Chapter Nine - Whispers and Flames

1135 Words
Adrian’s POV The project should have been the highlight of my career at Sterling and Chase. Biggest assignment since I joined the firm. My name was on the lips of partners/board members I had only ever seen sweep into conference rooms with their entourage of assistants. It should have been validation , proof that the long nights, the hunger to prove myself, were finally worth something. Instead, all I could think about was Isabella. Working side by side with her every day was the sweetest torture I had ever known. I told myself that it was only work, that the late nights at the office and the shared silence bent over drafts and proposals were nothing more than professional collaboration. But my body didn’t believe me. My chest would tighten when her shoulder brushed mine by accident, when her perfume curled into my lungs and made me dizzy. I kept telling myself I was imagining it. That the little pauses in her speech when our eyes met were nothing. That the small smile she tried to hide when I cracked a joke was just her being polite. But then there was the touch. That cursed file; sitting in the center of the table like any other document. We both reached for it at the same time, and when my hand slid over hers, something inside me detonated. Not loudly, not violently but with the quiet, devastating force of a truth I could no longer run from. Her skin was warm, impossibly soft. For one breathless second, neither of us moved. My thumb grazed her knuckles as though it had a will of its own, and in that brief eternity, the entire office faded. The air between us thickened. Her eyes snapped to mine, wide, startled, and yet… she didn’t pull away. I didn’t either. I should have. God knows I should have. But my hand stayed there, soaking in the nearness of her, the intimacy that could ruin us both. When she finally shifted, clearing her throat as though nothing had happened, the ghost of her touch lingered like a scar I couldn’t erase. After that, I was done for. Every interaction carried an electric undercurrent. Every time she leaned close to point out something in a document, I caught myself holding my breath. Every laugh we shared felt too personal, too dangerous. And then, of course, the office began to notice. I caught the whispers first in passing; two colleagues exchanging a look when we walked into a meeting together. A smirk from a junior analyst when Isabella asked for my input. The sound of my name followed by a chuckle when I passed by a cluster of desks. At first I shrugged it off. People always gossiped. But then came the remark. We were in the middle of a team review, Isabella presenting her section with her usual poise, when her boss leaned back and said casually, “Isabella, I hope you are not onboarding just one person too closely.” The room chuckled. My throat closed up. I stole a glance at Isabella. For the first time in weeks, her composure cracked. Just for a second but I saw it. The sting. The humiliation. The fear. That was when the guilt crashed over me. I had been selfish, letting myself bask in every stolen glance, every fleeting touch. I had told myself it was harmless, that nothing had happened, but the truth was plain now: I was putting her reputation, her career on the line. That night, as we packed up in silence, I forced the words out. “Maybe we should… tone it down.” She looked at me sharply, her eyes unreadable. “Tone what down?” I swallowed. “You know. Just… us. The way people are… talking.” For a moment, I thought she might laugh. Or agree coldly. But instead, she studied me, long and quiet, as though she was weighing the cost of something she hadn’t yet named. And then she nodded. “I agree.” The words sliced through me. I had asked for them, yet hearing them felt like a punishment. Because the truth? I didn’t want to tone it down. Not even a little. But then I added, softer, almost reluctant: “Thing is, Isabella… I don’t actually want to keep my distance.” She turned to me but I couldn’t read her thoughts but I saw her catch her breath. She didn’t respond and the next thing I saw was her packing her laptop and walking out. I was left standing in the room, alone, in my thoughts and the echoing sound of her heels. The more I told myself to step back, the closer I found myself drifting. I craved her presence like oxygen. I wanted to hear her laugh, to watch her eyes soften when she was tired and forgot to keep her guard up. I wanted everything I had no right to want. Which is why the gala nearly broke me. When the invitation landed on my desk, I blinked at it like it was a mistake. My first thought was that I had been copied by accident; some administrative slip. I was busy working on a report, neck deep in it as I was working with a tight schedule that I didn’t realize that she had texted me. And for the first time in a while my heart skipped a bit when I saw her text on my phone. I almost couldn’t believe the content of the message. I blink several times and read the message over and over and over again just to be sure I wasn’t imagining this. I asked my self loudly; Did Isabella really just ask me to be her date for the gala? I mean, I know she had said we should attend together as project partners but it’s a date to me nonetheless. My heart stuttered. I wanted to say yes immediately, to drown in the fantasy of a night that felt dangerously close to a date. But the rational part of me screamed: this was reckless. People already whispered. Showing up at her side in formal wear? That would all but confirm what we hadn’t even admitted to ourselves. “I’ll be there.” But the truth was, I couldn’t say no to her. I never could. I texted her and responded; I will be there. Looking forward to it. That night, lying awake in the dark of my apartment, I pictured it; walking into the gala with her, the way heads would turn. I imagined her in a gown, radiant, untouchable, and yet somehow beside me. For one night, it would look like she was mine. And God help me, I wanted that more than I wanted my next breath.
