Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in the Letters
The hospital room fell silent.
Ariana stood beside Damien's bed, the old brown envelope trembling in her hands.
Neither of them spoke.
Seven years of unanswered questions hung between them.
Finally, Ariana broke the silence.
"You said you wrote to me..."
Damien nodded weakly.
"Every week."
Her eyes widened.
"Every week?"
"I promised I'd come back."
His voice cracked.
"When I got to Westbridge City, my uncle helped me get a job at a small investment company. I worked during the day and studied at night. Every paycheck I earned, I saved for our future."
Ariana felt her throat tighten.
"I thought you had forgotten me."
Damien slowly shook his head.
"Never."
He closed his eyes for a moment, as if gathering the strength to continue.
"I wrote letters. I called your old number. I even sent money to help you through school."
"I never received anything," Ariana whispered.
"I know."
He looked at her with quiet sorrow.
"After months without a reply, I came back to our apartment."
Ariana's heart raced.
"You came back?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
Damien stared toward the window, where the morning sun struggled to break through the clouds.
"The landlord told me you had moved away."
Ariana frowned.
"I never moved."
"He said you left with another man."
The words struck Ariana like a slap.
"What?"
"He told me you were engaged... and that you never wanted to see me again."
A tear slid down Ariana's cheek.
"That's a lie."
"I know that now."
She shook her head in disbelief.
"I waited for you, Damien."
"For more than two years."
"I went to the bus station every Friday because you once told me you'd come home on a Friday."
"I waited until the last bus left."
"Every single week."
Damien's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry."
"You have no idea how many nights I hated myself."
"I thought you chose someone else."
Ariana wiped her face.
"And I thought you abandoned me."
The room fell silent again.
Two hearts, broken by the same lie.
Neither had betrayed the other.
Both had been betrayed.
Just then, Lucas Grant knocked gently before entering.
"Mr. Blackwood."
Damien looked up.
"What is it?"
Lucas glanced at Ariana, then closed the door.
"I found something."
He placed a thin file on the bed.
"I hired a private investigator three years ago."
Damien frowned.
"You never told me."
"I wanted proof before saying anything."
Lucas opened the file.
Inside were photographs...
Old phone records...
Bank receipts...
And copies of letters.
"The investigator discovered that someone intercepted every letter you sent."
Ariana gasped.
"What?"
Lucas nodded.
"They were never lost."
"They were stolen."
Damien's expression darkened.
"Who?"
Lucas took a slow breath.
"The investigator believed only one person had access to your apartment mailbox, your contact information... and your travel schedule."
"Who?" Damien demanded.
Lucas hesitated.
Then he spoke.
"Your uncle."
Damien froze.
"My... uncle?"
"The man who offered you your first job."
"The man who told you Ariana had left."
"The man who convinced you to stop searching."
Silence filled the room.
Damien's hands curled into fists.
"No..."
"He wouldn't..."
Lucas lowered his head.
"I'm afraid the evidence says otherwise."
Outside the room, hidden behind the slightly open door, another person listened.
Victoria.
Her face turned pale.
She hadn't expected this.
If Damien discovered the full truth...
Everything would change.
She quietly reached into her handbag and took out her phone.
There was only one person she needed to call.
As the line connected, she whispered,
"They're getting too close."
A deep voice answered from the other end.
"Then make sure they never learn the whole truth."
Victoria slowly smiled.
"I understand."
She ended the call.
Inside the room, Ariana and Damien believed the worst was behind them.
They had no idea...
The people who had destroyed their love seven years ago...
...were already planning to destroy it again.
Scene One: The Missing Investigator
Lucas left the hospital just before sunset.
The file containing the intercepted letters rested on the passenger seat beside him.
If Damien's uncle had truly been involved, there had to be more evidence.
Half an hour later, Lucas arrived at the office of the private investigator he had hired three years earlier.
The building looked strangely quiet.
The front door was unlocked.
Lucas stepped inside cautiously.
"Mr. Harris?"
No answer.
The office was in ruins.
Drawers had been pulled out.
Papers were scattered across the floor.
A computer monitor lay smashed against the wall.
Someone had searched the office thoroughly.
Lucas walked deeper inside until he noticed a framed family photograph lying face down.
Underneath it was a small flash drive.
He picked it up.
Before he could examine it, footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Lucas immediately switched off his flashlight and stepped behind the door.
Two men entered the office.
"Search again," one of them said.
"The boss wants every copy destroyed."
Lucas frowned.
Destroyed?
The men searched for several minutes before leaving.
Only after their footsteps disappeared did Lucas slip out through the back entrance.
Whatever was on the flash drive...
Someone was willing to kill for it.
Scene Two: Another Letter
Back at the hospital, Ariana carefully unfolded another letter from the old envelope.
The paper smelled faintly of ink and age.
She read quietly.
"Ariana, today I walked past a small flower shop and saw the white lilies you love. I almost bought them, imagining the day I'd bring them home to you. Every dream I have still begins with your smile. I don't know why you've stopped writing, but I'll keep believing in us until I hear the truth from your own lips."
A tear rolled down Ariana's cheek.
She whispered,
"You never stopped believing."
She folded the letter and held it close.
For the first time in years, the weight she had carried began to lift.
Their love had not failed.
It had been stolen.
Scene Three: Victoria's Meeting
That night, Victoria arrived at the top floor of a luxury hotel.
A man in a dark suit opened the private lounge door.
"He's waiting."
She entered.
A mysterious figure stood by the window overlooking the city.
"You called," Victoria said.
"I did."
His voice was calm.
"You've grown close to Damien."
Victoria nodded.
"He trusts me."
"Good."
He turned slightly, but his face remained hidden in shadow.
"You must delay him."
"Delay him from what?"
"Finding the truth."
Victoria hesitated.
"I love him."
The man laughed softly.
"No."
"You love the life he can give you."
Victoria lowered her eyes.
She couldn't deny it.
"If Damien uncovers the past," the man continued, "everything we've built will collapse."
He slid a small envelope across the table.
"What's this?"
"Hospital transfer documents."
Victoria opened them.
Ariana's name was printed across the top.
"You want her transferred?"
"If she leaves the hospital, Damien loses his closest connection to the past."
Victoria stared at the papers.
For the first time, she wondered whether she had gone too far.
Scene Four: Damien Makes a Decision
The following morning, Dr. Ethan Morris entered Damien's room.
"You're recovering well."
Damien smiled.
"So I can leave?"
The doctor laughed.
"Absolutely not."
"You need at least another week."
Damien slowly sat up.
"I don't have a week."
"There are people trying to kill me."
"And someone destroyed seven years of my life."
Dr. Morris sighed.
"I understand."
"But if you ignore medical advice, you could end up back in surgery."
Damien looked toward the window.
"I've already lost seven years."
"I'm not losing another day."
Scene Five: A Warning in the Parking Garage
Late that evening, Ariana finished her shift.
The parking garage was unusually quiet.
She unlocked her car and reached for the door handle.
Something caught her eye.
A small white envelope rested beneath the windshield wiper.
There was no stamp.
No address.
Only her name.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed her and Damien together at university, smiling beneath an old oak tree.
Across the picture, written in bold red ink, were the words:
"Some promises should stay forgotten."
Ariana's heartbeat quickened.
She looked around the garage.
No one.
Or so it seemed.
Hidden behind a concrete pillar, a man watched her through the lens of a camera.
He quietly spoke into a radio.
"Target has received the warning."
A cold voice answered,
"Good."
"If she refuses to walk away..."
"...make sure she never gets another chance."
