Chapter 8 Observations Genesee excused herself to wash her hands, but more to ready herself from what she was about to face. She wasn’t fearful about meeting the townspeople. It went deeper than that. Those unheard voices had never ceased whispering to her. Once she put herself in the midst of them, their silent pleas would wash over her and maybe deafen her with their entreaties. Her duty was now three-fold. She had to help these people. More than that, she had to somehow get Carq to stop thinking of himself foremost, and put his people ahead of his own needs. She had to get him to realize his people didn’t create this dilemma, and worse, he was exacerbating their troubles by distancing himself.
