Prologue; The Black Wolf

911 Words
I just wanted some peace and quiet, so I went for a midnight trip to the Lake but that was the first time I saw the wolf. A pelt as black as shadow and those eyes that stared back at me - startlingly blue and seemingly glowing. Across a lake and I could see them! I felt them watch me as I left. So much for my peace and quiet and solitude. To think I spent some of my sleep hours just to be able to go.... But for some reason, I wasn't scared. Maybe it was the distance.       "Milly. I'm telling you I saw. A giant black wolf across Ens Lake."      "Aphrodite. I'm telling you that a dog got out. And being someone's dog you, a someone across the water were a welcome sighting for one little lost pooch." Milly was looking at me with her big brown eyes. Her hair was flaming red, it was a perfect fit for her sass and her spunk. She turned heads if not for how beautiful she was it was the presence she had in any room. She always got the best tips. She helps bring me down a few pegs often when I get too far ahead of myself!     "It was not a dog. It was too intelligent. Too.. observant. It was WATCHING ME."     "How often does a deer watch you? How often does your mum's dog watch you?"     "Often," I responded flatly. "But you don't feel the deer on your back still watching..."     "Exactly. It isn't exactly weird for animals to see you and stare. They're not like little kids you can tell that it's rude to stare." She disregarded the rest of my comment.      "Or that they should take a picture because it will last longer," I grumbled, still convinced it was a wolf.     "Ladies! Your tables!"Our head manager at the time flitted in, glaring at us for spending time on the clock chatting. Even though we still had 5 minutes to our break this was supposed to be our time to have a final rest before the dinner rush came in     "Lexie. We've got 5 minutes so give us a break." She didn't respond she just glowered at the two of us and hurried off to go bother some other worker. Maybe one who wasn't on their break. I felt Milly staring at me suddenly and then she was speaking in a quiet tone.     "Have you heard about who came to town?"     "Uh. No. We're by the city. We always have random words about people being in town."     "Apparently some big-shot CEO. Runs some giant company, has people all over the world."     "That sounds like another Tuesday." I sighed, power and fame and recognition really didn't interest me. Not like they did Milly. She was so beautiful she could model and for all of her spunk, she was one of the most beautiful souls I knew. She could do so many other things than work here in a, though nice, somehow still dinky little restaurant just away from the city. Besides she couldn't even say what exactly the company was. Just like that. Our break was over and we were right on time to deal with the dinnertime swarm.     She needed to be mine.     I am Prince Damien Shayde. The first son born of the King, My father, Blake Shayde. And whoever that was across the lake. Was my Mate. A human, unable to feel the pull of the mate from that distance. If she was any closer she might have even willingly run off with me right then and there. But her human nose couldn't detect me - her eyes likely thought they could see I was a canine, large. They would probably think nothing of it. Perhaps even think I was a lost dog. She could never know I was a royal shifter. Gifted with an exceptional animal forme, power, money, control of vast lands in the other world. With a special taste for human pleasures. I loved frequenting human restaurants,  watching their movies especially their horrors, hiding my power. They always seemed to know some big powerful person was in town and yet they could never say much more and they never knew it was me when I was anywhere. That was a treat I gave myself we had contacts in the human world who would spread the word and I could drink in the words of the people...     But absolutely none of that mattered now. All I wanted was her. In the moonlight she was beautiful - in the moonlight, I wanted to take her home immediately. But I am royalty, I am controlled, and cunning. I must find a way to bring her to my world without a fight. I want her to want me in her human way too. She has no idea the power of mates.. but humans are strong creatures in their own way. Weak, strong. Peculiar beasts of their world.      I could see, with my superior wolf eyes her forme - she was stunning. Her waist was small, her bust was ample, she had soft curves to her hips and her red-brown hair fell in waves around her face. Effortlessly stunning, like the Moon Goddess herself, delicately crafted her features with her own paws over a million of my species lifetimes over. Yet she seemed also so very small and so far away and so very tempting. I needed her.
