I sat frozen, my face burning with embarrassment as the weight of the classroom's collective attention bore down on me. Zeus Matthews, the mysterious newcomer, slowly walked toward the empty seat beside me. Each step echoed in the silence, and I swore the air around him seemed to hum with an otherworldly energy.
"Mind if I sit?" His deep voice sent a shiver down my spine. I managed a nod, avoiding his piercing gaze.
Edward and Karl exchanged knowing glances, their smirks indicating they'd be teasing me later. As Zeus settled into the seat, I could feel the heat radiating from him, though the classroom was unusually cold. Something about him was unnervingly magnetic, and I hated how my pulse quickened whenever he moved.
The rest of the lecture passed in a haze. Mr. Adam's voice became background noise as I hyper-focused on not looking at Zeus. But every so often, I caught him glancing at me from the corner of my eye.
When the class ended, I quickly gathered my things, ready to bolt. Before I could escape, Zeus turned to me, his face unreadable.
"Rosie, right?"
I nodded, clutching my books like a shield.
"Thanks for helping me catch up. Where do we start?" His tone was polite, but there was something unnervingly intense about his gaze, as if he could see through me.
"Uh...the library?" I suggested, trying to sound confident.
"Perfect," he replied, his lips curling into a slight smirk that made my heart skip a beat.
The Library Encounter
The walk to the library was silent. Zeus didn’t seem the type to make small talk, and I was too flustered to start a conversation. When we arrived, I led him to the back corner where it was quieter.
As we sat down, I pulled out my notes and started explaining the material. To my surprise, Zeus listened intently, his focus unwavering.
"You’re quite thorough," he remarked after a while, his voice softer than before.
"Uh, thanks," I mumbled, keeping my eyes on my notes.
"Why do you hide?" he asked suddenly, his words catching me off guard.
"What do you mean?"
"Behind the baggy clothes, the glasses, the messy bun," he clarified, his gaze piercing. "You’re hiding something."
I stiffened. "That’s none of your business."
He leaned back, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Fair enough."
The rest of the session passed without incident, but his words lingered in my mind.
The Night Shift
Later that night, as I walked home, the snowy streets were eerily quiet. The air felt heavy, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched.
Turning a corner, I froze. A pair of glowing red eyes stared back at me from the shadows. My breath hitched, and I took a step back.
The creature emerged, its form shifting between a wolf and something unrecognizable. My legs refused to move as it prowled closer, its low growl sending chills down my spine.
Suddenly, a blur of motion darted in front of me. Zeus.
He stood between me and the creature, his eyes glowing faintly in the darkness. Without hesitation, he lunged at the beast, his movements impossibly fast. The two clashed, the sound of snarls and growls filling the air.
I stumbled backward, my mind struggling to comprehend what was happening. Zeus wasn’t just strong—he was inhumanly powerful.
The creature finally retreated, vanishing into the shadows. Zeus turned to me, his expression unreadable.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice calm despite the chaos.
"What...what was that?" I stammered.
He hesitated. "You wouldn’t believe me if I told you."
"Try me," I whispered, still trembling.
Zeus sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Let’s just say the world is a lot darker than you think."
A World Beyond
Over the next few days, I couldn’t get the incident out of my mind. Zeus seemed unfazed, but I noticed how he always kept an eye on me, as if expecting another attack.
One evening, I confronted him.
"You owe me an explanation," I demanded.
He regarded me with a mix of amusement and caution. "You’re persistent, aren’t you?"
"That thing wasn’t normal, and neither are you," I pressed.
He finally relented. "Fine. But once I tell you, there’s no going back."
I nodded, my curiosity outweighing my fear.
Zeus began to explain, his voice low and serious. He spoke of a hidden world where demons, angels, vampires, and werewolves existed alongside humans. He admitted to being a guardian of sorts, tasked with protecting the balance between these realms.
"And what about me?" I asked. "Why was that thing after me?"
"I don’t know yet," he admitted. "But there’s something...different about you."
His words unsettled me. What could possibly make me a target in this supernatural war?
The Bond
As the days turned into weeks, Zeus and I spent more time together. Despite his aloof demeanor, I found myself drawn to him. He was a puzzle I couldn’t resist trying to solve.
One night, while we were studying, he surprised me by opening up.
"I wasn’t always like this," he confessed. "There was a time when I was just a regular guy."
"What happened?" I asked softly.
He hesitated, then said, "I lost someone important to me. It changed everything."
There was a vulnerability in his voice that tugged at my heart. Without thinking, I reached out and placed a hand on his.
"You’re not alone," I said.
For a moment, he looked at me as if I were the most extraordinary thing he’d ever seen.
A Dark Promise
As our connection deepened, so did the danger. More creatures began appearing, each encounter more harrowing than the last.
One night, after a particularly close call, Zeus made a vow.
"I’ll protect you, no matter what," he said, his voice firm.
His words sent a warmth through me, but they also filled me with dread. Whatever was coming, I knew it would test us both.
