I didn't die that day. Before the car was swallowed by the mud and debris, I shoved the door open and rolled down the embankment. Later, I crawled behind a protruding rock and clung tightly to one of the roadside safety posts, listening as the pink electric car behind me was swept away by the raging mudflow. Before my phone was ruined by the water, I managed to send my location to Claire. By the time the rescue helicopter found me, dawn had already broken.
