Chapter 18Leah's son, Joshua, shot up in height like a well-watered plant. He often traveled with his grandpa, Leah's father, on expeditions scouting for new land. It was Nisei who convinced Leah this was the right thing to do. Otherwise, Leah would've been tempted to tie him to her skirt tails, or so Nisei thought. Nisei didn't say much. But, one day she had enough of Leah's coddling of Joshua and spoke up. “Leah, you've got to let'em become a man,” she said. “I know,” Leah said. “But, that doesn't make it any easier.” “You're hurting him by hold'em back,” Nisei said. “I'm afraid,” Leah said. “What will be – will be, nothing we can do except pray,” said Nisei. “I'll try,” Leah said. And, she did. It seemed Nisei was the only one who understood her frustrations with the townspeople.
