CHAPTER THIRTY Audrey followed the road signs back to Hawksmead and parked Malcolm’s car in her driveway. The morning air was bitingly cold and, as she entered her cavernous hall, her house did not feel much warmer. She closed the front door and its bang echoed briefly. On the floor, near the base of the stairs, were remnants of medical packaging left by the paramedics last night. She looked up the stairs to the half landing. What happened? Did Malcolm really see Bobby? Or was that the lie of a guilty man? ‘Bobby! It’s Audrey. I’m here. I’ve come to say goodbye.’ She stood and waited. ‘I will always love you.
