CHAPTER 4
Damien's POV
We got to the address— a club neon was on the sign out front. We walked in. Normal club—- girls, men, drugs, music, drinks, dim lights. Doesn't seem like a place for auction— too much crowd. A good disguise.
We walked past to the kitchen where a big guy stretches his hands—- I looked at Enzo—- we knew what that means —- Enzo came from behind me handing him a bundle of cash. Mail says payment = nothing traceable = cash. I bought that in excess.
We went through the kitchen with Enzo behind me. We finally got to a warehouse kind of place.
Reeks of Rust and diesel. Could tell they tried to make the place better but it didn't work. I walked in and all stares fell to the floor. Surprised. I'm sure they were. Few were there who knew me.
I took my sit. Front row. Enzo standing behind.
The auctioneer– wasn't a man. I couldn't tell. Was speaking behind curtains. Voice distorted.
I could hear faint wailing from behind the curtains.
Auction beings.
They were lined up in rows of 10 male and female altogether. A shirt with a number. Rough looking. You could bearly see their face.
The first round starts.
A male was first. A million bought. Hits. Sold.
A female second. I took a look. She was shaking— maybe too much–not a good fit.
She too. Sold. They were more females than males. No female stood out enough to me. Some where too fragile. Not fit for my world. They won't cope. Another came. Too much bruises.
I don't know what I'm looking for but she's not it.
Less than an hour the first row was gone. All sold.
The men and women there were desperate — maybe too desperate. I could smell it. For some this was a game.
The second row biding started off. A female. Bids start at 1 million. I raised 2 fingers. They had bid paddles. Cheap plastic with numbers. I didn't take one. When Damien Voss bids he doesn't need a number. My face is the number.
2 million. 3 million. Bids were coming in I was about to raise my hands for 4 million when she raised her face. A scar. On her right cheek. My hand came down almost immediately my eyes saw the scar. I can't have a disfigured bride. No way. Sold. 3 million. The fat man who bought her shouted “you'll keep my bed warm at night” and laughs stupidly.
Another female. Sold. Others followed, sold. Sold. Sold. I kept hearing the word and still haven't bought a wife.
Enzo whispered to my ears “none to your liking”. I didn't bother to say a word to him.
Another row gone. All sold. And I had yet to secure a bride. First row. Gone.
Second row. Gone
Third row. Also gone. And I was done also.
This wasn't the place. I thought to myself.
I stood up ready to leave but heard the auctioneer say “high quality”.
For this row the bid was higher 2.5million. I sat back down. An ankle to my knee. Watching. examining rather. This row were not so rough looking. My eyes kept moving.
A girl. Last on the row. Caught my eyes, she looked completely out of place there, too calm. Too clean. Different she was. I watch her. Auction was going on, front of so many people, she reached for her pockets brought out something I didn't see but I guess it was a band. Tied her hair up in a ponytail right there, an expression on her face I couldn't read.
Pretty she was, with her hair up you could see clearly. That's my bride. I said to myself.
Bids were still going on for the second or third person. I don't know. I didn't even care to know. I raised my hand. “4million sir” the auctioneer said. “No 5million I want her” pointing towards the girl. Who didn't spare me a glance.
“ you'll have to wait till her turn sir” said the auction “ 6 million” was my reply. “7 million, 8 million” I said. “Sold” the auctioneer said. Murmurings filled the room. “No. 69” the auctioneer called out to her “you've been sold 8 million”. She finally glanced my way.
I turned to Enzo “let's go” I said. Enzo went to her, took her by the hand, dropping a suitcase of money on the stage.
She didn't say a word, just followed silently behind. We got to the car, she got in the back with me still keeping silent to a point I questioned myself if I was too hasty and bought a mute.
She sat back comfortablely — too comfortablely. Eyes closed. We got to the mansion her eyes still closed. I tabbed her, she opened her eyes came down and followed behind a little too close.
Still not saying a word. Take her to a guest room I said to mali the chief maid.
“What now” I finally heard her say “what role do I play in this mansion of yours”.
“For a second there I thought you were mute and thinking of returning you” I said to her “that would have been a waste of 8million” “go rest we'll talk tomorrow” I walked away Enzo following behind.
I got to my room with Enzo “ So D what's the thing about her that caught your attention” he ask.
“She tied her hair” I said. in that situation a girl tieing her hair felt weird and new to me. “What” Enzo said I gave him a stare that says not to ask more
“I'll talk to her about the contract tomorrow” I said to Enzo. He got the message and left the room.
I was shirtless now. Lying on my bed with just briefs and the scene of her tieing her hair in a pony plays in my head over and over again in slow motion.
I fell asleep just like that, replaying it over and over again.
