The Truth in His Eyes

Chapter 11: The rain had finally stopped. Morning sunlight poured through the windows of Aria's apartment, painting the small living room in shades of gold. Normally, mornings were her favorite time of day. She and Leo would eat breakfast together before starting their busy schedules. Today was different. She couldn't stop thinking about Damon. Seeing him again had reopened wounds she believed had healed years ago. She placed a cup of tea on the table and took a deep breath. "You have to move forward," she whispered to herself. Just then, tiny footsteps echoed down the hallway. Leo walked into the kitchen, rubbing his sleepy eyes. "Good morning, Mama." Aria smiled warmly. "Good morning, sweetheart." He climbed onto his chair and looked at the pancakes waiting for him. "They smell yummy." "They're your favorite." Leo grinned before happily beginning his breakfast. For a few minutes, everything felt normal. Then he suddenly looked up. "Mama?" "Yes?" "The black wolf..." Aria froze. "...is he my friend?" She nearly dropped her teacup. "What makes you ask that?" Leo shrugged. "He doesn't feel scary anymore." Aria forced a smile, though her heart was racing. "Dreams aren't always real, Leo." "But he looked at me yesterday." Her breathing caught. He was talking about Damon. The moment at the apartment window. "He smiled." Aria gently reached across the table and held his little hand. "Sometimes it's better not to talk to strangers." Leo nodded obediently, though he didn't seem convinced. "Okay." She silently prayed that would be the end of it. She was wrong. --- At the Moonfang guest house in Silverhaven, Damon stood by the window, staring at the city below. Sleep had escaped him once again. Every time he thought about Aria, another memory surfaced. Her laugh. Her determination. The way she used to believe in him even when he doubted himself. He sighed heavily. A knock interrupted his thoughts. Ethan entered carrying another file. "Our investigator returned." Damon turned immediately. "Did he find anything?" Ethan handed him the folder. "Only public information." Damon flipped through the papers. School records. Medical insurance. Apartment lease. Nothing unusual. Then he reached a photo. It showed Aria leaving Leo's preschool with the little boy holding her hand. Damon stared at it. The child looked up at Aria with complete trust. A smile slowly spread across Damon's face despite himself. "He really loves her." Ethan nodded. "She seems like a wonderful mother." Damon looked at the boy again. There it was. The same determined expression Damon had seen in the mirror countless times. The same stubborn tilt of the chin. Even the shape of his eyebrows looked familiar. His chest tightened. "Am I imagining it?" Ethan studied the photograph. "No." "He looks..." "...like you," Ethan finished quietly. Silence filled the room. Neither man wanted to say the words aloud. Because once spoken, they could never be taken back. --- That afternoon, Aria finished examining her final patient. As she left the consultation room, Dr. Hayes approached her. "I have good news." Aria smiled. "I could use some." "The Children's Medical Foundation accepted your proposal." Her eyes widened. "They did?" "They're funding the free clinic." For a moment, Aria couldn't believe what she had heard. The dream she had worked toward for years was finally becoming reality. She hugged Dr. Hayes before realizing what she had done. "I'm sorry." He laughed. "No apology needed." The surrounding nurses clapped happily. Aria smiled through tears. For the first time since leaving Moonfang, she felt that everything she had endured had led her to this moment. She had built a life with her own hands. No Alpha. No title. No mate. Just hard work. --- Across town, Leo sat outside his classroom drawing. This time, instead of wolves, he drew three people holding hands. His teacher knelt beside him. "Who are they?" Leo pointed to the tallest figure. "That's Mama." "And this one?" "That's me." The teacher smiled. "What about the third person?" Leo looked thoughtfully at his drawing. "I don't know." "You don't?" He shook his head. "I've never met him." The teacher frowned gently. "Then why did you draw him?" Leo smiled innocently. "Because I think he's looking for us." The teacher didn't know how to respond. She simply smiled and praised the drawing. But Leo's words lingered in her mind. --- That evening, Damon stood outside the preschool from a distance. Children ran happily toward waiting parents. Laughter filled the air. Then he saw him. Leo. The little boy came running out with a backpack bouncing behind him. Aria bent down and opened her arms. Leo ran straight into them. Damon couldn't help smiling. The sight warmed something deep inside him. Then Leo suddenly turned. His bright silver-blue eyes met Damon's across the street. The little boy smiled... ...and waved. This time, Damon didn't hesitate. He waved back. Aria noticed the exchange. Her smile disappeared instantly. She looked directly at Damon. Her expression wasn't angry. It was worried. Very worried. She quickly took Leo's hand and hurried away. Damon watched them leave. His smile slowly faded. Something wasn't right. Aria wasn't simply avoiding him anymore. She was protecting something. Or... Someone. And Damon had never been the kind of man who ignored unanswered questions. The walk home was unusually quiet. Leo skipped happily beside Aria, humming a song he had learned at preschool. Aria, however, was lost in thought. She had seen Damon wave at Leo. And Leo had waved back. It seemed harmless. But to her, it felt like the beginning of something she had spent years trying to prevent. When they reached their apartment, Leo ran inside while Aria locked the door behind them. She leaned against it for a moment and closed her eyes. "Please," she whispered to herself. "Don't let him find out." She wasn't afraid Damon would reject Leo. She knew the kind of man Damon was. If he learned the truth, he would never walk away from his own child. That was exactly what frightened her. If Damon claimed Leo, the Alpha Council would soon know about him. And powerful wolves would begin asking dangerous questions. She couldn't allow that to happen. Not until she understood why strangers had started watching them. --- At the hotel, Damon sat alone in his room. The photograph of Aria and Leo rested on the table. He picked it up again. The little boy's smile reminded him of someone. Himself. When Damon had been a child, his mother often told him he smiled exactly the same way whenever he was happy. He had dismissed the resemblance as coincidence. Now... He wasn't so sure. A knock sounded at the door. "Come in." Ethan entered carrying another report. "Our investigator has been watching the apartment." Damon frowned. "I told him not to get too close." "He didn't." Ethan placed the file on the desk. "But he noticed something." Damon opened it immediately. "What?" "Aria has never been seen with a husband." His eyes narrowed. "No wedding ring?" "None." "No boyfriend?" "None that anyone knows of." Damon leaned back in his chair. "So she's raising Leo alone." Ethan nodded. "It appears that way." Silence settled between them. Then Damon quietly asked, "Did anyone ever mention Leo's father?" Ethan shook his head. "Never." Damon stared out the window. The mystery only deepened. If Aria had moved on... Why had no one ever seen the man? And if she hadn't... Who was Leo's father? --- That evening, Leo sat on the living room floor building a castle from wooden blocks. Aria watched him from the kitchen. "You've become very good at that." Leo grinned proudly. "I'm making a kingdom." "A kingdom?" He nodded. "For a king." "And who is the king?" Leo thought for a moment. "I don't know yet." Aria smiled. Children had wonderful imaginations. Suddenly, Leo looked toward the window. His cheerful expression disappeared. "Mama." "What is it?" "The birds are back." Aria walked over and looked outside. Nothing. Just trees swaying gently in the evening breeze. "I don't see anything." "They're warning us." A chill ran through her. "Warning us about what?" Leo's small face became unusually serious. "They said a storm is coming." Aria looked toward the clear sky. There wasn't a single cloud. She knelt beside him. "The weather looks fine." Leo slowly shook his head. "Not that kind of storm." --- Across the city, inside an abandoned warehouse, the hooded figure stood before a large map. Several photographs were pinned to it. Aria. Damon. Leo. The figure picked up Leo's photograph. "So..." A faint smile appeared beneath the hood. "The heir has begun awakening." Another man entered the room. "Our scouts have confirmed Damon Blackwood is in Silverhaven." "I expected as much." "Should we eliminate him now?" The hooded figure laughed softly. "No." The answer surprised the man. "If Damon dies now, Aria will flee with the child." He carefully returned the photograph to the board. "I want all three of them exactly where they are." "And afterward?" The silver-eyed figure's smile became cold. "When the time is right..." "...we'll take the boy." --- The next morning, Aria was preparing breakfast when her phone rang. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number. She hesitated before answering. "Hello?" "Doctor Nightshade?" "Speaking." "This is the Silverhaven Children's Foundation." Her expression brightened. "We're calling to inform you that your free clinic project has officially been approved." Aria covered her mouth. "Really?" "Construction begins next month." Tears filled her eyes. Years of hard work. Years of sacrifice. Her dream was finally becoming reality. After ending the call, she hugged Leo tightly. "We did it!" Leo laughed. "Does that mean we'll celebrate?" She smiled. "Yes." "Ice cream?" She laughed again. "Yes, ice cream." Neither of them noticed the black SUV parked across the street. Inside, the mysterious observer lowered his camera. He picked up his phone. "The woman is leaving with the child." The hooded figure answered immediately. "Do not interfere." "Understood." "But don't lose sight of them." The observer started the engine. "As you wish." --- Later that afternoon, Damon walked through a nearby park, trying to clear his mind. Children laughed as they played. Families enjoyed the warm weather. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a familiar little boy chasing pigeons across the grass. Leo. Not far behind him walked Aria, smiling as she watched her son play. Without realizing it, Damon stopped walking. His gaze remained fixed on them. At that exact moment, Leo turned around. Their eyes met again. This time, instead of waving... Leo smiled and called out loudly enough for the quiet park to carry his voice. "Mr. Wolf!" Aria's heart nearly stopped. She turned toward Damon in shock. And Damon stood frozen in place.
