Damon twirled the necklace gently between his fingers, watching the jade pendant catch the light each time he moved it.
"You don't have to prove anything." He said, his voice a low rumble.
Skyler, caught off guard couldn't help but blink repeatedly.
"I don't?"
She didn't understand why he suddenly sound like he believed her.
"Damon–"
He turned, closing the little distance between and Skyler found herself trapped between him and the wall again.
"You said the child is mine, fine I accept it."
"I mean it."
He stared down at her, his lips curling upwards.
"And if he doesn't. You'll have me to contend with." He let the words drop, eyes locked on her.
"It won't."
"Good."
Damon stepped away, grabbing his jacket off the chair's handle, his eyes not leaving hers for a moment.
"How long do we have until the serum is needed?" He asked, shrugging on the jacket effortlessly.
"About two week."
Skyler answered, voice low and skeptical.
He had his expression well controlled making it impossible to tell what he was thinking.
"I'll make time."
Skyler released a breath. "Thank y–"
"Don't thank me yet Ms Thompson, we're not finished yet." He turned to grab something from the table when he paused slightly.
“By the way, you have your job back.”
With that, he walked past her as though she were invisible, his long legs carrying him away.
Just now, he had seen the different emotions flickering in her eyes.
Good.
He wanted to see how long she could keep up the act and what little schemes she had up her sleeves.
He stepped into his private elevator and dragged in a deep breath.
Her words had been convincing.
Far too convincing.
For the first time, he found himself questioning his doctor's report.
He took out his phone and called his assistant.
“Get the car ready. I'm going for a check-up.”
**
Skyler returned to her office, her palms were sweaty and her legs a little unstable beneath her.
Just as she sat down, her phone rung. She picked it up with a slight tremble, her lips curling when she saw it was Mark.
"How did it go boss?"
Skyler thought about Damon's actions a few moments ago.
"It went well." She nodded at herself. So far he agreed to go get the serum with her, isn't that her sole purpose of coming here?
"That's great news. South's entreprise is about to go public, we need you at your best boss."
Mark's words reminded her of the life she'd built outside here. A life were she'll never have to be on the receiving end. All she needed was Liam by her side.
She nodded, about to hang up but a part of her wouldn't let her. She clutched the phone tighter, her voice low.
"Mark, I need you to do something for me."
The latter replied enthusiastically.
"I need you to gather information about Damon five years ago. What happened after the accident."
It was quiet fir a long moment.
"Boss–"
"Just do it." With that, she out the phone down and took a deep breath.
After that night five years ago, Damon disappeared the next morning. She learnt he had an accident on his way back home. He was taken outside the county for better care.
Nathan had stared at her with disgust and called off the engagement, her father had been so angry he kicked her out.
No one believed her when she told them, she could only leave while waiting for him to come back. Now he's back and he acted like that night never existed, like those promises were never made.
Skyler couldn't possibly let it slide could she?
The rest of the hours passed by quickly while Skyler busied herself with work.
The quick ring if her cellphone had her head snapping up the next minute.
It was Clara calling.
She swiped green quickly, and Clara's worried voice flooded in.
"Skyler, Liam is having a flare, he's asking for you."
The mouse dropped to the floor as Skyler stood from her seat.
"I'll be there in a minute." She said and hung then hurried off to find Damon, but he wasn't in his office.
The receptionist looked at her weirdly then gently shook her head saying:
"Mr Damon left, he didn't say where he was going."
She didn't even have his number.
Skyler could only leave the office in a haste, hoping and praying it wasn't the usual flare.
Meanwhile, the moment the taxi drove off, the back window of an Audi rolled down, revealing a well-defined face.
Damon watched the moving taxi with a frown.
“Follow that taxi.”
He ordered Ellis.
The young man didn't ask any questions and did as he was told.
Damon watched as the taxi took a turn.
She was leaving the city?
His eyes flashed with resentment, and his jaw clenched.
The test results from another hospital still sat on his lap.
The result was the same as ever.
Azoospermia.
For a moment, Skyler's words had ignited a small flame of hope in him.
Only for it to be crushed once again.
Did she really think she could deceive him?
Who was she working for?
What was her aim?
And where was she going?
All these questions ran through his mind until the taxi finally pulled to a stop in front of a hospital.
“Do I go in and have a look, sir?”
“No need.”
Damon opened the door and stepped out.
He was going to find out himself.
*
Skyler met Clara in the lobby. The latter hurried toward her the moment she saw her.
“How is he?”
“The doctors are in there with him.”
Skyler nodded and moved toward the door, but just as she reached it, it swung open and the doctor stepped out.
“Ms. Skyler, thank God you're here. I need to speak with you.”
“How is he?”
Skyler's eyes moved toward the room where Liam lay, probably asleep by now.
“He's out of danger. It wasn't the usual flare. This way, please.”
She followed the doctor to his office while Clara stepped aside to answer a phone call.
Damon stepped out of the corner, his eyes immediately settling on the closed door of the ward.
“Watch the exit,” he ordered Ellis.
Before Ellis could say anything, Damon pushed the door open.
His gaze immediately fell on the little figure lying on the hospital bed.
Damon froze.
For a moment, he simply stared at the child.
Ellis's words echoed in his mind.
"Skyler is also Mr. Thompson’s daughter and was supposed to marry into the Carter family. However, she went astray. There were rumors that she had been sleeping around. Sir Nathan eventually caught her in the act and called off their engagement. Now, it's uncertain who the father of her child is."
A bitter laugh escaped Damon.
So that was it.
Nathan had refused to take responsibility for her child, and now she wanted him to play the fool?
His jaw tightened.
Did she really think she could deceive him?
He had barely taken two steps towards the door when a small voice came from behind him.
“Daddy?”
