AZOOSPERMIA.
"Should I take you to a hospital, sir?" Ellis's voice cut through Damon's thoughts again.
He shook his head slightly.
"No need."
The car soon arrived at Carter Holdings, and Damon made his way up to the office.
"Mr. Carter, the new secretary will arrive today. Would you like me to send a copy of her file for you to review beforehand?" Ellis asked, struggling to keep up with the man's large steps.
"I already told you I need a male secretary."
Was Damon's reply, his voice deep as he pushed the door to his office open. Behind him, Ellis, his personal assistant, couldn't help but hurry along behind, saying,
"Mr. Carter, her profile has been reviewed. She's the best candidate."
Damon gave it a small thought. He didn't want a female to avoid triggering Sophia like the last time, but if this secretary was as great as his assistant said, then...
He casually gave a small nod. "Send it over."
A few minutes later, he was settled behind the mahogany desk, flipping through a file while listening to Ellis report his schedule for today, when his gaze caught the name on the file.
Damon paused, fingers steepled as he stared at what was before him, and then, almost immediately, his lips curved into a sneer.
Meanwhile, Skyler, having just arrived at Carter Holdings, clutched the jade necklace she had brought with her and pressed her lips together before stepping inside.
The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open to reveal endless marble floors stretching before her.
Her heart pounded with both fear and anticipation as she stepped in. Thank God for Clara's backup plan.
But before she could take another step, a masculine voice called from behind her.
"Ms. Skyler Thompson?"
She turned. A young man in a tailored suit stood there, probably mid-twenties. His smile didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Yes, that's me," she answered, offering a small smile in return.
He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
"Ms. Thompson, I'm sorry. There's been a change. The CEO has requested a male candidate for the secretary position. The role has been reassigned."
Skyler's smile froze.
"The... email just went out," he added quickly, as if that made it better.
"We apologize for the inconvenience." With that, he turned and left.
Skyler watched him leave as if he was getting away from something. She looked back at the top floor, and a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
Half an hour later,
"The order delivery for the CEO has arrived."
The receptionist nodded with a bright smile.
"68th floor, first office on your right."
She watched the courier leave after saying thank you. She seemed young and full of energy, probably a college student. But wait, why does that voice sound familiar?
Skyler adjusted her face cap and nose mask properly just as the doors to the elevator slid open again.
The hallway was quiet, perfect timing. She quickly reached for the doorknob and twisted it open.
The door creaked open, revealing an exquisite office and a man's figure seated behind a mahogany desk, his expression stern as he read through some documents.
He looked up at the sound of the door opening, his brows furrowed at the lack of manners. He was going to fire whoever it was when his gaze landed on the woman dressed as a courier.
He could tell it was her at first glance. The woman from last night's party, the one whom he retracted her employee requirements for. For some reason, he had the shape of that woman carved at the back of his head since last night, almost like he'd seen her before...
He shook the thought off, feeling a headache coming on.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, his voice cold and deadly.
She didn't flinch.
Instead, she crossed the distance between them, her palm placed flat on his sanitized desk.
"Mr. Carter, I'm saying the truth. If you don't believe me, we can go to the hospital for a DNA test!"
That was it.
Slam!
The pen slammed hard on the table, breaking into countless fragments.
Damon pushed off his seat and strode towards her. The next minute, Skyler's back hit the cold wall, the man pinning her said through gritted teeth, his warm breath brushing against her skin in a manner that made her whole body tremble.
"Who is it?"
"Liam..." She whispered, almost breathless.
Damon tilted his head.
"Liam sent you?"
"No... he's... your son!"
Slam!
She flinched when he slammed his fist hard against the wall beside her head, his eyes bloodshot.
He looked down at the petite figure, and only then did his eyes catch the necklace seated on her neck.
He reached for it with the tip of his finger, his cold fingertips sending shivers down her spine.
Something about it feels familiar.
Something he couldn't quite put his finger on.
"Where did you get this?" He asked, his voice grave.
"You gave it to me, remember?"
Thud.
Thud.
Damon took a step back, then slowly took the necklace from Skyler's neck. He turned away, massaging his temple slightly.
"Mr. Carter, I promise I'm not telling a lie. I'm not here to cause a feud between you and your wife. But something did happen five years ago, and our son... he's diagnosed with Lumina Syndrome. If we don't get his serum in time, his next flare could be fatal."
"If you don't believe me, a DNA test can prove it."
The man in front of her didn't turn, and Skyler found herself letting out a breath of relief.
Unknown to her, Damon didn't turn because her words were starting to make sense, instead he found her words quite amusing and almost believable.
He couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corner of his lips.
He must say this lady was truly resourceful. From getting her hands on his mom's necklace to having the guts to claim he has a son repeatedly...
If it weren't for the stack of doctor's reports, Damon might have convinced himself that a man like him—diagnosed with azoospermia ten years ago—could really have a son.
