Chapter 28: Crossing the Border

276 Words
The black sedan carved through the night, leaving the flickering lights of Berlin behind. Adam sat in the passenger seat, the rhythmic hum of the tires against the asphalt acting as a countdown to the confrontation ahead. Elena drove with a silent, iron-clad focus, her eyes reflecting the glowing dashboard lights. "The facility is located beneath the Jungfrau massif," Elena said, breaking the long silence. "It’s not just a lab anymore; Thorne has turned it into a digital fortress. To the world, it’s a weather research station. To us, it’s the brain of 'The Bridge'." Adam opened the medical kit she had used earlier, checking his wound. It was healing, but the real scars were inside. "How do we get in? I designed the security protocols, but Thorne will have changed the encryption keys by now." Elena handed him a small, encrypted tablet. "He changed the keys, but he couldn't change the architecture. The physical structure still relies on the original cooling vents and emergency bypasses you put in the blueprints. We aren’t going through the front door, Adam. We’re going through the mountain itself." As they crossed the border into the winding roads of the Alps, the temperature outside plummeted. Snow began to dust the windshield. Adam looked at the metallic cylinder in his lap. It was the only weapon he had against a man who controlled the world’s data. "If we fail," Adam whispered, "there won't be a second chance." "Then we don't fail," Elena replied, her voice as cold as the mountain air. "The world thinks Subject Zero is a ghost. It’s time to show them that ghosts can still haunt the living."
