The Enemy Inside

Part 4 Elena couldn't breathe. “Someone inside your organization?” she repeated. Dante nodded. “Yes.” “Then how do you know I can trust you?” “You don't.” His answer came so quickly that Elena stared at him. Dante leaned back against the seat. “Trust isn't something I expect from you.” “Then why did you save me?” His eyes met hers. “Because I need you alive.” Elena's stomach tightened. “Why?” Before Dante could answer, his phone rang. He looked at the screen. His expression immediately changed. “It's my head of security.” He answered. “What happened?” A man's panicked voice came through the phone. “Boss, there's been an attack at the warehouse.” Dante's eyes narrowed. “How many?” “Seven men are dead. We found one survivor.” “Who?” The man hesitated. “He says he was sent by the Black Serpents.” Dante's jaw tightened. “I'm coming.” He ended the call. Elena noticed something. “You know them?” Dante looked at her. “The Black Serpents have been trying to destroy my organization for years.” “And my mother is connected to them?” “We don't know yet.” Elena looked down at the photograph in her hands. She couldn't stop thinking about her mother. If Isabelle was alive, why had she stayed away? Why had she allowed Elena to believe she was dead? And why were dangerous people suddenly coming after her? Dante opened the car door. “Stay here.” Elena grabbed his arm. “I'm coming with you.” “No.” “I want answers.” “This isn't a game.” “Neither is my life.” Dante stared at her. For several seconds, neither moved. Finally, he sighed. “Fine. But you stay beside me.” --- Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the warehouse. Several black vehicles surrounded the building. Armed men stood everywhere. Dante stepped out first. Elena followed. The moment they entered the warehouse, she felt something was wrong. Too quiet. Dante raised his hand. Everyone stopped. He looked around. “Search every room.” The men scattered. Elena stayed close to Dante. Then they heard a weak voice. “Help…” They followed the sound. A wounded man was lying against the wall. Dante crouched beside him. “Who attacked you?” The man struggled to breathe. “The Black Serpents…” Dante's eyes hardened. “Who gave them our location?” The man looked toward Elena. Her heart stopped. Then he whispered: “Her.” Elena stepped backward. “What?” Dante stood slowly. The wounded man pointed at her. “She betrayed you…” Elena's face went pale. “I don't even know this man!” Dante looked at her. For the first time, suspicion appeared in his eyes. Then— The warehouse doors slammed shut. Every light went out. A voice echoed through the darkness. “Welcome home, Elena.” She froze. She knew that voice. She had heard it once before. When she was a child. Her mother's voice. “Elena…” A whisper followed from somewhere in the darkness. “I'm sorry I left you.” End of Part 4
