The safe house in the Swiss Alps felt different now.
Michael stood at the window, staring out at the snow-covered peaks. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the valley. The view was beautiful. Peaceful. But Michael felt anything but peaceful.
Three days had passed since the London operation. Three days since Regan had slipped through his fingers. Three days of searching, of analyzing, of trying to find any trace of where she'd gone.
She'd vanished. Completely. No communications. No financial transactions. No sightings. It was as if she'd ceased to exist.
But Michael knew better. She was out there. Waiting. Planning. And when she struck again, she'd be more dangerous than ever.
The door opened behind him. Clarice entered, a cup of coffee in her hand. She crossed the room and handed it to him.
"Drink," she said. "You've been standing there for hours."
Michael took the coffee but didn't drink it. "I can't find her. I've looked everywhere. Every channel. Every contact. She's gone."
"She's hiding. She knows we're looking for her. She's going to wait until we stop looking."
"That's not going to happen."
"I know. But you need to rest. You're no good to anyone if you collapse from exhaustion."
Michael finally turned away from the window. Clarice was right. He was exhausted. His body was aching, his mind was foggy. But he couldn't stop. Not now. Not when they were so close.
"How are the others?" he asked.
"Freddy's working on the financial angle. He's been tracking the Foundation's money flows. Victor's been analyzing the communications logs. Lilian's been working on the biological weapon data."
"Any leads?"
"Nothing solid. But Victor found something interesting. A pattern in the communications. There's a location that keeps coming up. Somewhere in Eastern Europe."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "Where?"
"A small town in Romania. It's been appearing in encrypted messages for months. Victor thinks it might be a meeting point. A place where the Foundation's leadership gathers."
"Then we need to check it out."
"I knew you'd say that." Clarice pulled out her phone and pulled up a map. "The town is called Sighișoara. It's a medieval village in the Transylvania region. Not a lot of activity. Perfect for a secret meeting."
Michael studied the map. "Do we know anything about the location?"
"Not yet. But Victor's working on it. He thinks he might be able to identify the building from the pattern of the messages."
"How long will that take?"
"Another day. Maybe two."
Michael nodded slowly. "Good. We wait. We gather intelligence. And then we strike."
---
The next two days were a blur of activity.
Victor worked tirelessly, analyzing the communications logs. He'd identified a pattern in the messages—a specific frequency, a specific encryption method, a specific time of day. The messages were being sent from a location in Sighișoara, and they were being received by someone in the Foundation's leadership.
"It's a meeting point," Victor said, presenting his findings to the team. "The messages are coordinating a gathering. I think the Foundation's inner circle is planning to meet in person."
"When?" Michael asked.
"Soon. The messages indicate a date. Three weeks from now."
"Then we have three weeks to prepare."
Norman stepped forward. "I've been analyzing the location data. The messages are being sent from a specific building in Sighișoara. It's a large villa on the outskirts of town. Owned by a shell company with ties to the Foundation."
Michael studied the building's layout on the screen. "How many people are we talking about?"
"The entire inner circle. At least a dozen people. Plus security. Probably a lot of security."
"Then we need to plan carefully. We can't afford another failure."
Freddy looked up from his laptop. "I've been thinking about that. The villa is isolated. There's only one road leading to it. If we can control the road, we can trap them inside."
"And then what?" Clarice asked. "We can't exactly storm the place with a handful of people."
"Then we bring more people." Michael turned to the team. "We've been building a network. People who want to fight the Foundation. It's time to call them in."
The room fell silent. Everyone was looking at Michael, waiting for his next words.
"We're going to need a lot of people for this," he said. "And we're going to need a plan. A real plan. No more improvisation."
---
The next week was spent preparing.
Michael contacted every ally they'd made. Former Foundation operatives. Journalists. Whistleblowers. Intelligence contacts. He built a network of dozens of people, all willing to fight the Foundation.
Clarice worked on logistics. Transportation. Communications. Supplies. She coordinated with contacts across Europe, ensuring everything was in place.
Freddy worked on weapons and equipment. He'd acquired a small arsenal through his contacts in the criminal underworld. Rifles. Explosives. Body armor. Everything they'd need for the assault.
Victor and Lilian worked on the villa's layout. They'd acquired blueprints from a contact in the Romanian government. The building was large, with multiple entrances and exits. It was going to be a challenge.
Norman worked on the communications aspect. He'd set up encrypted channels for the team, ensuring their communications couldn't be intercepted.
"Three weeks," Michael said, during a final briefing. "That's how long we have. We hit them hard. We hit them fast. And we don't stop until we have them all."
---
The night before the operation, Michael couldn't sleep.
He stood at the window, staring out at the darkness. The mountains were silent, the snow falling softly. It was peaceful. Too peaceful.
He knew the feeling wouldn't last. Tomorrow, they'd be in the middle of a war zone. People would die. Friends would fall. And the world would never be the same.
The door opened behind him. Clarice entered, wrapped in a blanket.
"Couldn't sleep either?" she asked.
"No. Too much on my mind."
"Me too." She walked to the window and stood beside him. "I've been thinking about my parents. About what they would think if they could see me now."
Michael was silent for a moment. Then he said, "They'd be proud of you. You're fighting for something. Something bigger than yourself."
"I'm fighting for revenge. For what they did to me. For what they did to you."
"Revenge is a good motivator. But it's not the only one."
"What else is there?"
"Purpose. The knowledge that you're making a difference. That you're stopping something terrible from happening."
Clarice was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.
"You're right," she said. "I'm fighting for something bigger than myself. I'm fighting for the future."
"Then let's make sure we win."
---
The operation began at 0300 hours.
The team assembled in a warehouse outside Sighișoara. Dozens of people, armed and ready. Michael stood at the front of the room, addressing them.
"This is it," he said. "This is what we've been fighting for. The Foundation's leadership is in that villa. We capture them, and we dismantle the organization from the top."
He went over the plan one final time. The road leading to the villa would be blocked. The perimeter would be secured. The assault teams would move in simultaneously, taking out the guards and securing the building.
"Any questions?" Michael asked.
Silence.
"Then let's move."
---
The drive to the villa took forty-five minutes.
Michael sat in the front vehicle, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. The convoy moved through the darkness, the headlights cutting through the fog. The snow had stopped, leaving the ground white and silent.
The villa appeared ahead. Large, imposing, surrounded by high walls. Michael could see guards at the gates, their weapons visible in the moonlight.
"Go," he said.
The convoy surged forward. The guards at the gates raised their weapons, but they were too late. The first vehicle crashed through the gates, sending them flying. The team poured out, weapons blazing.
The fight was brutal, chaotic. The Foundation's guards were well-trained, but they were outnumbered. Michael moved through the chaos, his weapon barking, his senses alert.
He reached the main entrance and kicked the door open. Inside, the villa was a maze of corridors and rooms. Michael moved quickly, his team following close behind.
They reached the main hall. The Foundation's leadership was gathered there, their faces pale, their hands raised.
"Don't shoot," one of them said. "We surrender."
Michael stepped forward. "Where's Regan?"
"She's not here. She's never here."
Michael's heart sank. Regan had escaped again.
"Secure them," he said. "Take them to the safe house. And search the villa. She might be hiding."
The team moved, securing the Foundation's leadership. Michael stood in the center of the hall, his mind racing.
She'd escaped. Again.
But he wasn't done. Not yet.
---
The debriefing took hours.
The Foundation's leaders were questioned extensively. They provided a wealth of information—names, locations, plans. Michael learned more about the Foundation's operations than he'd ever known before.
But there was still no sign of Regan. She'd vanished completely.
"I don't understand," Michael said, pacing the room. "She was supposed to be here. This was her meeting. Her plan. Why would she miss it?"
"Maybe she knew we were coming," Clarice said. "Maybe she was warned."
"That's not possible. The operation was kept secret."
"Was it? We've been recruiting people for weeks. Anyone could have tipped her off."
Michael stopped pacing. She was right. They'd brought a lot of people into the network. People they didn't fully trust.
"Find the leak," he said. "I want to know who warned her."
---
The search took three days.
Norman led the investigation, analyzing communications logs and interviews. He'd identified a pattern—a specific contact who'd been communicating with someone outside the network.
"I've found him," Norman said, presenting his findings. "A man named Richie. He's been working for the Foundation for years. He infiltrated our network through a contact in Vienna."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "Richie. Regan's enforcer."
"The same. He's been feeding her information for weeks. Everything we did, she knew about."
"Where is he now?"
"Gone. He disappeared after the operation. But I've tracked him to a location in Turkey. He's hiding there."
Michael nodded slowly. "Then we go to Turkey. We find him. And we find Regan."
---
The flight to Turkey took four hours.
Michael sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused on the mission ahead. Richie was the key. He knew where Regan was. He knew her plans. If they could capture him, they could finally end this.
Clarice was beside him, reviewing the intelligence on Richie's location. "He's in a small town on the coast. Izmir. He's been hiding in a hotel there."
"We need to move fast. He'll know we're coming."
"We have a team on the ground. They're waiting for us."
Michael nodded. "Then let's do this."
---
The operation was swift and brutal.
The team surrounded the hotel. Michael led the assault, moving through the corridors with his weapon drawn. They found Richie in a room on the top floor, his face pale, his hands raised.
"Don't kill me," he said. "I'll tell you everything."
"Where's Regan?" Michael demanded.
"I don't know. She doesn't tell me where she's going. I just follow orders."
"Then why did you betray us?"
Richie hesitated. "She threatened my family. My children. I had no choice."
Michael stared at him for a long moment. He could see the fear in the man's eyes. He was telling the truth.
"Where do you think she went?" Michael asked.
Richie thought for a moment. "There's a place. A secret facility in the Middle East. She mentioned it once. It's where the Foundation's top leaders go when they need to hide."
"Where is it?"
"I don't know exactly. But I know someone who does."
"Who?"
"A man named Chucky. He's a former Foundation operative. He's been in hiding for years. He might be willing to help."
Michael nodded slowly. "Then we find him."
