Chapter 16: Shadows of Truth

256 Words
The struggle was primal. Adam and the leader were locked in a desperate grapple, breaths ragged and heavy. Every muscle in Adam’s body screamed in protest, but the adrenaline acted as a numbing agent. With a sharp twist and a surge of hidden strength, Adam managed to pin his opponent against the cold brick wall, his forearm pressed hard against the man's throat. "Who sent you?" Adam hissed, his face inches away from the leader's mask. "Give me a name, or this alley becomes your tomb." The man let out a strained, wheezing laugh that chilled Adam to the bone. "You think... names matter now? We are everywhere, Adam. You're fighting a tide, not a person." Suddenly, a distant siren wailed, echoing through the narrow streets. The police were closing in. Adam had seconds to decide. He noticed a strange, metallic cylinder dropped by the leader during the struggle—something that looked too advanced for a common mercenary. Without a word, Adam delivered a final blow to disarm the man completely, grabbed the cylinder, and disappeared into the labyrinth of Berlin’s backstreets just as the blue lights began to flicker against the walls. He was wounded, hunted, and exhausted, but for the first time, he had a piece of the puzzle in his hand. As he reached a safe house—a derelict basement on the outskirts of the city—he sat in the dark, the mysterious device glowing faintly on the table. The confrontation was over, but the real mystery had just begun.
