Chapter 7: The Bloodline Secret

1039 Words
"The woman who raised you wasn't your biological mother." The words hit Aria like a physical blow. She stared at her father. Waiting for him to laugh. Waiting for him to say it was a joke. A misunderstanding. Anything. Instead, Victor Romano looked away. And that terrified her. "Dad..." Her voice trembled. "Tell me you're lying." He couldn't. The silence was answer enough. Aria took a step backward. Then another. The world around her seemed distant. Muted. Unreal. The burned remains of the mansion. The flashing emergency lights. The people moving around them. Everything blurred together. "What do you mean?" Her father slowly lowered himself onto a nearby stone bench. As if carrying a weight too heavy to bear. Luca remained silent. Watching. Waiting. He already knew the truth. Aria realized that immediately. The realization made her stomach twist. "You knew." Her gaze snapped toward him. Luca didn't deny it. "Yes." Anger surged through her. "You knew and didn't tell me?" His expression remained unreadable. "It wasn't my secret to tell." For once, she couldn't argue. Her attention returned to her father. "Dad." Victor rubbed his face. For several moments, he seemed unable to speak. Finally, he looked up. His eyes were filled with regret. "Your mother's name was Elena." Aria frowned. "Mom's name was Sophia." "No." The answer came quietly. "Sophia was the woman who raised you." Pain flashed across his face. "Elena was the woman who gave birth to you." The air left Aria's lungs. For twenty-two years, she had believed she knew who she was. Now everything was changing. Everything. "Why didn't you tell me?" Victor closed his eyes. "Because I promised." "Promised who?" "Elena." The name felt strange. Foreign. Yet somehow important. "What happened to her?" The question hung heavily in the air. Victor's jaw tightened. "She died." A sharp ache pierced Aria's chest. She had never met this woman. Never known her. Yet hearing about her death hurt anyway. "How?" Nobody answered. Aria immediately noticed. Fear crept into her stomach. "Dad." His hands shook. "She was murdered." Silence. Even the wind seemed to stop. Aria stared at him. Unable to process what she had heard. Murdered. Her biological mother had been murdered. The thought felt impossible. Horrifying. "Who killed her?" Victor's expression darkened. "The Serpents." The same name from earlier. The same symbol found in the ruins. The same people responsible for the attack. Suddenly everything connected. And yet nothing made sense. "Why?" Victor looked toward the burned mansion. His eyes distant. Lost in memories. "Because she betrayed them." Aria frowned. "Betrayed who?" "The family she was born into." The answer confused her. "What family?" This time, Luca spoke. "The Serpents aren't just a criminal organization." His voice was calm. Controlled. "They're one of the oldest criminal syndicates in the country." Aria blinked. "What?" Luca continued. "For decades they controlled entire cities." Victor nodded. "They were feared by everyone." A horrible feeling settled inside Aria. Because she already knew what came next. "No." Her father looked at her sadly. "Yes." "No." "Aria." "No." Tears filled her eyes. She didn't want to hear it. Didn't want it to be true. But her father said it anyway. "Your mother was born into the Serpent bloodline." The words shattered the last piece of her old life. For several seconds, she simply stared. Unable to move. Unable to think. Unable to breathe. Then she laughed. A small, broken laugh. Because the alternative was crying. "This is insane." Nobody disagreed. "You're telling me my biological mother belonged to some criminal empire?" "Yes." "And she was murdered?" "Yes." "And now those same people are hunting me?" Victor lowered his head. "Yes." Aria turned away. The truth felt too big. Too impossible. She needed time. Space. Anything. Instead, questions kept crashing into her mind. "Why now?" Victor looked confused. "What?" "Why are they coming after me now?" The question lingered. Even Luca seemed interested in the answer. Victor hesitated. That hesitation immediately caught Aria's attention. "Dad." He swallowed hard. "There is something else." Of course there was. There was always something else. "Tell me." His expression became haunted. "The night your mother died..." He paused. "...she left something behind." Aria's pulse quickened. "What?" "A key." The word sounded ridiculous. "A key?" Victor nodded. "The Serpents spent years searching for it." Luca's eyes narrowed. This was new information. Even to him. Victor noticed. "I never told anyone." "You should have," Luca said coldly. "I know." "What does the key open?" Aria asked. Victor laughed bitterly. "I don't know." That surprised everyone. "What?" "I swear." He looked exhausted. "Elena never told me." Aria frowned. "Then why do they want it?" Victor's face darkened. "Because whatever it unlocks is worth killing for." Silence followed. A dangerous silence. The kind that comes before disaster. Then suddenly— A loud explosion echoed nearby. Everyone spun around. One of the remaining walls of the mansion collapsed. Smoke and debris erupted into the air. Guards immediately moved into position. Weapons drawn. Luca stepped in front of Aria instinctively. Shielding her. The action happened so naturally that neither of them seemed to notice. Until Aria did. For one strange moment, she felt safe. Then a guard shouted. "Boss!" Everyone looked up. The man was running toward them. Fast. Panicked. Luca's expression hardened. "What is it?" The guard stopped. Breathing heavily. "We found a message." Fear immediately flashed across Victor's face. The guard handed over a small envelope. Black. Elegant. Deadly. Luca opened it. His eyes scanned the contents. For the first time since Aria met him— His expression changed. Not anger. Not annoyance. Something far worse. Concern. Real concern. "What does it say?" Aria asked. Luca didn't answer. "Tell me." Slowly, he handed her the note. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it. A single sentence was written inside. The daughter returns what belongs to us... or the father dies next. Aria's blood ran cold. At the bottom of the note sat a familiar symbol. A black serpent. Watching. Waiting. Hunting. And for the first time, Aria truly understood. This wasn't about a debt. This wasn't about marriage. This wasn't even about her mother. She had become the center of a war. And that war had just begun.
