Lexie stirs in her bed, turning over to see the digital clock on her bedside table. She immediately shoots up and stumbles around and gets changed into a new uniform as she fell asleep in the one from the previous day. She shoves an extra pair of clothes in her bag as she doesn’t plan on going to school but pretends she is. Lexie grabs her phone, clicking the power button only to find out it was dead. That was the moment she realised she didn’t put her phone on the charger when she got home.
She rushed out of the door, not bothering to speak to her parents as she wanted the illusion of rushing out of the door to school. Thankfully, Lexie had a charger cord in her car so she could charge it. It was currently eight fifteen in the morning, she has missed almost three classes so far so she decided to skip and go to the mall for the next couple hours. As Lexie drives to the mall with her previously dead phone on the charger, she notices Eve has called and texted her several times.
The texts from Eve were mainly asking Lexie if she was coming to school, where she was, what happened and just wondering where she was. Eve was concerned for her best friend when she realised Lexie wasn’t at school. Normally, she didn't skip school, she was always on time. Towards the end of class, Eve received a text from Lexie, it was simple but put her mind at ease. The text simply read, “Hey, good morning Eve. I overslept as my phone was dead, i’m not going to school today and just going to hang out at the mall. Try not to miss me too much by yourself! Sorry I missed your calls. Mom and I got into a fight because of Mrs. Jones and what she pulled with me.”
Eve didn’t respond to the text message, she just smiled and locked her phone. Lexie pulls into the mall parking lot, driving down a few rows till she finally finds a parking space. She puts up some sheets around the windows of the car, even the windshield and the back window and changes into black leggings, a long sleeve shirt and a faux fur lined jacket since it’s cold outside. Lexie takes the sheets down and lazily bundles them together, putting them in her back seat while exiting her car and walking toward the mall, entering the building.
Lexie notices the day and time and realises Kai works today. Now on a mission, she makes a beeline towards the store he works at. Now at the entrance to the store, Kai’s back is turned as Lexie sneaks up behind him. “Boo!” She exclaims, making Kai jump and spin around fast. “What the hell Lexie, almost gave me a heart attack.” He lets out a dramatic sigh as he wraps his arms around his best friend. “How have you been, girly? It’s been too long.” Lexie just lets out a small laugh, shaking her head as she’s the first one to break the hug. “Kai, it’s only been a couple days. It hasn’t even been a full week.”
Stepping back, Kai feigned being sad, “Working makes it seem longer though.” He pouts as he Notices the time, “Wait, aren’t you supposed to be in school? Why are you here?” Kai’s stare gets the better of Lexie, it always has been. For the next couple minutes, she explained what happened. Lexie started with Mrs. Jones from the previous day to the argument with her mom and to today, her phone being dead when she woke up so she didn’t wake up in time to get to school on time.
“Well, fighting with your mom isn’t new, you two always fight. I remember a couple years ago, she taught at my school and she gave my buddy and I a hard time too. I think she has a thing against children. Don’t know why she teaches if she doesn’t like kids that much.” Lexie agreed. Feeling better about what happened to her in just two days. It has been eventful and stressing her out.
They continue talking as Lexie suddenly ducks down, hiding from the entrance of the store. “Don’t look and make it obvious, I just saw my mom here. I gotta go, Kai.” Lexie began, looking up as Kai looked upset. He began to do the very thing she told him not to; to make it obvious. He always did the very thing she tells him not to do in situations like this. It annoys her but she gets over it easily. He looks down at her and nods, pretending to be busy with something else. “It’s safe, run while you can and go to your car. Go somewhere else, there’s still a couple more hours till school lets out.” Without a word, only silent agreement between the two, she pats his leg since she can’t hug him goodbye and runs out of the store, laying low.
Dodging her mom wasn’t easy. She weaved through stores and pretended to be interested in children's toys that can be played with in the corridor of the mall. Lexie decided to just exit through an entrance that’s in a*****e so she started searching for the nearest exit in a*****e that’s close to her car and made a dash for it. As soon as she got outside, she ran to her car and got in, getting out of the parking lot quickly as she struggled to get her seatbelt on.
Lexie drove around a bit, stopping at a random fast food place for lunch. She was confused on why her mom was at the mall when she’s normally at work but she didn’t put a second thought to it. She was probably shopping and didn’t want her own husband to know she’s spending money. Mrs. Collins had a horrible habit of spending money that she shouldn’t be spending. She’s always been like that and Lexie constantly wonders why her father married her mother.
Lexie spent the rest of the time at a park, walking around and lazily swinging on the swingset as children are at school anyway so it’s empty. As soon as Lexie got home, her mom started to ask her questions. The school called her again, this time saying she wasn’t in school at all today. Ignoring her mom, knowing arguing this time won’t get anyone anywhere, she went straight to her room. Lexie noticed a text from Eve, it was just what she missed and the work she’d have to make up. Even though her text was school related it put a smile on her face, just hearing from Eve made Lexie happy.
After replying to the text, Lexie got into her pajamas and curled up in her bed as she made sure her phone was on the charger this time. Eve made her happy, she knows it’s love. Lexie knows she loves Eve. There was one problem; Lexie didn’t know if Eve felt the same way or if she even likes girls. As her thoughts wander towards Eve and how she’s going to tell her, Lexie begins to fall asleep with a smile on her face just from the thoughts she’s having.
It’s been a month since everything went down; Mrs. Jones giving Lexie detention, Mrs. Collins and Lexie fighting, Lexie realising she’s in love with her best friend, Eve and other eventful days. In the past month, Lexie’s feelings for Eve grew even more but she has a plan. Before her birthday, Lexie wants to ask Eve out, no matter what happens between them.
It’s currently a Friday night and the two girls are having a sleepover at Eve’s house. Mrs. Sanchez and Mr. Sanchez, Eve’s parents, have left for the weekend to see family, leaving Eve at home. Every so often, they’d have sleepovers. Last time it was over Lexie’s house and this time at Eve’s as they alternate between houses so it’s not always at one person's house all the time.
Currently, the two girls are snuggled up on the couch, watching a movie and eating popcorn. They’re covered in a blanket as it’s cold outside and it seeped into the house a bit. They’ve been binge watching movies all night and occasionally getting up to get more snacks to eat. In the middle of the movie, Eve pauses it and looks at Lexie with a huge Cheshire cat smile. “Uh-oh. What are you thinking now, Eve?” Lexie asked, knowing Eve is plotting something. “Cake. Let’s make cake.” Eve quickly gets up as she runs off into the kitchen.
“Wait up, Eve!” Lexie yells after Eve, as she gets tangled in the blanket she was using as she stumbles around, kicking her legs to untangle the blanket from around them. Now standing in the doorway of the kitchen, Lexie is watching Eve run around grabbing the flour, eggs, baking powder and other ingredients to make a cake. Now walking into the kitchen, Lexie grabs a big enough mixing bowl for everything to go into. “So why do you suddenly want to make a cake?” She asked Eve, smiling at her sudden impulsive nature. Eve didn’t bother to answer as she mixes everything in a stand mixer. As if she forgot the main rule of using a machine such as a stand mixer, she turns the speed to the high setting, making the flour go everywhere.
Screaming in shock, the girls duck down in hopes to not get covered by flour but they fail. Looking at each other, they both laugh at each other as flour covers their face and clothes. Eve reaches on top of the counter, grabbing a handful of flour and blows it right in Lexie’s face. Gasping in surprise, in retaliation, Lexie grabs a handful of flour and blows it in Eve’s face.
Laughter can be heard from the kitchen as Eve started a flour war. Flour is flying all around the kitchen and Lexie dodges an attack from Eve and Eve does the same with Lexie’s attacks. The making of cake is totally forgotten as flour covers all surfaces. Lexie fills a small bag full of flour and throws it at Eve, yelling out “Flour bomb!”
Now tired and covered in flour after Eve returns the flour bomb towards Lexie, they’re both laying on the kitchen floor which is also covered in flour, panting a bit. They look at each other and just burst out into uncontrollable laughter. Both girls are covered in flour from head to toe. “We’re gonna have to change and shower this flour off at some point.” Eve says, Lexie just nodding in agreement.
Lexie looks over Eve’s face, noticing the flour on her nose and then on her lips. Her lips look more inviting than they normally would to Lexie as she gets the urge to kiss them, wanting to mix the flour on her own lips with hers. After a couple of minutes of staring at Eve’s face, Lexie shoots right up and starts heading towards the bathroom to shower. If she stayed any longer, she wouldn’t have been able to resist the urge to kiss Eve. She had to get away before she ruined everything. Lexie only had one more month until Eve’s birthday, she needs to start planning more.
