The Billionaire's Forgotten Promise Chapter 20: The Hospital of Hope The rain had finally stopped. A pale sunrise spread across the city as Damien Blackwood's convoy pulled into the parking lot of an abandoned medical complex on the outskirts of town. Rust covered the gates, weeds pushed through the cracked pavement, and the once-proud hospital stood silent against the morning sky. A faded sign still hung above the entrance. BLACKWOOD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Damien stepped out of the SUV and stared at the building. "My father built this." Father Gabriel nodded. "It was his greatest dream." "He wanted every child to receive treatment, whether they could pay or not." Ariana slowly walked toward the entrance. Even after years of neglect, she could still imagine the hospital filled with doctors, nurses, and hopeful families. "It deserves another chance," she whispered. --- The Forgotten Wing Lucas forced open the rusted front doors. The lobby echoed with their footsteps. Dust covered the reception desk, but the walls were still decorated with colorful paintings made by children. Victoria smiled sadly. "They never took these down." Father Gabriel looked around the empty hallway. "Richard refused to replace them." "He said they reminded everyone why the hospital existed." Lucas unfolded the blueprint they had recovered. "The archive should be beneath the east wing." They followed a narrow corridor lined with abandoned patient rooms. Most doors hung open. Old wheelchairs and medical carts remained exactly where they had been left years ago. At the end of the hallway stood a locked steel elevator. Damien inserted the brass key. The control panel lit up. "It still has power," Lucas said in surprise. The elevator descended slowly. The display counted downward. B1... B2... B3... Finally, the doors opened. --- The Underground Archive A vast underground chamber stretched before them. Rows of climate-controlled cabinets filled the room. Thousands of files were stored neatly inside. Ariana stared in amazement. "This is incredible." Lucas opened one cabinet. Each file contained records of hospitals, scholarships, food programs, and families helped by the Blackwood Foundation. "They preserved everything." Damien smiled. "My father wanted history to survive." Father Gabriel walked toward the center of the room. There stood a bronze statue of Richard Blackwood. At its base was a simple inscription. 'True wealth is measured by the lives you lift.' Ariana touched the words gently. "He never wanted to be remembered as a billionaire." "He wanted to be remembered as someone who cared." --- A Dangerous Discovery Lucas connected his laptop to the archive's secure server. "This system hasn't been accessed in eighteen years." As the database loaded, a hidden folder appeared. Its title read: PROJECT NEW DAWN Damien frowned. "I've never heard of it." Lucas opened the file. Inside were plans for building free hospitals across the country, funded by a private trust Richard had established shortly before his death. "He planned all of this?" Victoria whispered. Father Gabriel nodded. "But he never had the chance to finish." Before Lucas could continue reading, another message appeared on the screen. WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED The room fell silent. Someone else had connected to the archive. Lucas immediately disconnected the terminal. "They've found us." Suddenly, the emergency lights began flashing red. A computerized voice echoed through the underground level. Security lockdown activated. Steel doors started sliding shut throughout the archive. Damien grabbed the folder containing Project New Dawn. "We're taking this with us." Ariana looked toward the closing exit. "We have less than a minute." Victoria pointed to a maintenance tunnel at the far end of the room. "There!" The four of them sprinted across the archive as the heavy doors slammed shut behind them. Just before they reached the tunnel, Damien looked back. For a brief second, he saw a shadow standing at the opposite end of the archive. The stranger didn't chase them. He simply watched. Then he smiled. Damien realized something unsettling. The mysterious organization wasn't trying to destroy the archive anymore. They wanted Damien to find it. And that meant the greatest secret of all was still waiting to be uncovered – : The Sealed Room The maintenance tunnel was narrow and damp, its walls stained by decades of moisture. The only light came from Lucas's flashlight, which cast long shadows ahead of them. Behind them, the heavy steel doors of the underground archive slammed shut with a deafening boom. "We're safe for the moment," Lucas said, trying to catch his breath. "For the moment," Damien replied. "Whoever was watching us wanted us to find Project New Dawn." Ariana held the folder tightly against her chest. "Why would anyone do that?" Before Damien could answer, Father Gabriel stopped walking. "Because Project New Dawn was only the beginning." He pointed his lantern toward an old wooden door at the end of the tunnel. A faded metal plaque hung above it. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY The lock was covered in dust, but Damien noticed something unusual. "There are fresh scratches." Lucas crouched beside the handle. "Someone opened this recently." Using the brass key, Damien slowly turned the lock. Click. The door creaked open. Inside was a small office preserved exactly as it had been years ago. A desk stood near the window. A bookshelf filled one wall. On the desk rested an old tape recorder and a leather-bound journal. Everything was untouched. Ariana carefully opened the journal. The first page was written in Richard Blackwood's handwriting. «If this room has been opened, then the people I trusted most have finally found their way here.» Damien swallowed hard. His father's words felt as though they had crossed time itself. Lucas searched the shelves until he discovered a hidden compartment behind a row of books. Inside lay a sealed envelope marked: CONFIDENTIAL – TO MY SON Damien reached for it, but before he could break the seal, the tape recorder suddenly clicked on by itself. Static crackled through the tiny speaker. Then a familiar voice filled the silent room. "Damien... if you're listening to this, it means the truth can no longer remain hidden." Everyone froze. The recording continued. "There is one person you must find before anyone else does." "He has protected our family's greatest secret for over twenty years." A pause followed. Then Richard spoke one final sentence. "His name is..." The tape suddenly screeched. The lights flickered violently. The recorder went silent. Lucas stared at the machine in disbelief. "No..." "It stopped." At the same moment, a red warning light began flashing above the office door. An automated voice echoed through the tunnel. Unauthorized access detected. Security response activated. Heavy footsteps echoed from somewhere beyond the corridor. Damien slipped the sealed envelope into his jacket. "We're leaving. Now." As the group disappeared deeper into the tunnel, none of them noticed a hidden camera mounted above the office door. A tiny green light blinked once. Someone was still watching. Scene 2: The Chase Underground The warning siren echoed through the underground passage. Red emergency lights flashed on and off, bathing the tunnel in a crimson glow. "Move!" Lucas shouted. The group ran as the sound of heavy boots grew louder behind them. Damien stayed close to Ariana, making sure she never fell behind. The tunnel split into two directions. Lucas stopped abruptly. "Left or right?" Father Gabriel studied the faded markings on the wall. "The left tunnel leads back to the city." "The right tunnel leads somewhere few people remember." "Where?" Victoria asked. Father Gabriel looked at Damien. "To the original Blackwood estate." Damien didn't hesitate. "We go right." They hurried into the darker passage. The air became colder with every step. Old electrical cables hung from the ceiling, and puddles reflected the flashing emergency lights. Suddenly, Ariana stumbled. Damien caught her before she hit the ground. "Are you alright?" She nodded, breathing heavily. "I'm fine." Damien smiled reassuringly. "We're getting through this together." For a brief moment, despite the danger around them, Ariana felt hope. They continued forward until the tunnel opened into a massive underground chamber. Rusted railway tracks crossed the floor. An old maintenance train sat silently on the rails, untouched for decades. Lucas walked closer. "The battery is dead..." He paused as he noticed something unusual. "No..." He climbed into the driver's cabin. "The engine has been replaced recently." Damien frowned. "Someone has been using this train." Father Gabriel pointed toward a fresh set of footprints leading into the carriage. "We're not alone." Lucas turned the ignition. To everyone's surprise, the engine roared to life. Victoria smiled with relief. "It still works!" Before anyone could board, voices echoed through the tunnel behind them. "There they are!" Flashlights swept across the chamber. The pursuers had found them. "Get on!" Damien ordered. Lucas pushed the controls forward. The old train lurched violently before rolling along the tracks. As it gathered speed, one of the masked men reached the platform and leaped toward the last carriage. His fingers caught the metal railing. Damien spun around. The stranger was climbing aboard. The chase had entered a new stage.
