Chapter 10: Container 41

1060 Words
The next morning arrived far too quickly. Aria stood in front of the mirror inside her room, staring at her reflection. Dark circles sat beneath her eyes. The events of the past few days had changed everything. Her father's debt. The attack. Her mother's secret. The journal. The Serpents. And now they were about to walk directly into the middle of it all. A knock sounded. She already knew who it was. "Come in." The door opened. Luca stepped inside. Dressed entirely in black. His expression was unreadable. Business mode. Dangerous mode. "Ready?" Aria grabbed her jacket. "No." His eyebrow lifted slightly. "Good." "What?" "The people who think they're ready usually die first." She rolled her eyes. "That's incredibly reassuring." "I wasn't trying to reassure you." Despite herself, she smiled. Luca noticed. For a brief second, something softened in his gaze. Then it disappeared. Just as quickly as it had appeared. "Let's go." --- An hour later, their convoy arrived at the abandoned shipping yard. The place looked like a ghost town. Rusting cranes towered above rows of forgotten containers. The ocean stretched endlessly beyond them. Cold. Dark. Silent. Exactly the kind of place criminals liked to hide secrets. Aria stepped out of the SUV. The salty air hit her face immediately. Around them, Luca's security team spread out. Weapons concealed. Eyes alert. Nobody was taking chances. Marco approached. "Perimeter secure." Luca nodded. "Warehouse 13." The group moved. Aria stayed close to Luca. Closer than she intended. Yet every time she drifted farther away, she somehow found herself near him again. The realization annoyed her. Almost as much as it comforted her. The warehouse stood at the far end of the docks. Old. Abandoned. Covered in rust. The massive doors creaked as they entered. Dust floated through the sunlight. Everything inside appeared untouched. Until Luca spotted something. "Over there." Aria followed his gaze. A staircase. Leading underground. Marco frowned. "This wasn't on any blueprints." Luca wasn't surprised. "Because it wasn't supposed to be." The hidden staircase descended beneath the warehouse. The air grew colder with every step. Eventually they reached a steel door. And painted across it— A black serpent. The symbol sent chills down Aria's spine. "We're in the right place." Luca examined the lock. Then looked toward her. "Container 41." "What about it?" "The numbers led us here." Aria frowned. "But this isn't a container." Luca's expression darkened. "No." His hand touched the steel door. "This is what's underneath it." --- The lock broke after several minutes. The door slowly opened. A hidden chamber waited beyond. Everyone froze. The room was enormous. Far larger than anyone expected. Shelves lined the walls. Filled with documents. Weapons. Cash. Gold. Enough wealth to fund a small country. "What is this place?" Aria whispered. Luca's face remained cold. "The Serpents' old treasury." Marco looked shocked. "They left all this behind?" "No." Luca walked forward. "They were forced to." Years ago, apparently. When Elena escaped. When the war began. Aria slowly entered the chamber. Something felt strange. Familiar. As if her mother had once stood exactly where she stood now. Then she noticed a wooden box. Hidden beneath one of the shelves. Unlike everything else, it looked untouched. Waiting. Her pulse quickened. "Luca." He immediately turned. "What?" "I think I found something." Everyone gathered around. The box was old. Worn by time. Yet one thing remained visible. A name. Elena. Aria's breath caught. Her mother's name. Written clearly across the lid. Luca crouched beside her. Together they opened it. Inside rested a single silver key. Silence. Complete silence. Aria stared. After all this time. After all the attacks. After all the lies. They finally found it. The key. The very object people were willing to kill for. But that wasn't all. A folded letter sat beneath it. Aria immediately recognized the handwriting. Her mother's. Hands trembling, she unfolded the paper. And began reading. My dearest daughter, The room disappeared. Only the letter mattered. If you are reading this, then you survived longer than I ever hoped. Tears instantly filled Aria's eyes. I wish I could have known you. Her vision blurred. I wish I could have watched you grow. A tear rolled down her cheek. Luca remained beside her. Silent. Protective. Present. The key opens more than a door. Aria frowned. What did that mean? She continued reading. It opens the truth. Everyone exchanged glances. Trust Luca Moretti. The words stunned the room. Aria looked up. Luca looked equally surprised. "He knew your mother?" Marco asked. "No." Luca's answer came immediately. The letter continued. One day he will protect you, even when you don't understand why. Aria's heartbeat accelerated. Slowly, she lifted her eyes toward Luca. He was already looking at her. Neither spoke. Neither moved. For one strange moment, everything else faded. The danger. The war. The secrets. All of it. Only the two of them remained. Then— BANG! A gunshot exploded through the chamber. The bullet slammed into the wall inches from Aria's head. Chaos erupted. "DOWN!" Luca reacted instantly. Throwing himself toward her. Both crashed to the floor. More gunshots followed. The chamber exploded into violence. Marco drew his weapon. Guards returned fire. The Serpents had found them. Again. But this time they weren't alone. At least twelve armed attackers stormed the hidden chamber. "Protect the key!" Marco shouted. Bullets flew everywhere. Concrete shattered. People screamed. Luca shielded Aria with his body. The realization struck her again. He always protected her. Always. Even when it put him directly in danger. The thought hit her harder than any bullet. And before she could stop herself— She grabbed his jacket. Luca looked down. Their eyes met. For one brief second, the battle disappeared. The world disappeared. Without thinking. Without planning. Without understanding why. Aria kissed him. The contact lasted only a moment. A single heartbeat. Yet it felt powerful enough to stop time itself. Both froze. Neither expecting it. Then another bullet smashed into the wall beside them. Reality returned instantly. Luca's expression became something she'd never seen before. Shock. Real shock. But there was no time to process it. Because one of the attackers suddenly shouted— "I FOUND THE GIRL!" Every weapon in the room turned toward Aria. And Luca realized exactly what the enemy wanted. They weren't here for the key. They were here for her.
