility of the surroundings provided a perfect escape from the everyday hustle, and the hike rejuvenated his spirit. Walking through the streets of Okinawa in January evoked a sense of calm and relaxation. The mild weather and beautiful surroundings created a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for leisurely exploration. The combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and mild climate made every moment feel like a treasured memory in the making. As January rolls around, Okinawa University transforms from a tranquil holiday haven into a bustling hub of renewed energy. The campus, framed by the subtropical beauty of Okinawa, awakens with the arrival of students, their laughter and chatter filling the air once more. The mild winter weather, often accompanied by a gentle breeze, adds a sense of calm to the lively atmosphere. Students, having returned from their Christmas vacations, display a mix of emotions. There’s a palpable excitement and anticipation in the air as friends reunite and share holiday stories. The fresh start of a new semester brings a blend of optimism and determination. Classrooms and lecture halls, previously silent, now resonate with discussions and the sound of notebooks opening and pens scribbling. The university’s common areas, such as cafeterias and lounges, buzz with activity as students settle back into their routines. The warm sunlight filtering through the windows and the occasional chirping of birds create a serene backdrop for this vibrant renewal. Despite the end of the holiday break, there’s a collective sense of purpose and enthusiasm, as students eagerly embrace new academic challenges and opportunities. After his morning class, Kibin headed straight to the park at the edge of the campus. At this hour, the park was deserted, providing a perfect sanctuary for him to relax until lunch. He had brought his own lunch, so there was no need to buy food from the canteen. Settling onto a bench, Kibin put on his earphones and lost himself in his music, enjoying the solitude. The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds created a peaceful ambiance. The winter sun cast a soft glow, making the park feel warm and inviting despite the season. Kibin took a deep breath, appreciating the calm. As he sat there, he noticed Kentaro approaching with a gift and a paper bag in hand. Kibin’s heart skipped a beat. The truth was, he had missed Kentaro terribly but had tried his best not to show it. Deep down, he wanted to talk to Kentaro, to bridge the gap that had formed during their time apart. When Kentaro reached him, he immediately sat down beside Kibin. "How have you been, Kibin? I missed you. You didn’t even say goodbye before you left for the Philippines, and you never replied to my messages. Are you avoiding me?" Kentaro joked, trying to lighten the mood with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Kibin laughed, trying to break the tension. "Missed me? How could you miss me when you had Aiko with you?" he teased, masking his own longing with humor. "We didn't spend Christmas and New Year together," Kentaro replied, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "Were you sad? Did you regret not being with her?" Kibin teased again, trying to keep the conversation light, but his eyes showed concern. "I was sad because you didn't reply to me or keep in touch," Kentaro said sincerely, his eyes meeting Kibin's. Kibin’s laughter faded into a soft smile. "Excuses! I missed you too, but there was no signal in our area, so I couldn't read your messages." Kentaro handed over the gift he was carrying. "What's this? Why are you giving me this, Kentaro?" Kibin asked, puzzled yet curious. "It's a birthday gift for you, Kibin. I wanted to give it to you when we were at Hibiya Park, but when I came back, you were gone. I called you, but your phone was off," Kentaro explained, his tone earnest. "Oh, really? This is for me? Can I open it now?" Kibin asked, his excitement shining through. As Kibin unwrapped the gift, revealing a jacket and a knitted cap, Kentaro took the cap and placed it on Kibin's head. "This cap suits you," Kentaro said with a warm smile. "I know it does, but do you know what suits even better?" Kibin asked playfully, his eyes twinkling. "What?" Kentaro asked, intrigued and leaning in closer. "Us. We suit each other perfectly," Kibin said with a laugh, and Kentaro laughed along with him, feeling a warmth spread through his chest. Jokingly, Kibin mentioned that Aiko might be looking for him, hinting that she was Kentaro's girlfriend. Kentaro clarified that Aiko wasn't his girlfriend yet. Kibin teased further, suggesting that Aiko might get jealous and that Kentaro should go see her or invite her to the park. Kentaro looked at Kibin seriously for a moment. "Kibin, do you want Aiko to be my girlfriend?" he asked, his voice steady but his eyes searching Kibin's face. "No, I don't want her to be your girlfriend," Kibin replied, looking straight into Kentaro's eyes, his voice soft but firm. Kentaro was momentarily stunned and speechless, unsure of what to say. Kibin broke the silence by suggesting they eat their lunch, a gentle smile on his lips. The distance had allowed their friendship to regain its vigor, and Kibin was back to his cheerful self, sharing laughs and light-hearted moments with Kentaro. Despite the teasing and jokes, there was an underlying bond between them that seemed to have grown stronger with time apart, a bond that now felt unbreakable.
