2-preparing for the blood moon

Kaya POV Later that day, while the boys were at school and my parents where goddess knew where, I started to prepare for that evenings ceremony. Once a year, on a blood moon, the unmated wolves of my pack would hold a ceremony where the males would, hopefully, scent their mate. Female wolves could not sense their mate until they were mated and marked, so until that happened it’s up to the male to find his mate. Now that I was eighteen, I had no choice but to go; even though I did not want a mate. I couldn’t help but wonder about what would happen to my brothers if my mate found me and took me away from them. I couldn’t bear the thought of being away from my brothers. I showered and washed my raven-colored hair to be sure that I was clean and purified for the ceremony. While in the shower, my wolf Nova decided to poke her figurative head out. “We need to find mate.” Nova said in my mind. “No, we need to take care of our brothers. We don’t need a mate.” I replied sharply. “Mate will take care of us.” Nova argued back. “He will help with the haze.” I could practically see the glare Nova was directing towards me. The haze was something that came over those of my kind that was completely unpredictable and made my kind incredibly horny. It started when the wolf would turn eighteen and always flared up at the worst possible times, and in that moment all one could think about was s*x. The haze, however, was nothing like being in heat, which only happens after meeting the she-wolfs mate. The heat, I was told, was like a blazing inferno that could only be sated once a she wolf was impregnated. It could be very dangerous for the she-wolf who goes into heat because her mind is clouded which makes being scented by any unmated male a danger to the she-wolf. The haze was like a slow burn that went away after some time or after a wolf had s*x. I scoffed silently, “That is all I need; to make the haze worse by feeding off a male’s haze.” I forced the wall between me and my wolf so that I could have a moment to myself. The wolf side of me relied solely on instinct and sometimes that conflicted with what I was feeling as the human half. I got out of the shower and dried myself off then headed to my bedroom with the thin off-white towel wrapped tightly around my body. Once inside my room, I let the towel fall to my feet and I looked at myself in the small mirror. My eyes glanced at the crescent moon shaped birthmark on my collarbone. I traced the mark slowly, momentarily transfixed on its shape. When I realized I was wasting time, I shook my head and walked over to the bed where my gown was laid out for the ceremony. I stared at the dress and touched the soft silk fabric. When I wore it, it felt like a cloud against my skin and the dress itself was beautiful. Every she-wolf wore the same white silk gown for the ceremony; it was to signify purity and the bridal aspect on finding one’s mate. I sighed as I stared at it for a little longer and then decided to put on skinny jeans and my old faithful friend, my blue hoodie. I left my room without a glance towards the dress, so that I could get the house ready for the boys’ return home from school. Kaya POV Flashback to Kaya at four years old “Mama! Mama!” I shouted as I ran into the kitchen after my mother. “Look at the picture I drew, Mama.” I said as I beamed up at my mother. “That is absolutely beautiful, my love.” My mother said sweetly and affectionately, as always. My smile got bigger, “When will Papa be home?” I asked mother, I wanted to show him the drawing too. “Soon love, soon.” Her mother said, “Your papa has an important job. He’s one of our warriors and he protects the whole pack.” Mother said in a soothing voice. “Would you like some juice, my love?” she offered; trying to soothe the anticipation that was building deep inside me. “Yes please.” I replied excitedly as I moved to sit at the dining table where I would await my juice. A sudden knock on the door startled both mother and daughter; and I watched as mother answered the door and then crumbled to the floor with a loud moaning sob. I looked at my mother on the floor and walked over and found the alpha and two other men standing by him. I couldn’t understand what the alpha was saying to mother, but I knew it wasn’t good by mother’s reaction. I looked up at the Alpha trying to get him to say whatever it was in words I could understand. The Alpha looked at me and crouched down to my level; he took my tiny hands in his and then said the words that would change my life forever. “Your papa isn’t coming home.” {end flashback} Kaya POV Present I woke up in a cold sweat. I hadn't realized that I had fallen asleep on the couch. I always have nightmares about that day; that's the day when everything changed. Kwahu was happily playing in the play pen, and I looked up at the clock. it was time for me to go head to the bus stop to pick up the boys from school. I picked up Kwahu and wrapped him in a warm blanket because, living in Washington, it rains a lot, and we headed out the door to go pick up our brothers. “Hi sissy!” the boys said in unison as they happily scampered off the bus. “Hello boys.” I greeted they're eagerly smiling faces as we walked back to the house in a straight line; trying to get out of the rain quickly. Our mother and stepfather were still not home. “Kaya can we please watch SpongeBob?” asked Diami hopefully as we walked through the front door of the house. “Yes you may, but not for too long because you have to eat dinner. Then you're going to Nana's house because I have to go to the pack house tonight for the ceremony.” I made some grilled cheese for the boys’ dinner and then it was time for us to head over to Nana's house. I bundled up all three and we trudged through the rain to her house. My Nana turned to me and held my hand, “It'll be okay, love. If you find your mate he'll take care of you, and I will take care of the boys.” Nana said to me with love in her eyes. “But Nana, I don't want a mate. I have responsibilities and what if finding my mate makes me go into heat? “Then you and your mate will have a pup and he will take care both you and your blessed child.” Nana replied reassuringly. “Nana, I don't want a pup. I'm only eighteen, and I have the boys.” I glanced over my shoulder to where the packhouse stood. “I have to go, but hopefully I'll see you tomorrow.” “All will be as it should be my strong granddaughter.” She said as she pulled me into a hug. “I will pray to the moon goddess for you.” She finished with a final squeeze. I let go of her and turned back towards my parent’s house.
