9 First DayAt dawn the four men walked out of the stockade gate of Glevum, nodding backwards as they went, half as a sign of acknowledgment to the sentry’s salute, half as a goodbye wish to Nodens, the god who overlooked that particular terrain alongside the river Sabrina. They were dressed like peasants, or woodmen, in short leather tunics and thick frieze breeches, caught in by a thong at the ankle. On their feet they wore light deerskin brogues, and on their backs, rolled like a long sausage, a heavy plaid in nondescript tartan.
