The Boy At The Window

Chapter 10: Damon didn't sleep that night. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Aria. The shock in her face. The pain in her voice. The distance she had placed between them. Four years had changed many things. But one thing remained the same. He still couldn't stop thinking about her. The hotel room felt suffocating. By sunrise, Damon had already given up trying to sleep. A knock sounded on the door. Ethan entered carrying two cups of coffee. "You look terrible." Damon glared at him. Ethan sat down anyway. "So?" "So what?" "How did it go?" Damon laughed bitterly. "She hates me." The Beta wasn't surprised. "What exactly did you expect?" Damon rubbed his face. "I don't know." "Forgiveness after four years?" The Alpha remained silent. Even he knew how unreasonable that sounded. Ethan sighed. "You broke her heart, Damon." The words stung because they were true. For years he had justified his decision. The alliance. The pack's future. Political stability. All logical reasons. Yet standing before Aria again had forced him to confront a painful truth. Logic didn't erase consequences. And the consequence of his choice was the woman who now wanted nothing to do with him. --- Meanwhile, Aria sat in her apartment kitchen. She stared at her untouched breakfast. Leo noticed immediately. "Mama?" She blinked. "Yes?" "Are you sad?" The innocent question pierced straight through her defenses. Children always noticed more than adults realized. "No." The lie sounded weak. Leo climbed into her lap. "You're thinking about the wolf from your dreams." Aria froze. "What?" The little boy nodded seriously. "The black wolf." A chill ran down her spine. How could he know that? She had never told him. Never. Yet somehow he spoke as if he understood. Before she could ask another question, Leo suddenly smiled. "Don't worry." His voice sounded unusually confident. "He won't hurt us." Aria stared at him. For a brief moment, her son seemed far older than his years. Then the moment vanished. And he was simply Leo again. Asking for pancakes. --- Across town, Damon sat in the SUV watching Aria's apartment building. He knew it was ridiculous. Maybe even creepy. Yet he couldn't leave. Not yet. Something inside him needed to know she was okay. Needed to see her one more time. The apartment curtains shifted. A small figure appeared in the window. Damon frowned. A child. The little boy couldn't have been older than four. Dark hair. Bright eyes. Tiny hands pressed against the glass. The child looked outside curiously. Damon smiled despite himself. Then the boy looked directly at him. The smile vanished. A strange sensation shot through Damon's body. The child's eyes. They looked familiar. Painfully familiar. The little boy tilted his head. Almost as if studying him. Then suddenly he waved. Damon blinked. Slowly, without thinking, he waved back. The child laughed. The sound was too distant to hear. Yet Damon somehow knew he was laughing. A strange warmth spread through his chest. Then Aria appeared behind the boy. The moment she noticed what he was looking at, her entire body stiffened. Her face turned pale. And for the first time since arriving in Silverhaven, Damon saw genuine fear in her eyes. Not anger. Not resentment. Fear. Aria immediately pulled Leo away from the window. The curtains closed. Damon's heart began pounding. Something wasn't right. Why had she reacted like that? Who was the child? And why did he suddenly feel as though his entire world had shifted? --- Inside the apartment, Aria knelt before Leo. Her hands trembled slightly. "What did I tell you about talking to strangers?" Leo looked confused. "He wasn't a stranger." Aria's stomach dropped. "What do you mean?" The little boy smiled. "The black wolf." Her blood turned cold. "Leo..." "He found us." For a moment, neither spoke. Aria struggled to breathe. Because she suddenly understood something terrifying. Damon had seen him. Maybe only briefly. But he had seen him. And if Damon spent enough time around Leo... The resemblance would become impossible to ignore. The same eyes. The same expressions. The same wolf scent hidden beneath the surface. The secret she had protected for four years was in danger. For the first time since leaving Moonfang, Aria felt truly afraid. Because Damon Blackwood was many things. Stubborn. Proud. Powerful. And once he started asking questions... He never stopped until he found answers. --- That evening, Damon sat alone on a park bench. The image of the little boy refused to leave his mind. There was something about him. Something Damon couldn't explain. A strange connection. A sense of familiarity. Almost as if— "No." He shook his head. It was impossible. Four years. The timing... His thoughts stopped. Slowly, very slowly, realization began forming. His pulse accelerated. His breathing became uneven. Could it be? No. Surely not. Yet the possibility refused to disappear. A child around four years old. Aria's fear. The resemblance. The timing. "Damon." Ethan's voice interrupted his thoughts. The Alpha looked up. His Beta immediately noticed the change in his expression. "What happened?" Damon swallowed hard. Then asked the question that would change everything. "Ethan..." "What?" "Find out if Aria has a child." The Beta froze. Silence stretched between them. Then Ethan's eyes widened. Because he had reached the exact same conclusion. And if they were right... The future was about to become far more complicated than either of them imagined. The following morning, Aria barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Damon standing across the street. Watching. Thinking. Questioning. For four years, she had protected Leo's secret. Now that protection felt fragile. Dangerously fragile. Leo sat at the kitchen table happily eating pancakes. Completely unaware of the storm surrounding him. "Mama?" Aria looked up. "Yes?" "Can we go to the park later?" His innocent smile softened her heart. No matter what happened, she would protect him. Always. "We'll see." Leo grinned. For him, that meant yes. --- Across town, Damon and Ethan sat inside a private office. A contact from Silverhaven had arrived carrying information. The investigator placed a folder on the desk. "This is everything we found." Damon immediately opened it. His pulse quickened. Employment records. Residency documents. Medical licenses. School enrollment forms. Then— A single document. Leo Nightshade. Age: Four. Damon's heart stopped. Four years old. Exactly four years old. Ethan slowly exhaled. Neither man spoke. The implications were obvious. Painfully obvious. The investigator continued. "The child lives with Doctor Aria Nightshade." Damon stared at the paper. His hands tightened. For years he believed Aria had left alone. Now there was a child. A child born shortly after she disappeared. A child whose age matched perfectly. A child who looked familiar. Too familiar. "Do we know the father?" The investigator shook his head. "No records." Damon's jaw clenched. No father listed. Nothing. The silence became suffocating. Then Ethan quietly asked, "What are you thinking?" Damon looked toward the window. The answer terrified him. Because deep down, he already knew. --- Meanwhile, Aria arrived at the hospital. Doctor Hayes immediately noticed her distraction. "Something bothering you?" Aria forced a smile. "Just tired." The older doctor raised an eyebrow. "You've performed surgery while running on less sleep than this." She laughed weakly. He wasn't wrong. But this wasn't exhaustion. This was fear. The kind of fear she hadn't felt since leaving Moonfang. A nurse suddenly rushed into the room. "Doctor Aria?" "Yes?" "Someone's asking for you downstairs." Aria frowned. "Who?" The nurse shrugged. "He wouldn't give his name." A strange feeling settled in her stomach. Slowly, she walked toward the reception area. Each step felt heavier than the last. Then she saw him. Damon. Standing near the entrance. Her entire body froze. Several nurses nearby were openly staring. A man as handsome and commanding as Damon naturally attracted attention. Unfortunately, Aria knew exactly how dangerous he could be. Their eyes met. For a brief moment, neither moved. Then Damon walked toward her. "Aria." The sound of her name in his voice felt far too familiar. "What do you want?" The coldness in her tone made several nearby nurses glance at each other. Damon ignored them. "I just want to talk." "No." The answer came immediately. "Aria—" "No." Her voice became firmer. "You don't get to walk back into my life whenever it's convenient." Damon flinched. The words struck harder than any physical blow. Yet he couldn't blame her. Not after what he'd done. "I deserve that." "Yes." The honesty surprised him. Aria folded her arms. "What exactly are you hoping to accomplish?" Damon hesitated. Because the truth sounded ridiculous. I miss you. I regret everything. I can't stop thinking about you. None of those seemed sufficient. Finally, he said, "I want a chance to make things right." Aria laughed. A sad laugh. "You can't." The words carried years of pain. Years of loneliness. Years of rebuilding herself. "You can't fix what happened." Before Damon could respond, Aria turned and walked away. Again. Leaving him standing alone. And somehow, that hurt even more than before. --- Later that afternoon, Leo played in the park. Birds fluttered around him. Squirrels approached without fear. The usual strange behavior that followed him everywhere. But today something felt different. The animals seemed nervous. Restless. A black crow landed nearby. It let out several sharp cries. Leo frowned. "What?" The bird cried again. His expression changed immediately. Someone was watching. The crow flew away. Leo slowly looked around. At first, he saw nothing unusual. Then he spotted a man standing beneath a tree. The stranger wasn't moving. Wasn't smiling. Wasn't doing anything. Just watching. The little boy's instincts immediately screamed danger. For the first time in his life, Leo felt afraid. --- That evening, the mysterious observer returned to the warehouse. The hooded figure waited inside. "Report." "The Alpha suspects." The hooded figure smiled. "Good." "And the child?" The observer hesitated. "The child noticed me." For the first time, the hooded figure seemed interested. "Noticed you?" "Yes." Silence followed. Then a low chuckle echoed through the room. "Even stronger than expected." The observer frowned. "What should we do?" The hooded figure stepped into the moonlight. Silver eyes glowed. "Nothing." "Nothing?" "Not yet." A dangerous smile spread across his face. "Let fate bring them together first." The observer lowered his head. "As you wish." The hooded figure turned toward the darkness. Everything was moving according to plan. Aria. Damon. Leo. Soon all three would become pieces in a much larger game. And when the truth finally emerged... The werewolf world would never be the same again.
