The Lion's Gate

710 Words
The first rays of dawn broke through the storm clouds as a black SUV sped along the winding roads outside Palermo. Inside, Don Vincenzo Russo sat silently in the front passenger seat, the ancient map resting on his lap. Angelo studied the faded symbols, while Pietro typed rapidly on his laptop. Rocco kept watch through the window, and Nico drove with unwavering focus. Their destination was the Cathedral of San Leone, an ancient church built more than six hundred years earlier. Two massive stone lions stood at its entrance, matching the clue hidden on the map: “Where the stone lions watch forever, the first truth sleeps beneath their feet.” After two hours, the cathedral came into view. It stood alone on a hill overlooking the sea. Time had worn away much of its beauty, but the towering lion statues remained, staring across the valley as though guarding a secret. “Looks like we’re the first ones here,” Nico said as he parked the SUV. “I wouldn’t count on that,” Vincenzo replied. The five men stepped out. The air was cool, and the old church was eerily quiet. Angelo examined the statues carefully. “The clue says the truth sleeps beneath their feet.” Rocco shrugged. “So we move them.” He pushed against one of the stone lions with all his strength. It didn’t budge. “There has to be another way,” Angelo said. Pietro noticed strange markings on the base of each lion. “These symbols match the ones on the map.” He brushed away years of dirt, revealing four small circular slots. “The bronze key!” Angelo exclaimed. Vincenzo removed the lion-shaped key Professor Belli had given them before his death and inserted it into the center slot. A loud click echoed through the courtyard. The ground trembled. Slowly, the two stone lions slid apart, revealing a spiral staircase descending into darkness. Rocco smiled. “Now we’re getting somewhere.” The team switched on their flashlights and descended. The air grew colder with every step. The staircase ended in an underground chamber lined with ancient carvings. At its center stood a stone pedestal holding a golden compass unlike any they had ever seen. Angelo approached cautiously. “This isn’t ordinary.” He noticed Latin words carved into the pedestal. “Only those who seek wisdom over wealth may proceed.” Before anyone could react, the chamber doors slammed shut. Metal spikes shot from the walls. “Trap!” Nico shouted. Pietro searched frantically for a control mechanism. Rocco held back a falling stone slab while Angelo examined the pedestal. “The compass!” Angelo cried. “It’s the key!” He lifted the compass. Instantly, the spikes stopped moving. The chamber fell silent. Everyone exhaled in relief. As Vincenzo inspected the compass, he noticed an inscription engraved on its back. “The second key lies where the king lost his crown.” Before Angelo could interpret the clue, Pietro’s phone buzzed. His face turned pale. “We’ve got company.” Security drones outside the cathedral showed several black SUVs climbing the hill. “The De Luca family,” Vincenzo said. Within moments, gunfire erupted outside. Bullets shattered the cathedral’s stained-glass windows. “We have to move!” Rocco shouted. The team rushed through a narrow tunnel leading away from the chamber. Behind them, explosions echoed as the De Luca soldiers entered the cathedral. After several minutes of running, they emerged through a hidden exit in the forest behind the hill. From the trees, they watched armed men flood the church. Standing among them was a tall man wearing a dark coat. His scarred face was unmistakable. Don Alessandro De Luca. He looked toward the forest and smiled. “It seems we’re always one step behind,” Nico whispered. Vincenzo tightened his grip on the golden compass. “No.” He looked at the compass, then back at the cathedral. “We’re exactly where we need to be.” As the sun rose over the hills of Sicily, both mafia families realized the hunt had truly begun. Neither side intended to lose. And the next clue would lead them to the place where a forgotten king had lost his crown.
