The Rejection

Chapter 2: The Moon Ascension Ceremony continued beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers of the Moonfang Pack Hall. Laughter, music, and excitement filled the air as hundreds of pack members eagerly awaited the most important announcement of the year. Aria Nightshade stood quietly among them, her heart pounding. Tonight, Alpha Damon Blackwood would officially name his Luna. Every member of the pack already knew who it would be. Aria. She and Damon had been inseparable since childhood. Their wolves had recognized each other years ago, and many believed their union was destined by the Moon Goddess herself. Even Aria believed it. Her silver eyes searched the crowd until they found Damon standing on the raised platform. Dressed in a black ceremonial suit embroidered with silver threads, he looked every bit the powerful Alpha he had become. For a brief moment, their eyes met. Aria's heart skipped. Then Damon looked away. A strange feeling settled in her stomach. Before she could think further, Beta Ethan stepped forward and raised his hand. "Silence!" The hall immediately became quiet. "The Alpha wishes to make an important announcement." Excitement erupted throughout the crowd. Aria swallowed nervously. This was it. Damon stepped forward. His expression was unreadable. "Tonight," he began, his deep voice echoing throughout the hall, "I will announce the woman who will stand beside me as Luna of the Moonfang Pack." Cheers exploded around the room. Aria felt her cheeks warm. Everything she had dreamed of was finally coming true. Or so she thought. Damon's gaze swept across the crowd before stopping on someone standing near the front. A beautiful blonde woman wearing an elegant gold dress. Selene Ravenscar. The Alpha Princess. Aria's smile faltered. Why was Damon looking at Selene? A cold chill crept down her spine. Then Damon spoke words that shattered her entire world. "My chosen Luna is Selene Ravenscar." The hall fell silent. For one horrifying second, Aria thought she had heard wrong. Then the crowd erupted into shocked whispers. "What?" "Did he just say Selene?" "What about Aria?" "No way..." Aria's entire body froze. The smile disappeared from her face. Her ears rang. Her chest tightened painfully. She stared at Damon, waiting for him to laugh and reveal it was some cruel joke. But he didn't. Instead, he walked toward Selene and held out his hand. The blonde princess accepted it with a triumphant smile. The sight felt like a knife piercing Aria's heart. "Congratulations, Alpha!" "Congratulations, Luna Selene!" The crowd slowly began applauding. Some looked confused. Others looked sympathetic. Many looked embarrassed on Aria's behalf. She could feel every eye in the room turning toward her. Pity. Curiosity. Mockery. Humiliation burned through her veins. Finally, she forced herself to move. "Alpha." Her voice trembled slightly. The room became quiet once more. Damon looked at her. For the first time that night, guilt flickered across his face. Aria swallowed hard. "What about us?" The question came out barely above a whisper. But in the silent hall, everyone heard it. Damon remained silent for several moments. Then he answered. "There is no us anymore." The words struck harder than any physical blow. Aria felt the ground disappear beneath her feet. "No us?" she repeated weakly. Damon's jaw tightened. "Our bond is weak." Gasps spread throughout the hall. "Our packs need stronger alliances. Selene is the better choice for Moonfang's future." Aria stared at him in disbelief. After everything. After years together. After every promise. This was his reason? Politics? Power? Status? Selene stepped forward and wrapped an arm around Damon's. "You should be grateful, Aria." Aria slowly turned toward her. Selene's smile was sweet. But her eyes were cruel. "You were never worthy of standing beside an Alpha like Damon." Murmurs spread through the crowd. Aria's hands clenched into fists. The old Aria would have cried. The old Aria would have begged. But something inside her broke. And when something breaks completely... Sometimes it becomes stronger. She lifted her chin. Her silver eyes hardened. "If that's truly how you feel, Alpha, then I have nothing more to say." A flash of pain crossed Damon's face. But Aria no longer cared. Without another word, she turned around and walked away. Every step felt heavier than the last. The whispers followed her. The pity. The humiliation. The betrayal. Yet she refused to let them see her cry. Not here. Not in front of them. Not in front of him. The moment she stepped outside the hall, the cold night air hit her face. Only then did the tears finally fall. She pressed a trembling hand against her mouth to stop herself from sobbing aloud. The pain was unbearable. How could Damon do this? How could the man she loved choose someone else so easily? Above her, the full moon shone brightly. Aria looked up at it through tear-filled eyes. "Why?" she whispered. No answer came. Only silence. What she didn't know was that tonight's rejection would change her destiny forever. Because deep within her, a tiny heartbeat had already begun to grow. And neither Aria nor Damon knew that their greatest secret had already been created. The child who would one day unite their fates.
