Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Billionaire The red EMERGENCY SURGERY light glowed above the operating room. Ariana stood outside the doors, staring at the bright sign as if willing it to change. Her gloved hands were clasped tightly together, though she didn't realize it until her fingers began to ache. Damien Blackwood was fighting for his life. The same man who had once held her hand beneath the old oak tree on their university campus. The same man who had promised, "I'll come back for you." Now, after seven years of silence, fate had brought him back to her covered in blood. The operating room doors swung open for a moment as another nurse hurried inside with blood bags. Dr. Ethan Morris looked over his shoulder. "Scalpel." "Suction." "Pressure is still dropping." The doors closed again. Ariana released a slow breath. "Are you alright?" Sophia's gentle voice broke through her thoughts. Ariana forced a smile. "I'm fine." Sophia crossed her arms. "You've said that three times tonight." "I'm just tired." "No," Sophia replied quietly. "You know him." Ariana froze. She hadn't expected anyone to notice. "I saw your face when you recognized him," Sophia continued. "Who is he?" For several seconds, Ariana said nothing. Finally, she whispered, "He was... someone I loved." Sophia's eyes softened. "What happened?" Ariana looked through the small glass window into the operating room. "He disappeared." "Without saying goodbye?" "He promised he'd come back." "And he never did." Sophia gently squeezed her shoulder. "I'm sorry." Before Ariana could answer, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor. Three luxury vehicles had stopped outside the hospital. Men and women dressed in expensive suits entered the building. At the front was an elegant woman in her early fifties. Her silver necklace glittered beneath the hallway lights. Her expression was cold. Powerful. Behind her walked lawyers, security guards, and assistants. Every nurse in the hallway stepped aside. Lucas Grant approached immediately. "Mrs. Blackwood." "You said my son was alive." "Yes, ma'am." She nodded once. "I want the best surgeons in this hospital." "They're already operating." Her sharp gaze landed on Ariana. "You." Ariana looked up. "Were you the nurse treating him?" "Yes, ma'am." "Then you will personally oversee his recovery after surgery." Ariana hesitated. "I..." Lucas interrupted gently. "Mrs. Blackwood trusts very few people." The older woman studied Ariana for another moment before speaking. "If my son survives..." She paused. "...your future will change forever." Ariana frowned. She had no idea what those words meant. But something in the woman's voice made her uneasy. It sounded less like gratitude... ...and more like a warning. Two hours later... The operating room doors finally opened. Everyone stood. Dr. Morris removed his surgical mask. "The surgery was successful." Relief swept through the hallway. "But..." The doctor continued. "He lost a great deal of blood." "His condition remains critical." "The next twenty-four hours will determine whether he survives." Mrs. Blackwood closed her eyes briefly before regaining her composure. "Can I see him?" "For only a minute." As everyone prepared to enter, Lucas's phone vibrated. He answered immediately. His face lost all color. "What?" Silence. "Are you certain?" Another pause. "I'll handle it." He ended the call and looked toward Mrs. Blackwood. "We have another problem." She turned. "What now?" Lucas lowered his voice. "The police examined Mr. Blackwood's SUV." "They found evidence that the brake lines were deliberately cut." Mrs. Blackwood's expression hardened. "So..." "It wasn't an accident." Lucas nodded. "It was attempted murder." At that exact moment... Inside the intensive care unit... Damien's fingers moved. His heartbeat quickened. His eyelids slowly opened. Ariana, adjusting his IV drip, looked up in surprise. Their eyes met. For the first time in seven years. His lips trembled. In a weak, broken whisper, he spoke just two words. "...Ariana..." Before she could answer... The heart monitor screamed. BEEEEEEEEEP! Additional Scene for Chapter 2 The shrill alarm from the heart monitor echoed through the intensive care unit. "Code Blue!" one of the nurses shouted. Within seconds, Dr. Ethan Morris and two other doctors rushed into the room. Ariana stepped aside as the medical team surrounded Damien's bed. "His blood pressure is dropping again." "Prepare another unit of blood." "Increase the oxygen." The room became a blur of movement. Ariana watched helplessly as the doctors fought to stabilize the man she had once dreamed of spending her life with. Every instinct told her to run to his side, but years of professional training kept her rooted where she stood. After several tense minutes, the heart monitor settled into a steady rhythm. Dr. Morris let out a long breath. "He's stable... for now." Relief washed over the room. As the other nurses left, Ariana quietly adjusted Damien's blanket. His eyes remained closed, but she could still hear his weak voice in her mind. "Ariana..." He remembered her. She wasn't sure whether that brought comfort or pain. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Mrs. Blackwood entered the room with Lucas standing behind her. The older woman's eyes never left Damien. "He called your name," she said calmly. Ariana hesitated. "Yes, ma'am." "How do you know my son?" For a moment, the room was silent. "We attended university together." "Only classmates?" Ariana lowered her gaze. "We were... very close." Mrs. Blackwood studied her carefully. "I see." Lucas noticed the sadness in Ariana's eyes but remained silent. Finally, Mrs. Blackwood spoke again. "Whatever happened between you and Damien belongs in the past." "Right now, your responsibility is to keep him alive." Ariana nodded. "I understand." The older woman turned toward the door before stopping. "If my son wakes again..." "Call me immediately." "Yes, ma'am." After they left, Lucas remained outside the room. His phone vibrated again. A message flashed across the screen. The mechanic who inspected the SUV has disappeared. Lucas frowned. Minutes later, another message arrived. Security footage from the parking garage has been deleted. Someone was covering their tracks. He immediately dialed a private number. "I need every surveillance camera within five kilometers of the accident scene." A voice answered. "Already working on it, sir." "And Lucas..." "Yes?" "Be careful." "They may come after anyone who gets too close." Lucas ended the call and looked through the ICU window. Damien lay unconscious while Ariana quietly checked his IV line. Neither of them knew that the accident had been planned long before that rainy night. Across the city, inside a dark office, a man watched the hospital through a live security feed. His face remained hidden in the shadows. He slowly swirled a glass of expensive whiskey before speaking. "So..." "Damien survived." One of his men lowered his head. "Yes, sir." The mysterious man smiled faintly. "No matter." "There is always another opportunity." He picked up a photograph from his desk. It showed Damien and Ariana smiling together during their university days. Without hesitation, he dropped the photograph into a fireplace. The flames quickly consumed it. "Destroy anyone who stands between me and the Blackwood empire." The man beside him nodded. "What about the nurse?" The stranger stared into the fire. "If Damien remembers her..." "...she becomes a problem." Back at the hospital, Ariana looked out the ICU window at the rain falling outside. She had no idea that before dawn, someone would already be planning her death.
