Harriet went back home with the dress and some of the clothes Sylvia bought for her. She was having a wonderful day even with the little glitches here and there.
She received a call on her private phone concerning her work which no one knew anything about.
Harriet picked up the call when she was sure no one was around.
“Yes, please let’s seal that deal on time so we can make progress with it. I am not pleased that we have to lag behind because of a decision made by the account manager” she said to the person on the phone.
Pacing around the room as she listens to the person’s response.
“Fine, but don’t reveal it yet. I don’t want the media attention now. It’s not necessary at the moment” she lowered her voice when she thought she heard someone come by. “Conclude with the manager and send me your decisions. I have to go” she didn’t wait for a response and disconnected the call.
Harriet made sure to hide the wedding dress well so Arthur doesn’t see it. She took in deep breaths and walked out of the room to prepare dinner for them.
She was hoping for them to start this relationship afresh and just build something since they will be together for a long time.
“I just hope this deal gets sorted and I can finally tell Arthur what I have been keeping from everyone” she muttered to herself and went to the kitchen. “Please, you all should take the evening off. I’ll prepare something for me and my fiancé” she told the maids.
They excused her and she smiled when his favorite food came to her mind.
Arthur is a horrible person to her but she didn’t know how she was able to fall in love with him. Maybe it was before he started acting all bossy and harsh to her before their arranged marriage or when she had been in love with him from afar.
“I want this to work, help me Lord” she sighed and started preparing to cook.
It was already late at night by the time she was done with the chicken Perri, baked potato mash and rice soup for their dinner.
She put the food in the dishing plates and placed them on the dining table, smiling proudly at what she has done so far.
“I hope he likes this” she took her phone out to snap her creation then pockets her phone to juice the oranges.
Arthur walked in through the door just as she was bringing the juice and glasses to the dining.
She smiled when their eyes met but he grunted and looked away from her before heading to the room they shared. Harriet’s smile dropped and she let out a sigh then served the food for him while waiting for him to come downstairs to eat.
Thirty minutes had passed but he didn’t come downstairs, so she covered the food and went to get him.
He pulled her into the room when she opened the door and slammed the door behind her.
“What’s that?” he points to the wedding dress on the bed.
Harriet’s eyes widened, so she moved to grab it but his firm hold on her wrist prevented her from moving further.
“That’s my wedding dress and you shouldn’t see it till our day” she frowned when he burst out laughing.
His hold on her wrist loosened and she rubbed them.
“You are so delusional” the smile was out of his face in a flash and replaced with his usual cold looks. “What made you think you could wear such cheap clothing to the wedding? Do you always have plans to disgrace me?” he raised his voice at her.
Harriet was vexed by his tone and how he chose to address her.
“I will not appreciate you insulting me just because you can. It’s not nice and your sister got the dress for me. It’s not cheap” she muttered the last part with a frown and pout.
He laughed sarcastically. “Good, now I am assured you leech from me to be called a person” he eyes her with disdain.
“Why are you treating me like this Arthur? What have I ever done to you? Why do you take pleasure in making me feel so unworthy?”
“Because you are unworthy” he yells in her face. This caused her to flinch and tears welled up in her eyes. “You are unworthy of my stare, my attention and my surname. You’re a nobody and a wealthy man in my status shouldn’t be seen with a riff-raff like you, but I don’t have a choice. I am stuck with you” he complained.
Arthur walked away from her to his bedside dresser then grabbed a hold of the scissors laying there.
“I was already going to engage Stephanie when you came to ruin things for me. My life hasn’t been the same since you came and I regret ever meeting you”
As he spoke, the words sliced through Harriet's heart, shattering them in pieces and she let the tears cloud her vision as they rolled down her cheeks.
“You mean nothing to me and I cannot bear to have the woman I will spend my life with to be a nobody like you. I take pride in my woman and I can’t do the same for you. There is no need to continue with the wedding again. I don’t care about the consequences anymore” he took the dress and started cutting them.
Harriet charged towards him screaming “No” as she tried to prevent him from destroying the dress she grew to love.
He pushed her harshly and she fell on the floor, wailing like she lost someone and vibrating with so much hurt and pent-up anger.
Her eyes rose to look into Arthur’s cold ones. He dumped the destroyed dress on her head and kicked her leg to the side so he could leave the room. Already disgusted by her presence.
“The wedding is off. I want you out of my house by the time I am back” he paused to say then walked out of the room.
Harriet couldn’t find any strength to say anything or pick up what’s left of the dress on the floor. She was too weak to do or act upon anything.
“I don’t deserve this,” she whispered to herself.
She looked around the cold room and sniffled. She cleaned her eyes and blew her nose with the dress. Weakly she stood to her feet and packed all the dress in a plastic bag, each tear that slipped from her eyes showed her pain and anger.
She was mad at his behavior towards her. She was angry that he could do whatever he liked just because he can. She was furious at his arrogance and wanted to break his wings so badly.
Harriet is aware how shocked everyone would be when they come to know but she wanted to be accepted whether or not she had anything. Arthur proved to be a pain in her butt since their engagement last month and has not ceased to remind her how worthless she is.
She is determined to show him he can’t treat people the way he feels like. She was going to show him who the real boss is.
Packing what’s left of her luggage, she walked out of the room and down the stairs. She noticed how disorganized the food she spent hours making was on the dining table.
“How much do you hate me, Arthur?” she whisper-asked herself.
Cleaning the fresh tears that fell, she helped herself out of the house and out of his life for good.
