Chapter 10 — Vermont's POV I opened the door again. She leaned against the wall like she didn’t have the strength to stand straight anymore, her head tipped back slightly, cheeks flushed, lips parted like she’d been breathing too hard. The chain around her ankle glinted faintly when she shifted her weight. “I’ll drop the key to the chain on the table,” I said, my voice sounding rougher than I intended. “If I were you, I wouldn’t try anything stupid.” Her eyes flicked to me. “My pack members have orders,” I continued, nodding toward the chain. “If they see you, they’ll kill you on sight. So don't try to escape” I waited for a reaction, but she gave me nothing. That annoyed me more than it should have. I shut the door hard and walked away before the silence could crawl under my skin.
