Chapter 14The next morning Leah's father wasn't at the breakfast table as customary. Leah quarried Cheyenne, Nisei's daughter, who'd taken over much of the cooking, about her father's whereabouts. Cheyenne took her time answering as she was taking hot buttermilk biscuits out of the oven. Leah waited as she completed her task and brought the fresh strawberry jam to the table. Thinking she had forgotten her question, Leah asked, “Has my father breakfasted this morning?” “Yes, Ma'am,” said Cheyenne. “Did he say where he was going?” Leah asked. “Yes, Ma'am,” said Cheyenne. “To the docks for a spell,” he said. “Thank you, Cheyenne; it's not like him to leave so early,” she said.
