Chapter 2: The Unwanted Reunion

1137 Words
Days had passed since Lily left Alex. A part of her heart was missing; she felt like nothing. But she kept reminding herself that walking away was the right thing. She told herself, every day, that she was worth more, that she felt lonely. She kept busy with work and steered clear of anyone who reminded her of him. Until one morning, her adoptive parents called. They were throwing a party for Alex’s grandfather’s birthday, and she was invited. Lily didn’t want to go. She was sure Alex and Amelia would be there, and that was a thought that made her feel like throwing up. But her parents insisted. “Lily, will you come please?” her mom said. “Our family, we would be grateful for that.” Lily couldn’t say no. So she said yes, even though she dreaded it.. Now the day of the party arrived and there was Lily standing before the mirror. She dressed in a simple but elegant dress and felt that somehow she was strong. She breathe deeply. “I can do this,” she muttered. “I won’t let them see how much they hurt me.” When she arrived, People, music, and laughter filled the room. But Lily felt out of place. She saw Alex across the room with Amelia. They looked perfect, smiling, laughing. Her heart was crying, but she kept control. As she passed, whispers and gazes of the people followed her. A few even approached her with low tones questioning if she was fine. Others with scornful looks. She finally found a quiet corner and stood alone, wishing the night would end soon. She felt small, like she didn’t belong. Then, she noticed someone standing next to her. She turned and saw a tall man with sharp eyes and a serious face. “You must be Lily,” he said in a calm voice. She nodded, unsure who he was. “I’m Daniel. Alex’s uncle.” Lily’s eyes widened. She had heard about Daniel. People said he was successful in business and not very friendly. Yet here he was, talking to her. Daniel seemed to understand her sadness. “It’s hard, isn’t it?” he said gently. “Being here, seeing all this.” “It’s tough, huh?” he asked softly. “To be somewhere and… see everything around you?” . “I didn’t want to come here,” she said softly. “My parents forced me to.” “You don’t have to pretend with me,” he said. “I know how artificial these people are.” For the first time that night, Lily felt like someone truly understood her. Daniel didn’t pity her. He didn’t judge her. He just stood beside her, like he was protecting her. As the night went on, Lily stayed close to Daniel. He made her feel safe. They talked about small things, music, food, and flowers in the room. He never mentioned Alex or Amelia. He just treated her like a friend, and Lily slowly began to relax. But then, Alex and Amelia walked toward them. Lily’s heart pounded. She tried to stay calm. Alex smiled smugly. “Lily,” he said softly. “I didn’t expect to see you here.” “I got invited,” she responded, voice working hard to sound even. Amelia gave a fake little laugh. “It’s nice to see you again, Lily. I hope there are no hard feelings.” Lily felt anger rise in her chest. How could Amelia pretend nothing happened? She wanted to talk, to yell, but before a word left her mouth, Daniel took one step forward. "There’s no need for this,” he said, calmly but firmly looking at Alex. “ It’s nice to see you again. Why don't you give us a little space” Alex looked surprised. “Uncle Daniel, we’re just being polite.” Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “Polite? Lily deserves more respect than that.” Amelia looked nervous. “It was not our intention to upset her.” “Then don't,” Daniel replied sharply.. Alex and Amelia left as they made their way back out. With relief and gratitude, Lily turns to Daniel. It was the first time she had ever been defended by anyone. Daniel looked back at her. “Are you alright?” Lily nodded. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I wouldn’t have thought of anything without you,” Lily said with a nod. “ You don't need to go through this alone.” He states. “Not anymore at least.” They spent the rest of the night together, ignoring the stares. When it was time to leave, Daniel offered to drive her home. Lily hesitated, but she trusted him. She said yes. During their journey through the quiet streets, Daniel looked at her side. With a serious tone, he began saying "Lily, I know and understand you're hurt. I also understand the sensation of being betrayed by someone you trusted.” Lily looked at him, surprised. His eyes also held pain.... “We don’t exactly know each other,” he said, “but I would like to help. And I have a plan.” “What kind of plan?” Lily asked, curious. With deep breath, Daniel declared: "It's the most effective way to seek revenge on the people who hurt you, to show that you've moved on. That you don't need them.”. Lily frowned. “But how?” Daniel smiled slightly. “Marry me,” he said. “Become Alex’s aunt.” Lily’s mouth dropped open. “Marry you?” Daniel nodded. “Alex left you and expected you to disappear. But if you marry me, you’ll be part of his family. He’ll have to see you everywhere. He’ll know he didn’t break you.” Lily’s heart raced. It was a bold idea. Part of her was scared. But another part deep inside felt strong. Powerful. She wouldn’t be the girl left behind. Not anymore. With a soft voice, she asked why he had done this for her. His face softened as he spoke, "I know what it's like to be alone," he said. With a smile on his face, he stated that it might be entertaining. Lily looked into his eyes. There was something warm there, something honest. She had doubts about her trust in him at this point. After a long time, she felt hopeful for the first of her life. Gradually, she nodded. "OK," she said. “Let's go ahead.". Daniel gave a grinning smile and squeezed her hand. "You won't regret it, Lily.". As they drove on, Lily looked out the window. Her mind was spinning. She didn’t know what would happen next. But for the first time in a long time, she was ready.
