A New Reason to Live

Chapter 5: The words echoed through Aria's mind long after Grandmother Elara spoke them. "You're pregnant." Everything around her seemed to fade. The crackling fire. The ticking clock hanging on the wall. Even the scent of herbs drifting through the cottage. All she could hear was the rapid pounding of her own heart. Pregnant. Slowly, her gaze dropped to her stomach. There was nothing different about it yet. No visible sign. No indication that a tiny life was growing within her. Yet somehow, she already felt different. As if the world had shifted beneath her feet. As if fate had rewritten her future in a single moment. A tear slid down her cheek. Then another. Grandmother Elara remained silent, giving her time to process the news. Aria's fingers trembled as they rested against her abdomen. A child. Damon's child. Their child. A painful ache spread through her chest. For years she had imagined having a family with Damon. She had pictured their future countless times. Their wedding. Their pups running through the pack grounds. Growing old together. Those dreams had once felt certain. Now they lay shattered around her like broken glass. Yet somehow, one piece of that dream remained. The child. The innocent life that had been created before everything fell apart. Aria closed her eyes. The tears came harder. Not because she regretted the child. Never. But because she suddenly realized she would be facing motherhood alone. The reality was terrifying. She wasn't Luna. She wasn't Damon's mate anymore. She was simply a woman whose heart had been broken. A woman carrying a secret. Grandmother Elara finally reached across the table and took her hand. "Child." Aria looked up. Fear filled her silver eyes. "What am I going to do?" The question came out in a whisper. For the first time since the rejection ceremony, she felt truly lost. Elara's expression softened. "You will do what women have done since the beginning of time." "And what's that?" The older woman smiled. "You will survive." The simple answer stunned Aria. "You make it sound easy." "It isn't." Elara squeezed her hand. "Nothing worthwhile ever is." Silence settled between them. Outside, birds sang as the morning sun climbed higher into the sky. Life continued. The world continued. Even though Aria felt as though hers had stopped. After several minutes, she finally asked the question haunting her thoughts. "Should I tell Damon?" The room immediately became quiet. Elara didn't answer right away. Instead, she studied Aria carefully. "What does your heart say?" Aria laughed bitterly. "My heart is the reason I'm in this mess." The older woman couldn't argue with that. Aria stared into the fire. Part of her wanted Damon to know. Part of her wanted him to take responsibility. Part of her wanted him to regret everything. But another part... The larger part... Was afraid. Afraid of how he might react. Afraid of Selene. Afraid of the pack. Afraid of becoming trapped in endless political games. Most of all, she was afraid of her child growing up as a weapon in someone else's struggle for power. Eventually she shook her head. "No." Elara nodded. "No?" "Not now." Aria rested both hands protectively over her stomach. "This child deserves peace." A fierce determination entered her eyes. "I won't allow anyone to use my baby." For the first time since the rejection, Elara saw something powerful awakening within her granddaughter. Strength. Not the strength of a warrior. Not the strength of an Alpha. But the strength of a mother. And there was nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her child. That evening, Aria sat alone outside the cottage. The moon hung low above the forest. Silver light bathed the trees. For years she had loved nights like this. Tonight felt different. Everything felt different. She leaned back in her chair and listened to the sounds of the forest. Crickets chirped. Leaves rustled. A distant owl called from somewhere among the trees. Normally those sounds brought comfort. Tonight they brought memories. Memories of Damon. The first time they met. The first time he held her hand. The first time he told her he loved her. Every memory hurt. Yet she couldn't stop thinking about him. Despite everything. Despite the betrayal. Despite the rejection. A part of her still loved him. The realization made her angry. How could she still love someone who had hurt her so deeply? How could her heart be so foolish? Aria wiped away fresh tears. "No more." The words were barely audible. No more crying. No more hoping. No more waiting. That chapter of her life was over. Now she had something far more important to focus on. Her child. The following morning, Aria made her decision. She would leave Moonfang. Immediately. The longer she stayed, the greater the risk. Eventually people would notice her pregnancy. Questions would follow. Rumors would spread. Sooner or later Damon would learn the truth. By then it might be impossible to escape. No. She had to leave now. While she still could. When she informed Grandmother Elara of her decision, the older woman wasn't surprised. In fact, she looked relieved. "Silverhaven will be good for you." Aria nodded. The human city was far from pack territory. Far from Damon. Far from Selene. It was the perfect place to disappear. The next two days passed quickly. Aria packed only what she truly needed. Clothing. Books. Medical certificates. Important documents. Everything else she left behind. Many of the items carried memories. Photographs. Gifts. Letters. Most painful of all was a small wooden box hidden in her bedroom. Inside lay dozens of keepsakes from her relationship with Damon. Old photographs. Pressed flowers. Small gifts exchanged throughout the years. Aria stared at the box for a long time. Then she closed it. She couldn't bring herself to throw it away. Not yet. Perhaps someday. But not today. On her final evening in Moonfang territory, she walked alone through the forest. The same forest where she had spent most of her life. The same forest where she had fallen in love. The moonlight filtered through the branches above. For a moment she simply stood there. Listening. Remembering. Saying goodbye. She didn't know if she would ever return. The thought should have frightened her. Instead, it brought peace. For the first time since the ceremony, she felt as though she was moving toward something instead of running from something. A future. A new beginning. A life she would build herself. When dawn arrived, she was ready. Grandmother Elara hugged her tightly before she left. "Promise me something." "What?" "Don't let your pain define you." Aria blinked. The words struck deep. Elara smiled softly. "You are more than a rejected mate." Tears filled Aria's eyes. Then she nodded. "I promise." Moments later she climbed into the transport vehicle. As it pulled away from the cottage, she looked back one final time. Her grandmother stood waving. The sight nearly broke her heart. But she didn't ask the driver to stop. She didn't change her mind. She simply watched until the cottage disappeared from view. Then she turned forward. Toward the future. Far away, inside the Alpha Mansion, Damon stood before his office window. Something felt wrong. For two days he had been unable to focus. Unable to sleep. His wolf paced endlessly inside him. Restless. Agitated. As if searching for something. Or someone. Damon clenched his fists. He told himself he had made the right decision. The logical decision. The decision that would protect the pack. So why did it feel like the greatest mistake of his life? He looked toward the distant forest. A strange emptiness settled inside his chest. An emptiness he couldn't explain. Because at that very moment, the woman he loved was leaving Moonfang forever. And neither of them knew that fate had already begun preparing their next meeting. One that would change everything.
