Chapter 4

717 Words
I arrive at school in the front seat of Devin's Black Chevy Nova. A non-negotiable term of an arrangement that I have no choice but to participate in, apparently. I could reject him but not only does the fear make me compliant, so does the aching pain in my chest when I think about it. I need to think clearly about my current predicament but it is impossible to breathe, much less think, within 100 yards of him. I feel so stupid being this affected by a man who scares me so much and rightfully so. His reputation has been well earned, at least from what I've heard. Can I even believe the rumors? I'm basing everything I know about the guy I'm destined to spend my life with off the mouths of people who berate me for fun. People who have beaten me and abused me for as long as I can remember. All because of my worthless father. I make a note to investigate this further when I have an opportunity. I can't think about it now because I see Andy standing at the same place we've met before school everyday since the beginning of high school. I climb out of Devin's car and he comes and wraps his arm around my waist, possessively. It's not a romantic gesture by the feel of it. It's more like I'm the new toy a toddler just pulled out of the box. 'It's mine, don't touch it.' I try to shrug him away but it's useless, he easily keeps his arm in place and as we near the doors, his hold tightens. He is staring Andy down in such a fashion that Andy backs away from the doors, letting us pass by without a word. My locker is not far from the entrance and Devins is down the next hall. I think he's going to let me go and go to his locker but he doesn't. He lets go so that I can shuffle my book bag around and change out my books for morning classes. After I'm done, he reaches down and takes my hand and begins leading me towards his locker. I am so engrossed in the electric coursing through me that I don't even really notice people stopping in the halls and staring. He doesn't seem to care at all. It's only when he hears something that he even acknowledges anyone. He releases me and grabs a jock named Liam around his throat and slams him against some lockers. My senses are returned to full as he assaults this guy and I am unsure what to do. My subconscious is telling me to intervene but I'm afraid. I am easily a foot and a half smaller than either of these guys. Devin is yelling at him to never say something like that again, the rage in his eye is astounding. I didn't even hear what Liam had said, I was so wrapped in my unchecked feelings for Devin. I drop my bags and step forward and grab Devin's arm. "Devin, stop! Let him go!" Devins hands tighten around Liam's throat, Liam's face is becoming purple. He's about to prove them all right. He is going to strangle him right here. "DEVIN!" I shout "Look at me!" He turns his face towards me and then his eyes soften and he lets him go. Liam drops to the floor holding his neck and choking for air. "I'll deal with you at the packhouse." He says as he grabs me and half pushes me down the hall. He's one of his own wolves. I wonder why he's acted this way. I am confused and embarrassed. Why did he do that? As if sensing the question, Devin says "Noone will disrespect my Luna, especially not one of my own wolves." He grabs his stuff from this locker and he releases me at the classroom door. He looks inside and sees that Andy is seated in his usual seat directly beside my chair and his eyes narrow. The rush of events had given me a moment to forget the s**t storm that has become my life. Devin leans close to me and says "Don't forget what I said. Not a word." And he heads down the hall without another word.
