It’s two days after Eve’s birthday as her birthday fell on a wednesday this year. Her parents threw her a birthday party already but Lexie and Kai wanted to do something even more special for her. They basically spent most of their life together anyway. “Kai,” Lexie’s final text starts. “I want to tell Eve I like her during this party of ours. It’s time I do something about these feelings for Eve.” Kai’s reply made her smile. “You get your girl, Lexie. I’m all for you two being together. It’s about time you two start dating.”
It’s now after school and the girls have a bag with a change of clothes ready for tonight. Not knowing how to ask this, halfway to the hotel, Eve just asks the question she’s been wanting so badly to know this past month. “Lexie,” Eve starts, hesitating a bit. Lexie hums in response, looking at Eve with a side eye so her face is still looking at the road. “Is there something going on between you and Kai?”
Eve’s chest feels tight at her own question as she stares at Lexie, gauging her reaction and response to the question. “No, there isn’t anything between us.” A simple answer which should have sated Eve’s curiosity but it didn’t. She was still suspicious. “I don’t believe you. You guys are dating, right? It’s okay if you are. There’s no reason to hide your relationship with him from me. Just tell me the truth, Lexie.” Eve says, almost beggingly, her chest feeling tighter with each word, hoping she was wrong. Lexie has never once kept something from her, so why now? Why would she keep her relationship with Kai a secret?
“Eve, there’s nothing going on between Kai and I. We’re not dating. You know I wouldn’t lie to you, right?” As Lexie slows down and stops at a stop sign, she looks at Eve. Her expression was something she never saw on Eve’s face before. The expression Eve is making just made Lexie want to do something she knows she shouldn’t. Not yet anyway. “Lexie, stop lying to me!” Eve begins to scream, getting frustrated with the lies. “I know you two are dating, why are you lying to me?! Just tell me the truth! You never once lied to me, why now?”
Surprised, Lexie becomes quiet for a while. Why is she yelling at her? Why would it matter to Eve if she was dating Kai or not? A million questions swarmed Lexie’s mind as she was getting closer to the hotel. Eve mumbles something and it sets Lexie off. “Eve,” Lexie begins, trying to reign in her anger but fails. “I’m not dating Kai. I don’t even like him like that.” It was simple and it should have solved the problem but it didn’t. Eve kept Screaming accusations and repeating herself.
“Evelyn!” Lexie screams, stopping Eve from talking anymore. “I don’t like Kai! We’re just friends! Stop this. I don’t like him. I-” Lexie begins but stops but her anger gets the better of her. “Eve, I don’t like Kai. I like you, Eve! I like you and I wanted to tell you when we got to the hotel.” This shut Eve up. She didn’t know how to respond. She just realised her own feelings towards Lexie and now she’s confessing to her? Though it was forced out of her, she still confessed.
A lot of thoughts flew around in Eve’s mind. When did Lexie start liking her? How long has it been? Why didn’t she just say this from the beginning? So many questions and she didn’t know the answers to. Eve didn’t want those questions of hers to be answered though. She was afraid of the answers to those questions. How did Lexie even realise she had feelings for her? That was the question Eve was the most afraid of knowing. The how.
The rest of the drive to the hotel was quiet. Both of the girls were deep in thought. It wasn’t long till Lexie pulled into the hotel’s driveway and parks. As Eve was getting out and her stuff out of the car, Lexie reverses as soon as the door is closed and drives away. Eve was standing in the parking space Lexie pulled into as Kai went out of the hotel room. “What happened, Eve? Where did Lexie go?”
Cautiously, Kai approached Eve as he very obviously saw something was wrong. Eve’s reply was just a mumble but audible that Kai heard what she said. “We had a fight. I was so certain too. Lexie likes me.” It was only in bits but he understood what happened. Eve and Lexie fought over something and Lexie ended up confessing.
“Hey,” Kai begins, being careful as he just now noticed the tears streaming down her face. “Let’s get inside and figure this out, okay?” He wraps an arm around Eve and guides her into the hotel room. Kai holds Eve as she cries on his shoulder, mumbling over and over that she messed up.
Kai knew Eve didn’t mess up. The plan wasn’t set in stone and Lexie could have backed out and not confessed her feelings for Eve in the end. We wouldn’t know now though since Lexie left right after Eve got out of the car.
“It’s been a few hours, Kai.” Eve states, just now noticing the time. “You’re right, something isn’t right.” Getting his phone, Kai texts Lexie. After a few moments of no response, he starts to call her phone. Still no answer.
As soon as Lexie leaves, she turns her phone off. As there’s no one around, Lexie is going well over eighty miles an hour on a sixty miles an hour road. As she’s driving, she’s screaming and hitting the steering wheel, trying to get her anger out before she turns around and enjoys the party that was meant to be a good night.
As Lexie was hitting the steering wheel, a deer pops out of nowhere. She immediately swerves and hits a tree, going through the metal railing that’s on both sides of the road. The impact made Lexie pass out, still strapped in her seat with the airbag being deployed while she’s leaning against it. Glass is scattered all over; the dash, the passenger seat and some even went into her face.
With her phone being turned off, no one knowing where she is and no traffic, Lexie lies there, covered in glass with major injuries. Her thoughts right before she passes out is saying she loves Eve.
