He was the best his little Tennessee hometown ever saw, but by the time he got to Triple A, he knew there was little chance he would ever make the majors. Coaches loved his clean, effective swing, but he was only a competent fielder, and he lacked the power that would justify sticking him in right field. It didn’t bother him much. Baseball was something to enjoy while he could, a fun way to make a little money while he took classes for the accounting degree that was his real future.
