Chapter 8 Warmth, And A Sense Of Security

1008 Words
As I shrieked in terror, I could feel my body being lifted into the air.   It was the wolf! I was being carried in its mouth like a puppy, and it was heading away from the castle!   My body, which was rendered immobile as it was locked between the wolf’s teeth, was trembling with fear.   The wolf was fast despite its size. I could feel the wind wheezing past my ears as it sprinted through the forest. Heck, I could barely keep my eyes open.   Wait a second… It did not kill me, and is instead carrying me away. Is it trying to feed me to its pups?   Oh God, I am so dead.   But just when all hopes seemed lost, the wolf abruptly stopped.   I forced my eyes open despite the nausea of being rocked up and down by the wolf’s movements. What’s going on?   Our path was blocked by twenty wolves with black fur.   The newcomers were half the size of the silvery wolf, and were all covered by black fur. The newcomers looked just like hellhounds that came straight from hell.   Are they… The wolf’s pups?   I was shaking in fear down to my very soul at the thought of being torn apart by the wolves.   But the silvery wolf started backing away slowly.   While the pack of black wolves bared their fangs and pressed forward. They were poised to strike.   Realization hit me like a truck. Oh no, these are not his friends!   What’s going on?!   I was confused.   The events that happened tonight were so bizarre that I was even beginning to think that it was all a dream.   Even the shittiest reality show on Earth will not have such a shitty plot!   The pack of black wolves surrounded the silvery wolf. They split off into small groups of threes and fives and began attacking the larger wolf from different directions.   They were aiming to triumph over their lone opponent through attrition.   The silvery wolf’s strength was apparent. It was able to kill and badly injure a black wolf with each swipe of its paw. But there were simply too many of them.   And slowly but surely, the silvery wolf was brought to the brink of defeat. Large gaping wounds covered the entirety of its body. Almost all of its silvery fur had already been dyed red.   I could feel its strength slowly waning. Its movements were growing sluggish. Even its body was starting to tremble due to fatigue.   But the wolf refused to give up. It remained tenacious in its fight against the black wolves.   While I was miraculously kept out of harm’s way!   Wait a minute… The black wolves seemed to be after me! The silvery wolf would take damage from the black wolves just to keep me out of their reach.   If it let go of me, it would be able to use its fangs to fight. And it would most definitely win! But it did not let go of me! Not even once!   Is it… Trying to protect me?! Bang!   The sound of gunshot rang out in the dark.   And the head of a black wolf that was lunging at the silvery wolf exploded into a mist of blood.   Bang! Bang! Bang!   Each gunshot marked the death of yet another black wolf.   Seizing the opportunity, the silvery wolf broke through the encirclement, but its strength was waning. It was growing weaker and weaker.   The wolf ran and ran, until it finally stopped deep in the forest.   It set me onto the ground before falling over with a loud thud.    The wolf’s fur was dyed red with blood. Every inch of its body was covered by wounds. As it laid on the ground, I knew that it could no longer move.   While the wolf was no longer a threat to me, I was not happy at all. I could still remember how it fought. Were you… Trying to protect me?   Tears dripped from my eyes as I stared at its many wounds.   I knelt beside it, and caressed its large head.   A hint of stubbornness flashed in the wolf’s eyes as it turned its head away. It was as if the wolf was refusing my sympathy.   It then closed its eyes.   “Hey! Don’t die!” I choked out a sentence. I crawled towards the wolf and placed my hand where its heart was.   It felt warm. But more importantly, I could sense a faint heartbeat in its chance.   Thank God…   The gunshots, and the howling of wolves had all long since faded away. Silence once again settled over the dark of night.   I studied my surroundings in a daze. Even with the faint illumination of the moonlight, the only thing I could see was trees and nothing but darkness.   I pulled my phone out of my purse to look at the time. It was 2:47 am.   It was apparent that I had no idea where I was. I was lost. There was no way I could return to the castle.   But judging from the speed of the silvery wolf, I could tell that I was a distance away from the castle.   What should I do next?   I did not dare to move from my spot out of fear that I would run into more black wolves.   And after much hesitation, I finally reached a bold decision.   I decided to stay by the silvery wolf’s side!   With the injuries it sustained, there was no way it could harm me.   And in the cold night air, it was a source of warmth. Its sheer presence would also do well to ward off other beats.   Hmm… I guess I can stay here until it gets brighter.   I was still clutching the dining knife tightly as I snuggled closer to the wolf. It felt so warm… And so safe…   Why did the wolf protect me?   Who was shooting at the black wolves?   Have the people in the castle noticed my disappearance?   I eventually drifted into sleep despite the many questions in my mind...
