Chapter 6

1150 Words
“Kai, We should look for Lexie.” Sniffling and finally calming down, Eve has had enough of waiting for Lexie to come back. At this point, both Eve and Kai have tried calling her and no reply. At some point, they both got sent straight to voicemail, a common thing that happens when the phone is turned off. “I know you’re worried, so am I. But she’ll be back. She’ll never miss.” Even Kai wasn’t convinced by his own words. He kept repeating himself as he seemed so sure but at the same time, not sure of his own words. “Kai,” Eve starts, making him stop pacing the hotel room. “Yea, Eve?” He just looked at her and saw the expression she was making. It was the same expression every time Lexie was around Eve. It was full of love and he just knew what was going to be said. “I like Lexie, Kai. I like her and I don’t want to lose her. Please, can we please look for her?” With a heavy sigh, he grabs his keys. “Fine, but you stay here just in case she comes back while I’m out looking for her, okay?” She wanted to argue and come with but she just agreed. Knowing arguing with Kai won’t get them anywhere. “Fine, but please tell me when you find her.” With a nod, Kai leaves and gets into his car, driving off onto the highway. It wasn’t even half an hour until he finds skid marks made by another car and a stunned deer, just standing right in the middle of the highway. With a honk, the deer scurried off but something made him stop and pull over to the side. As he was doing so, he saw another car. It wasn’t just any car though, he found Lexie’s car. Running to the driver's side, he started calling for an ambulance. “Lexie!” He began screaming, wanting her to wake up. “Come on, wake up, Lexie.” After explaining the situation to the operator, they dispatched an ambulance to the location. Sitting by the door, Kai calls Eve and she answers right away. “I found Lexie but it isn’t good.” He heard the sharp intake of breath from her end. She’s in shock. Even he is in shock. He explains that he found her car because of a deer in the middle of the road and assumes the deer caused the wreck. Eve begins to breathe heavily, having a panic attack. “How badly is she hurt? Is she awake?” The silence from Kai’s end is all she needed as a response. “I’ll get you as soon as the ambulance gets here. It’s not far from the hotel.” With a silent agreement, Kai hangs up while seeing the lights of the ambulance flashing from a distance. Back at the hotel, Eve begins to pace back and forth in the room. A million thoughts rushed around in her head and none of them were good. How bad was the accident? Is she alive? With the last thought she paused and shook her head. Of course she was alive. She couldn’t die just yet. There’s a ton of things they promised to do together before they grew old and became too busy with their own lives. Sitting on the floor in the corner, hidden by the bed, her thoughts started racing again. After a while, Kai calls and tells Eve he’s on the way to pick her up. Gathering herself together, Eve heads outside and waits for Kai to get there. The thoughts roaming in her head haven't stopped. As Kai and Eve were driving to the hospital, with Eve waiting just a couple minutes outside, it was quiet. They didn’t have much to talk about normally, Kai was Lexie’s friend after all. During the ride, Mrs. Sanchez calls Eve, her daughter. “Hey sweetie, how’s the party?” With a choked sob, she knew something was wrong with her daughter. “What’s wrong, honey?” Worry laced her voice, worried something happened to Eve. “Mom, Lexie is in the hospital.” At her own words, Eve breaks down and sobs into the phone, waiting for her mothers reply. She was hoping her own mother would console her but she didn’t, it was pure silence on the other end of the phone. “Mom?” Without even responding, she hung up on her daughter. Now Eve was confused. Why did her mom hang up on her? Could she be on her way to the hospital? What was going on with her own mother? She needed someone to console her and she just hung up. This made Eve cry even harder. She couldn’t deal with the thought of her friend, the one who she fell in love with, is hurt and in the hospital. Going backwards to about an hour ago, Kai is talking to the paramedic at the scene of the crash. He’s explaining that she and another friend of theirs had a fight and she went to drive just to clear her head. He also explained seeing the deer and guessing the deer was the cause of the crash. Putting Lexie on a stretcher and in the ambulance, the emergency vehicle speeds down the highway and to the hospital. Getting a white rag from his car, it puts it in her car, making it stick out of the driver’s side door since the window isn’t an option. After making sure the rag is secure, Kai gets into his car and heads to the hotel to get Eve. He calls Eve to let her know he’s on his way to get her. Pulling into the parking lot, Kai sees Eve standing outside, waiting for him. The drive was quiet, both of them worried about Lexie. Not knowing what’s going to happen. On the way to the hospital, Their silence is interrupted by the sound of Eve’s phone ringing. It was Mrs. Collins, Lexie’s mother. answering, Mrs. Collins immediately speaks, not letting Eve speak. “What happened to my baby? Why is Lexie in the hospital? Which hospital is it?” She pauses which Eve took as an opportunity to speak, answering her questions. “Lexie and I had a fight. She was angry and took a drive to cool off. I don’t know anything beyond that, it was Kai who found Lexie. It’s the hospital close to the highway going to the hotel we were staying at, I’m sure you know which one, right?” Silence ensued on the other end. A small hum, keys jingling and then silence. Eve looked at her phone and saw she hung up. All the adults seem to be hanging up without a word right now. It’s making Eve anxious.
