Lara POV
Last thing I remember from the club is that murky brown–aura guy coming up behind me, too close, too fast — then someone grabbed him and ripped him back like he weighed nothing. I only saw a blur of movement, the two of them talking in the corner, and then… nothing.
But the man who intervened?
God. He was big. Bigger than the campus jocks, bigger than the regular tough guys who usually swagger into the club. He was older too — not old-old, just… grown. Solid. Powerful. The kind of man you don’t bump into without apologizing first.
His aura had hit me like a punch.
Beautiful, intense, but also hardened around the edges, like someone who’s been carrying the world on his shoulders for too long. Sadness pulsed through it too, buried deep under layers of… responsibility? Duty? Pain?
I’d never seen anything like it.
And trust me, I’ve seen a lot of auras.
My phone vibrated, snapping me back to reality. I checked the message strapped on my arm.
Dr V:
Sorry sweetie, need urgent help please. One of the babies isn’t doing too well. I know you’re off, but can you come help?
I didn’t even think.
“Steven, Rox, I need to go. Emergency at the clinic.”
“Now?” Steven pouted. “But we just—”
“Sorry! I’ll see you later!”
I bolted, weaving around people and ignoring the music still pounding through my bones. I didn’t stop until I reached my car. Dr V texting at night meant serious trouble — he never disturbed anyone unless an animal’s life depended on it.
By the time I stormed into the clinic, I was breathless.
“Dr V!”
“In here, Lara,” he called from the back.
The sight waiting for me shattered my heart.
A tiny puppy lay on the table, barely breathing, chest rising shallowly. His aura flickered weakly — fading in and out like a dying candle.
“Oh, baby,” I whispered, sliding closer. “We’re going to help you.”
“I’m sorry for calling you—” Dr V started, looking exhausted.
“Don’t apologize. I’ll always come for them.”
And I meant it. I would sit with this puppy all night if I had to.
His little aura pulsed again.
Good. Stay with me, little guy.
I wasn’t going anywhere.
Lucas POV
I can still smell her.
Even out here in the night air, it clings to me — warm and sweet and something that twists inside my chest, something that feels like home.
I didn’t think. Didn’t plan. Didn’t care how it looked. I simply followed her car as she sped toward town.
Yes, I’m the King of Alphas.
Yes, I’m basically stalking her.
No, I don’t care.
She rushed inside the vet and I followed silently, keeping to the shadows. Wolves wouldn’t hear me unless I let them. Humans didn’t stand a chance.
Inside, I heard her voice — frantic, worried.
Gods, she has the kind of voice my soul could memorize.
“Dr V, Dr V!”
“She works here,” I muttered to Lex. “How did I never know?”
“Because you avoid everyone,” Lex grumbled. “You hide in your big house and growl at anyone who visits.”
I ignore him. Or try to.
“No, no. You don’t have to apologize…” I hear her say, soft and sad.
My Luna.
My mate.
Already carving herself into every part of me.
I take one step toward them — then freeze.
No.
If I walk in there right now, she’ll run. I’ll frighten her. And I can’t — I won’t — risk that.
“See, Lex?” I snapped. “This is why I didn’t want a mate. She’s already consuming every thought I have.”
“MATE,” Lex roared.
He didn’t care about logic. Once wolves scent their mate, nothing else exists.
I sighed, defeated, and walked out.
Fine.
I’ll watch.
I’ll protect.
She won’t even know I’m here.
I sat in the car, waiting, every muscle buzzing.
Lara POV
Over an hour passed.
Lucky — yes, I named him — was still fighting. And I was fighting right with him. I made a tiny bed for myself beside the incubation unit.
“If I name you,” I whispered, “you have to get better. That’s the rule.”
Dr V rubbed his eyes, struggling to stay awake.
“Go home,” I urged. “I’ll stay with him. You’ve been here all day. I’m younger — I can handle one night.”
He hesitated.
“Pepper spray,” I said. “Doors locked. Alarm on. I’ll be fine.”
“You’re the best, Lara,” he sighed. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He left reluctantly.
I settled next to Lucky, placing a gentle hand against the warm glass.
“I’ve got you,” I whispered.
His aura flickered weakly.
Hold on, little one.
Lucas POV
Finally, movement.
Dr V stepped out, locking the doors. But she didn’t follow.
Where is she?
I was out of the car before the doctor even turned the key in the lock.
I appeared in front of him like a shadow.
“Where is she?” I growled.
“My King?” Dr V stammered, startled. “Who are you looking for?”
“The girl,” I snapped, my patience cracking.
“You mean… Lara?”
Lara.
My wolf purred.
My heart stuttered.
“Yes.”
“She’s my assistant?”
I gave him a look that said, Do not test me right now.
“She stayed inside,” he explained quickly. “We have a sick puppy—”
“You left her alone?” My voice dropped, dangerous. “In the middle of the night?”
“No disrespect, my King, but… why—?”
“Because,” I gritted out, “she is my mate.”
He froze.
Then he smiled.
The old man actually smiled at me.
“She isn’t a wolf,” he said softly. “Not a human either. I believe she’s part witch — though she doesn’t know it.”
A witch.
That explained the aura.
The scent.
The pull.
“My King,” Dr V continued, “do you want me to stay with her tonight?”
“No.”
He flinched as my Alpha power rolled over him.
“I will stay.”
“But she won’t trust you,” he warned. “She doesn’t know you.”
“She won’t know I am here,” I said firmly. “But I will keep her safe.”
He nodded — slowly, carefully — then backed away.
I waited until he drove off.
Then I positioned myself in the shadows across from the clinic door.
My mate was inside.
I wasn’t going anywhere.
Not tonight.
Not ever.
She can run…
but she will always be mine.
