Month three brought noticeable change. Not dramatic. Not movie-montage-level. But real. Her face looked slimmer. Her waist curved differently. Her arms were firmer. Her legs stronger. But more than that — she felt different. She was more confident and didn't worry constently what other people thought about her. She walked differently. She spoke differently. She existed differently. She bought a dress — fitted, soft, black — and stared at herself in the mirror in disbelief. She couldn't believe that the person staring back at her was herself. “Holy s**t,” she whispered. “Is this… me?” She cried. Not because she hated what she saw. Because she loved it. Her best friend Jenna nearly screamed when she saw her. “Mara. You look illegal.” “In a good way?” “In a ‘someone should arrest you before you ruin lives’ way.” Mara laughed. At work, people noticed. “Did you cut your hair?” “No.” “You look amazing.” “Have you been working out?” She shrugged. “Something like that.” Inside, she glowed. And for the first time since the breakup, she stopped thinking about Ethan. Which felt like freedom.
