Chapter 5: The Sunken Ruins

760 Words
The Iron Vulture lurched violently as another explosion tore through its hull. Smoke and fire filled the air, and the shouts of panicked pirates echoed across the deck. Callum Vex barely managed to stay on his feet as he grabbed hold of a wooden railing. His eyes darted toward the approaching airships, their dark sails emblazoned with The Veil’s sigil. The secretive order had found them—and they weren’t here for negotiation. Varik Storme, the sky pirate captain, cursed under his breath. “You brought them here, Vex?” “Not intentionally!” Callum shouted over the chaos. Lyra drew her dagger, scanning the deck. “We need to move—now!” Varik clenched his jaw. “We’re sitting ducks up here. My ship’s damaged, and those bastards will tear us apart.” Callum’s gaze flicked to the shattered compass fragment still in Varik’s grasp. They had come for it. “We take the fight to them,” Callum said. “Or we get the hell out of here.” Varik scoffed. “And where exactly do you propose we go?” Callum reached into his coat and pulled out his own compass fragment, feeling the strange warmth pulsing from it. “We go where this tells us,” he said. Varik frowned. “And where’s that?” Callum turned the fragment in his hands. The runes along its surface shifted, glowing faintly. A thin golden line flickered across the broken glass—pointing east. A memory surfaced—something Aldric, the old mapmaker, had said: “The compass doesn’t point north. It points to what’s been lost.” Callum exhaled. “The ruins.” Lyra’s eyes narrowed. “You think the next piece is there?” “It’s the best lead we have,” Callum said. “And unless you have a better idea—” Another explosion sent wooden debris flying through the air. Pirates scattered as the Veil’s airships began boarding maneuvers. Varik growled. “Fine. But if we’re going down, we’re taking some of them with us.” He barked orders to his crew, and within moments, the ship’s damaged engines roared to life, sending the Iron Vulture hurtling eastward. Behind them, The Veil’s ships gave chase. The Journey Below Hours passed before they reached the eastern sea, where dark waters stretched endlessly toward the horizon. The storm clouds had cleared, revealing a strange, unnatural stillness in the air. Callum stood at the ship’s bow, watching as the compass fragments continued pointing downward—toward the ocean itself. “This is where it leads,” Lyra muttered. Varik scowled. “You’re telling me the next piece is underwater?” Callum nodded. “That’s what it looks like.” The pirate captain cursed. “You better be right about this, Vex.” A small crew was assembled—Callum, Lyra, and two of Varik’s most trusted men. They boarded a smaller skiff, outfitted with diving equipment and enchanted lanterns, then descended toward the ocean’s surface. As they hit the water, Callum couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling creeping up his spine. The sea was too still. No waves. No wind. Like the ocean itself was holding its breath. Then, as if in response to his thoughts, the water shifted. Something massive stirred below. Lyra tightened her grip on the boat’s edge. “I don’t like this.” Callum forced a grin. “If it was easy, it wouldn’t be valuable.” “Or it’s not meant to be found,” Lyra countered. Callum ignored her and gestured for the others to prepare the descent lines. Moments later, they plunged into the depths. The Ruins of Azura The ocean swallowed them whole. The deeper they went, the darker it became, until the enchanted lanterns were their only source of light. Ancient structures—stone pillars and archways covered in strange symbols—loomed in the shadows. Callum’s breath caught. “The lost city of Azura…” He had heard stories—an ancient civilization that vanished overnight, leaving behind only ruins beneath the sea. And at the heart of it, half-buried in coral and sand, was a massive stone pedestal… and upon it, another shattered compass fragment. Callum motioned to the others and kicked forward. Then the ocean moved. A deep, rumbling sound vibrated through the water—something ancient stirring in the darkness. Callum turned. And saw the eyes. Massive. Glowing. Watching. From the ruins, something began to rise. A guardian. A monster of the deep, awakened after centuries of slumber. And it was not pleased.
