I waved my finger to single him to give me a minute. I already almost missed Madilyn's call. I wasn't going to rush her off the phone. I don't want to lie to her and I also don't want to tell her what we were doing, because if she knew, she would get on a plane and come straight back, and I don't want her to do that. In Washington, she's safe and that is all I care about.
When she hung up, I had to take a deep breath, but it didn't help because breathing without her hurts. For a moment, I questioned everything. If I did what I was about to do, how would she react? Would I lose her?
