The melodious chime of the school bell marked the beginning of the second period, a dreaded mathematics class for many. Student 1 couldn't hide their disdain, remarking, "Oh, it's math period."
Student 1, growing increasingly puzzled, questioned their peers, "Did you see the math teacher come to school today?"
Student 2 replied, "He is absent."
However, Student 3, who had a clear view of the school's entrance, said, "No, man. I saw him walking in the corridor during the first lecture."
"Ahh, I see," Student 1 "So, he did come to school after all."
Their conversation was abruptly interrupted as Student 2 spotted the teacher approaching. "Hey, everyone, go back to your seats," they urged, their voice hushed. "The teacher is here."
Following the lead, the classroom quickly fell silent as the students settled into their seats. Mr. Anderson, the teacher, entered the classroom, he greeted the class, saying, "Good morning, everyone."
In unison, the students responded politely, "Good morning, teacher."
Mr. Anderson cleared his throat, preparing to address the class. "Please, sit down, everyone. Today, I won't be taking your lecture. I have to attend an important meeting, so you'll need to revise your last exercise. Please, don't make any trouble behind my back, okay?"
And he left the class
A girl named Naina approached me, her face filled with uncertainty, and asked if I could help her understand the chapter that Sir had assigned. Naina had recently been transferred with us to this 12th B section, as coming from a different group, she found herself alone without her previous classmates.
I smiled and replied, "Of course, Naina, I'd be happy to help you."
As we delved into our revision, my focus was momentarily pulled away by a disturbing scene. A group of boys from our class, including , seemed to be engaged in an unsettling conversation with a girl named Mona, who was sitting in front of us. But then I decided to pay no mind to them.
While doing my work, I couldn't help but notice that these boys frequently targeted girls from our class who had been with them since the 11th standard. It was a disheartening pattern of behavior that had become all too familiar.
As I continued to help Naina understand the chapter, I sensed that something was bothering her. She was looking at me with a peculiar expression, a mix of frustration and disbelief.
I turned to her and asked, "What happened?"
Naina hesitated before responding, "Aren't you hearing what they're saying to Mona?"
It was only then that I turned my attention to the boys. They were sitting together, and one boy, the center of attention, was the subject of their conversation. They were making lewd and disrespectful comments about his appearance and abilities, bragging about his supposed prowess with crude remarks like, "Look at our boy... He's got it all. When it comes to looks, handsomeness, and stamina, he can go all night. Satisfaction guaranteed."
The atmosphere in the classroom had grown uncomfortable, and I couldn't help but feel a mixture of anger and disappointment at the behavior of those boys from our class, who seemed to revel in their derogatory comments and lack of respect for their fellow students, particularly the girls who had been with them since the 11th standard.
I couldn't stand by silently any longer, so I addressed the boy who was making those offensive comments. His name was Dalmi, and initially, I had mistaken his name for that of a girl.
"Hey, you," I said firmly, "spout your nonsense somewhere else where we can't hear it."
Dalmi responded with a smirk and a dismissive tone, "Brother, oh, brother, let's continue it somewhere else where Ruby can't hear us." His companions joined in the laughter, and the whole group quickly scattered, dispersing like insects fleeing the light.
What surprised me most was that the boy sitting in the middle of the group was Kerin, a person I had considered to be decent and respectful. It was a stark reminder that sometimes, people could reveal aspects of themselves that were both disappointing and unexpected.
