Chapter 7: The Vault of Secrets
The emergency lights cast long red shadows across the bank's underground vault.
Every customer had been ordered to remain still.
Damien Blackwood slowly raised his hands, his eyes fixed on the masked man standing at the end of the corridor.
The stranger held a pistol fitted with a suppressor.
His voice was calm.
"Mr. Blackwood."
"You've been asking too many questions."
Lucas instinctively stepped in front of Damien.
"If you're here for him, you'll have to go through me."
The masked man chuckled.
"I'm not here to kill anyone."
"I'm here to collect something that doesn't belong to you."
His gaze shifted toward the safety deposit boxes.
"The documents."
Damien frowned.
"You've already emptied the vault."
"Not everything."
Before anyone could react, the bank's backup generator roared to life.
The lights flashed on.
Security alarms echoed through the building.
The masked man cursed under his breath.
"Another time."
He hurled a smoke grenade onto the floor.
White smoke filled the corridor.
Lucas rushed forward, but by the time the smoke cleared, the intruder had vanished.
Only a black leather glove remained on the ground.
Lucas picked it up carefully.
Inside the glove was a tiny silver emblem shaped like a hawk.
"The same symbol," he whispered.
Damien nodded.
"The man from the surveillance video."
---
The Hidden Envelope
The bank manager apologized repeatedly as he opened the damaged safety deposit box.
"I'm certain it was sealed this morning."
Lucas examined every corner.
Most of the contents were gone.
Then Damien noticed something unusual.
A strip of yellowed paper was wedged beneath the wooden lining.
He carefully pulled it free.
It was an old envelope.
Across the front were four handwritten words.
If Damien Returns.
His heart skipped a beat.
He opened it.
Inside was a faded photograph.
A young Richard Blackwood stood beside Thomas Reed.
Between them was a smiling woman holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back someone had written:
"Protect her before they discover the truth."
There was no name.
Only a date.
Twenty-eight years earlier.
Lucas stared at the photograph.
"Who is the woman?"
Damien slowly shook his head.
"I've never seen her before."
---
Ariana Learns the Past
Back at the hospital, Ariana met Margaret in the quiet hospital chapel.
The elderly woman carried a small wooden box.
"I promised your mother I would keep this safe."
She placed it gently into Ariana's hands.
Inside was a silver key.
Beneath it lay a worn diary tied with a blue ribbon.
"My mother wrote this?"
Margaret nodded.
"She feared someone would come looking for it."
"Why?"
"Because she knew something about the Blackwood family that powerful people wanted buried forever."
Ariana stared at the diary.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"You were only a child."
"And she hoped the danger had ended."
Margaret sighed.
"It never did."
---
Victoria's Decision
Victoria sat alone in her apartment.
The transfer papers remained unsigned.
Her phone rang.
It was the mysterious man.
"Have you completed your assignment?"
"No."
A long silence followed.
"You disappoint me."
Victoria stood and walked to the window.
"I won't hurt an innocent woman."
His voice became colder.
"Then I'll remind you why you work for me."
Seconds later, a message appeared on her phone.
It contained a photograph of her father.
He was tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Tears filled Victoria's eyes.
"What have you done?"
"Nothing."
"Yet."
The call ended.
Victoria collapsed into a chair.
For the first time, she realized she wasn't helping a powerful businessman.
She was trapped by a monster.
---
The Kidnapping
That evening Ariana finished reading the first pages of her mother's diary.
Before she could continue, Sophia knocked on the door.
"Ariana?"
"The hospital director wants to see you."
"I'll be there in a minute."
Ariana placed the diary back into the wooden box and walked into the hallway.
The corridor was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
As she reached the elevator, the doors opened.
A hospital orderly stood inside.
"I've been sent to escort you."
She frowned.
"I've never seen you before."
The man smiled.
"You won't remember me."
Before Ariana could react, a cloth covered her mouth.
A sweet chemical smell filled the air.
Her vision blurred.
The hallway spun around her.
The last thing she saw was the elevator doors closing.
---
Minutes later, Damien's car screeched into the hospital parking lot.
He hurried inside with Lucas close behind.
Sophia ran toward them, panic written across her face.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
"What happened?" Damien demanded.
"It's Ariana..."
"She never came to the director's office."
"We can't find her anywhere."
Damien's face drained of color.
Lucas looked toward the security desk.
"Check every camera."
The security officer swallowed nervously.
"They've all been erased."
Damien clenched his fists.
"No..."
Outside the hospital, a black van disappeared into the night.
Inside, Ariana slowly opened her eyes.
Her hands were tied.
Across from her sat a man dressed entirely in black.
He smiled.
"Welcome back, Miss Cole."
"You've been asking too many questions."
The van sped into the darkness.
The black van sped through the rain-soaked streets, its tinted windows hiding everything inside.
Ariana forced herself to remain calm.
Her hands were bound, but her mind was clear.
She quietly studied the men around her.
There were three of them.
The driver never spoke.
The man beside him constantly checked his watch.
The third man—the one dressed in black—sat opposite Ariana, watching her every move.
"You don't seem frightened," he said.
Ariana looked him in the eye.
"You kidnapped me."
"What exactly do you expect me to say?"
A faint smile crossed his face.
"You remind me of your mother."
Ariana's heartbeat quickened.
"You knew her."
"I knew enough."
He reached into his coat and removed an old silver locket.
He placed it in Ariana's hands.
"This belonged to her."
Ariana stared at the locket in disbelief.
"My mother never took this off."
"Where did you get it?"
The man's expression grew serious.
"She asked someone to keep it safe."
"She knew one day you would need it."
Before Ariana could ask another question, the van slowed to a stop.
The doors opened.
An abandoned factory stood before them.
Rain poured through the broken roof as the men led Ariana inside.
---
Back at the hospital, Damien refused to leave.
Lucas approached carrying a tablet.
"I recovered part of the hospital's external security footage."
"Did you find the van?"
Lucas nodded.
"For two seconds."
He enlarged the blurry image.
"There."
Damien leaned closer.
"The license plate is missing."
"It was removed deliberately."
"But look at the windshield."
A small blue parking permit was attached to the corner of the glass.
Lucas searched the city database.
After several seconds, one location appeared.
Raven Industrial Estate.
Damien immediately grabbed his car keys.
"Let's go."
Lucas stopped him.
"You can barely stand."
"I don't care."
"They have Ariana."
"And I'm not losing her again."
---
Across the city, Victoria sat in silence after receiving another threatening message.
She opened her laptop and began searching through old company records connected to Silver Crest Holdings.
Most files had been deleted.
One remained.
It contained a single employee list.
Near the bottom was a familiar name.
Thomas Reed.
Victoria frowned.
"So he wasn't just your grandfather's lawyer."
She quickly copied the file onto a flash drive.
"If Damien sees this..."
"...everything changes."
At that very moment, someone unlocked the door to her apartment.
Victoria froze.
She slowly looked up.
A shadow stepped into the room.
"You've become curious," the stranger said coldly.
"And curiosity..."
He smiled without warmth.
"...can be fatal."
Victoria's pulse raced as the apartment door slowly closed behind him.
