Chapter 6: Shadows of Betrayal (Part 1)
The first rays of morning sunlight filtered through the blinds of Damien Blackwood's private hospital room.
Most patients would have welcomed another day of recovery.
Damien welcomed only one thing.
The truth.
He stood beside the window, ignoring the dull ache in his chest. The stitches from his surgery pulled painfully every time he moved, but compared to the pain of believing Ariana had abandoned him for seven years, it was nothing.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Lucas Grant stepped inside carrying a tablet and a thick brown folder.
"You should still be in bed," Lucas said.
Damien smiled faintly.
"And you should stop telling me that."
Lucas placed the folder on the table.
"I've finished reviewing the investigator's notes."
"What did you find?"
Lucas hesitated before opening the file.
"The deeper I looked, the stranger everything became."
He spread several documents across the table.
"There are bank transfers made to people who worked at your old apartment."
Damien frowned.
"The landlord?"
Lucas nodded.
"He received large payments from a company that doesn't officially exist."
"What company?"
Lucas pointed to a name printed on the page.
Silver Crest Holdings.
"I've searched everywhere," Lucas said. "No real offices. No public records. It's a shell company."
Damien's expression darkened.
"Someone paid him to lie."
"Yes."
"And whoever did it had enough money to erase every trace."
Damien clenched his fists.
"They stole seven years from us."
Ariana's Decision
Downstairs, Ariana finished checking on her final patient before her shift ended.
She should have gone home.
Instead, her feet carried her back toward Damien's room.
She stopped outside the door.
Through the small glass window she could see him talking quietly with Lucas.
For a moment, she simply watched.
He looked older than the young man she had fallen in love with.
There were new scars on his face.
More responsibility in his eyes.
Yet when he smiled...
She could still see the university student who had promised to build a future with her.
Before she could knock, Sophia appeared beside her.
"You've been standing here for almost five minutes."
Ariana laughed awkwardly.
"Was it really that long?"
Sophia nodded.
"You still love him."
Ariana looked away.
"I never stopped."
Sophia smiled gently.
"Then maybe it's time you both stop letting the past decide your future."
A Visitor No One Expected
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.
An elderly man wearing a simple gray suit stepped into the hallway.
Unlike the wealthy visitors who usually came to see Damien, this man carried no bodyguards.
Only a weathered leather briefcase.
He approached the reception desk.
"I'm looking for Mr. Damien Blackwood."
The receptionist smiled politely.
"May I ask your name?"
The man adjusted his glasses.
"My name is Thomas Reed."
"I was your grandfather's lawyer."
Lucas happened to step out of Damien's room just in time to hear the introduction.
His eyes narrowed.
"Mr. Reed?"
The old man looked surprised.
"You know me?"
"I've heard your name."
Lucas immediately guided him away from the crowded hallway.
"What are you doing here?"
Thomas lowered his voice.
"I've been hiding for years."
"Hiding from whom?"
"The people who murdered Richard Blackwood."
Lucas stared at him.
"You mean Damien's father?"
Thomas nodded.
"It wasn't an accident."
Lucas felt a chill.
Another secret.
Another lie.
"Does Damien know?"
"No."
"And if I don't tell him soon..."
"I may never get another chance."
Victoria Makes Her Move
Across town, Victoria sat in her luxury apartment, staring at the transfer papers she had been given.
She had not slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Damien whispering Ariana's name.
She picked up her phone and dialed a number.
"It's me."
The familiar deep voice answered.
"Have you signed the papers?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
Victoria hesitated.
"This wasn't part of our agreement."
"You promised Damien would never be hurt."
The man laughed coldly.
"My dear Victoria..."
"I promised many things."
"But promises are useful only until they become inconvenient."
Victoria's grip tightened around the phone.
"What if I refuse?"
Silence.
Then—
"Your father's debts."
Her face turned pale.
"You remember them, don't you?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
Years earlier, her father had borrowed millions from dangerous people.
She had believed those debts had disappeared.
Now she understood.
They had never disappeared.
Someone had simply been using them to control her.
The Hidden Flash Drive
Meanwhile, Lucas inserted the flash drive recovered from the investigator's office into his encrypted laptop.
A folder appeared.
Its title contained only two words.
OPEN LAST.
Lucas frowned.
Instead of opening it, he checked the remaining files.
There were photographs.
Copies of letters.
Bank statements.
Phone records.
Then he found a video.
The timestamp read:
Seven Years Ago.
He clicked Play.
Static filled the screen.
Slowly, the image became clear.
A security camera overlooked the entrance of Damien and Ariana's old apartment building.
Lucas leaned closer.
The date matched the week Damien had returned home.
The footage showed Damien arriving with flowers in one hand and a small gift box in the other.
Lucas smiled sadly.
"He really came back."
Then another figure entered the frame.
A tall man wearing sunglasses.
He approached the landlord.
The two men spoke briefly.
The stranger handed over a thick envelope.
Money.
A lot of money.
The landlord nodded.
Minutes later, Damien entered the building.
When he emerged, his shoulders were slumped.
The flowers were gone.
The hope on his face had disappeared.
Lucas paused the video.
"If Damien sees this..."
"He'll know he was deceived from the beginning."
Just then, his laptop screen flickered.
A warning message appeared.
REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.
Someone else was trying to access the flash drive.
Lucas immediately disconnected the laptop from the internet.
But it was already too late.
The final file—
OPEN LAST—
had vanished.
Someone had deleted it remotely.
Lucas stared at the empty folder.
Whatever had been inside...
It was important enough for someone to erase it in real time.
Lucas stared at the blank laptop screen. The deleted folder was gone, but one detail from the surveillance video refused to leave his mind.
The stranger who had bribed the landlord wore an unusual silver signet ring engraved with a hawk.
He quickly enlarged the image and printed a copy.
"There has to be someone who recognizes this symbol," he muttered.
---
Meanwhile, Damien ignored his doctor's orders and quietly left his hospital room. Wearing a dark hoodie over his hospital clothes, he slipped into a private elevator with Lucas.
"You're risking your recovery," Lucas warned.
"I'm done lying in bed while someone rewrites my life," Damien replied.
"Our first stop?"
"The old apartment."
---
Across town, Ariana finished her shift only to find another anonymous envelope inside her locker.
Instead of a threat, it contained a single photograph.
She and Damien were standing beneath the university oak tree, laughing together.
On the back, someone had written:
"Not every memory deserves to survive."
Ariana's heartbeat quickened.
Someone had been watching them for years.
---
Victoria sat alone in her apartment, staring at the unsigned transfer papers.
For the first time, she questioned everything.
Had she ever truly been Damien's choice?
Or had she simply been chosen by someone else?
Her phone buzzed.
The message contained only four words:
"Finish what you started."
Victoria slowly deleted the message.
"No," she whispered.
"I'm done being your puppet."
But somewhere in the city, the mysterious mastermind smiled.
He had expected her to hesitate.
He had already prepared another plan.
---
That evening, Damien and Lucas reached the abandoned apartment building.
The landlord was gone.
The office had been emptied.
But hidden beneath a loose floorboard, Damien found a rusted metal box.
Inside lay an old notebook.
On the first page was a list of names.
The final name made Damien's blood run cold.
His own uncle.
And beside it...
One word.
Paid.
Damien stared at the faded notebook in silence.
The final page contained more than a list of names.
Beside each name was a date.
Some had been crossed out with red ink.
Others had a single word written beside them:
Silent.
Lucas carefully turned another page.
"This wasn't just a payment record," he said.
"It looks like a list of people who knew something."
Damien's expression hardened.
"And those who knew too much..."
"Were silenced."
Just then, a folded piece of paper slipped from the notebook.
Lucas picked it up.
It was an old receipt from a safety deposit box at Westbridge National Bank.
The deposit box number was handwritten across the top.
"Maybe this is what they were trying to hide," Lucas said.
Damien nodded.
"We're going to the bank."
---
At the hospital, Ariana could not stop thinking about the anonymous photograph.
She showed it to Sophia.
"This isn't a coincidence," Sophia whispered.
"Someone is trying to frighten you."
Ariana looked down at the picture.
"If they wanted me to disappear, why warn me first?"
Sophia had no answer.
Before either woman could speak again, the hospital's receptionist hurried toward them.
"Nurse Ariana!"
"There's an elderly woman asking for you."
Ariana frowned.
"I don't know anyone..."
She stopped speaking as she entered the waiting area.
The woman looked familiar.
Very familiar.
"You don't remember me," the stranger said gently.
"But I remember you."
She reached into her handbag and produced another photograph.
It showed Ariana as a little girl standing beside her late mother.
The older woman smiled sadly.
"I was your mother's closest friend."
"My name is Margaret."
"There are things your mother wanted you to know."
---
Meanwhile, Victoria drove to an abandoned chapel on the outskirts of the city.
The mysterious man was already waiting.
"You failed," he said without turning around.
"I haven't betrayed you."
"But you're beginning to question me."
Victoria swallowed hard.
"I just want Damien alive."
The man finally faced her.
His expression was cold.
"If Damien opens that safety deposit box..."
"Our secrets will be exposed."
Victoria's eyes widened.
"You know about the key?"
"I know everything."
He stepped closer.
"So listen carefully."
"Before sunset tomorrow..."
"That box must disappear."
---
Back in the city, Damien and Lucas arrived at Westbridge National Bank.
The manager greeted Damien with obvious surprise.
"Mr. Blackwood."
"We need access to a safety deposit box."
The manager checked the receipt.
His face suddenly changed.
"I'm sorry..."
"This box was opened earlier today."
Damien felt his heart sink.
"By whom?"
The manager hesitated.
"He presented the correct authorization documents."
Lucas leaned forward.
"What did he look like?"
The manager thought for a moment.
"Tall."
"Gray suit."
"Silver hair."
Damien's pulse quickened.
Thomas Reed.
The lawyer who had claimed he was coming to help.
Had he betrayed them...
Or had someone been pretending to be him?
As Damien and Lucas exchanged worried glances, a security guard rushed into the lobby.
"Sir!"
"The vault camera has gone offline."
At the same instant, the bank lights flickered.
Then everything went dark.
Somewhere in the darkness, a gun clicked.
A calm voice echoed through the vault.
"Mr. Blackwood..."
"You should have stayed in the hospital."
